Item type:Item, Decentralized Synchronization of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With a Reputation Algorithm(2018-03-01) ;Klotz, Justin R. ;Parikh, Anup ;Cheng, Teng-Hu ;Dixon, Warren E.機械工程學系Decentralized synchronization approaches generally assume that communication of state information between neigh-boring agents is completely accurate. However, just one agent's communication of inaccurate information to neighbors can significantly degrade the performance of the entire network. To help abate this problem, we present a decentralized controller for a leader-follower framework which uses local information to vet neighbors and change consensus weights accordingly. Because updates of the consensus weights produce a switched system, switching control theory techniques are used to develop a dwell-time that must elapse between agents' successive weight updates. A Lyapunov-based stability analysis is presented which develops sufficient conditions for approximate convergence of follower agents' states to a leader agent's time-varying state. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the developed techniques.Item type:Item, An Efficient Tree Search Algorithm for the Free Distance of Variable-Length Error-Correcting Codes(2018-03-01) ;Huang, Chun ;Wu, Ting-Yi ;Chen, Po-Ning ;Alajaji, FadyHan, Yunghsiang S.We propose an efficient tree search algorithm for determining the free distance of variable-length error-correcting codes (VLECs). A main idea behind the algorithm is to structure all pairs of code word-concatenated sequences as a tree, in which we seek the pair of sequences that determine the free distance. In order to speed up the algorithm, we establish constraints that do not compromise optimality in determining the free distance. Experimental results on VLECs algorithmically constructed for the English alphabet show that our algorithm requires a considerably smaller number of bitwise distance computations and covers a much smaller number of tree nodes than Dijkstra's algorithm operating over the pairwise distance graph while being a hundred times faster in terms of execution time. Item type:Item, Efficient and Adaptive Error Recovery in a Micro-Electrode-Dot-Array Digital Microfluidic Biochip(2018-03-01) ;Li, Zipeng ;Lai, Kelvin Yi-Tse ;McCrone, John ;Yu, Po-HsienChakrabarty, KrishnenduA digital microfluidic biochip (DMFB) is an attractive technology platform for automating laboratory procedures in biochemistry. In recent years, DMFBs based on a microelectrode- dot-array (MEDA) architecture have been proposed. MEDA biochips can provide advantages of better capability of droplet manipulation and real-time sensing ability. However, errors are likely to occur due to defects, chip degradation, and the lack of precision inherent in biochemical experiments. Therefore, an efficient error-recovery strategy is essential to ensure the correctness of assays executed on MEDA biochips. By exploiting MEDA-specific advances in droplet sensing, we present a novel error-recovery technique to dynamically reconfigure the biochip using real-time data provided by on-chip sensors. Local recovery strategies based on probabilistic-timed-automata are presented for various types of errors. An online synthesis technique and a control flow are also proposed to connect local-recovery procedures with global error recovery for the complete bioassay. Moreover, an integer linear programming-based method is also proposed to select the optimal local-recovery time for each operation. Laboratory experiments using a fabricated MEDA chip are used to characterize the outcomes of key droplet operations. The PRISM model checker and three benchmarks are used for an extensive set of simulations. Our results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed error-recovery strategy.Item type:Item, Electrical coupling between ventricular myocytes and myofibroblasts in the infarcted mouse heart(2018-03-01) ;Rubart, Michael ;Tao, Wen ;Lu, Xiao-Long ;Conway, Simon J.Reuter, Sean P.Recent studies have demonstrated electrotonic coupling between scar tissue and the surrounding myocardium in cryoinjured hearts. However, the electrical dynamics occurring at the myocyte-nonmyocyte interface in the fibrotic heart remain undefined. Here, we sought to develop an assay to interrogate the nonmyocyte cell type contributing to heterocellular coupling and to characterize, on a cellular scale, its voltage response in the infarct border zone of living hearts. We used two-photon laser scanning microscopy in conjunction with a voltage-sensitive dye to record transmembrane voltage changes simultaneously from cardiomyocytes and adjoined nonmyocytes in Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts with healing myocardial infarction. Transgenic mice with cardiomyocyte-restricted expression of a green fluorescent reporter protein underwent permanent coronary artery ligation and their hearts were subjected to voltage imaging 7-10 days later. Reporter-negative cells, i.e. nonmyocytes, in the infarct border zone exhibited depolarizing transients at a 1:1 coupling ratio with action potentials recorded simultaneously from adjacent, reporter-positive ventricular myocytes. The electrotonic responses in the nonmyocytes exhibited slower rates of de- and repolarization compared to the action potential waveform of juxtaposed myocytes. Voltage imaging in infarcted hearts expressing a fluorescent reporter specifically in myofibroblasts revealed that the latter were electrically coupled to border zone myocytes. Their voltage transient properties were indistinguishable from those of nonmyocytes in hearts with cardiomyocyte-restricted reporter expression. The density of connexin43 expression at myofibroblast-cardiomyocyte junctions was similar to 5% of that in the intercalated disc regions of paired ventricular myocytes in the remote, uninjured myocardium, whereas the ratio of connexin45 to connexin43 expression levels at heterocellular contacts was similar to 1%. Myofibroblasts contribute to the population of electrically coupled nonmyocytes in the infarct border zone. The slower kinetics of myofibroblast voltage responses may reflect low electrical conductivity across heterocellular junctions, in accordance with the paucity of connexin expression at myofibroblast-cardiomyocyte contacts.Item type:Item, Simulating painted appearance of BTF materials(2018-03-01) ;Chen, Ta-En ;Huang, Tsung-Shian ;Lin, Wen-Chieh ;Chuang, Jung-Hong資訊工程學系Bidirectional texture function (BTF) provides a realistic representation for real-world materials; however, the representation does not allow users to append additional rendering effects to the BTF data in a simple and effective way. In this paper, we present an approach for generating the painted appearance on a material that is represented by a BTF. We first convert a BTF into a physical representation composed of a height-field and a spatially varying bidirectional reflectance distribution function (SVBRDF). This representation allows us to simulate the appearance of paints on the surface of a material by computing the reflectance and the height field of the painted material. During rendering, we combine an existing BTF rendering approach and the modified material data to simulate the painted appearance of the BTF materials. Our experiments show that the proposed approach can simulate the painted appearance of a material while preserving the characteristic appearance of the original BTF. Our approach is mainly suitable for less specular BTF materials that allow depth reconstruction.Item type:Item, The effects of dynamic industrial transition on sustainable development(2018-03-01) ;Tsai, Diana H. A. ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThis paper analyzes the dynamics of industrial development and structural changes, and its impacts on sustainable development. The weak form of the Porter Hypothesis is examined under industrial transition and structural changes. Explicitly incorporating the Markov regime switching mechanism in a productivity framework, we measure how sustainable development is affected and how firms are adjusted when facing industrial transition and structural changes. Applied to Taiwan manufacturing industries, the model is implemented to identify structural changes and to evaluate the viability of sustainable development under new constraints. This study suggests industries to adopt more sustainable practices which can promote and even improve industrial competitiveness. Such practices would empower economies to assess current structural changes and, based on the environmental implications, recommend future economic policy for sustainable development. C. ;Lee, A. W. ;Lee, S. J. ;Lin, Grace T. R.科技管理研究所Consumers are confused about the benefits of using smart watches due to the various insignificant functionalities included and the unclear value propositions promoted by smart watch manufacturers. In order to improve the quality of products and to provide features that can satisfy consumers' needs, technicians must understand the expectations of consumers. This paper recommends the use of quality function deployment (QFD), a method that integrates consumers' dynamic requirements with product designs, which can be represented using a House of Quality (HoQ) matrix diagram. Here, the unmet and uncovered needs of consumers relating to the smart watch are analyzed extensively using a questionnaire-based survey. The opinions of consumers and technicians are then examined, and a HoQ diagram is constructed to evaluate the relationship between the design attributes of smart watch and its technical attributes. Finally, the attributes that need to be improved are listed in a suggested order of priority. Item type:Item, Functional magnetic nanoparticles-assisted electrochemical biosensor for eosinophil cationic protein in cell culture(2018-03-01) ;Lee, Cheng-Yu ;Wu, Li-Ping ;Chou, Tzu-Ting ;Hsieh, You-Zung應用化學系A low-cost electrochemical biosensor, assisted by a new type of functional magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), has been developed to detect eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), a known biomarker of asthma, in cell culture. The heparin-modified magnetic NPs were mixed with a sample solution containing ECP. After ECP had been captured by the NPs, a magnetic field was applied behind a graphite-based screen-printed electrode. The functional magnetic NPs were attracted to the electrode, raising the ECP concentration near its surface. Because of the use of the functional magnetic NPs, the difference in the signal was amplified when applying larger sample volumes for detection, thereby enhancing the sensitivity of the biosensor. This approach provided a linear range for the analysis of the logarithm of the ECP concentration from 1 to 1000 nM, with a coefficient of determination 0.992; the limit of detection was 0.30 nM. The fabricated biosensor displayed good recovery in a cell culture medium incubated with the Beas-2 B cell line. The ability to detect the concentration of ECP in a cell culture at any time point should be useful for explaining contradictory findings regarding the relationship between the initial ECP concentration and the cell line. The influence of post-deposition annealing (PDA) temperature on GZO source/drain and device performance was studied. Device with a 300 degrees C annealing demonstrated excellent electrical characteristics with on/off current ratio of 2.13x10(8), saturation mobility of 10 cm(2)/V-s, and low subthreshold swing of 0.2 V/dec. The gate stacked LaAlO3/ZrO2 of AP-IGZO TFTs with highly transparent and conductive AP-GZO source/drain electrode show excellent gate control ability at a low operating voltage.Item type:Item, Time periodic evaporation heat transfer of R-134a in a narrow annular duct due to mass flow rate oscillation(2018-03-01) ;Chen, C. A. ;Lin, T. F. ;Yan, Wei-Mon ;Amani, Mohammad機械工程學系An investigation into the effect of mass flow rate oscillation on the R-134a evaporation heat transportation in a horizontal annular duct was experimentally conducted. The experiments were performed at different amplitudes (10, 20, and 30%) and periods (20, 30, 60, and 120 s) of the mass flux oscillation in a duct with different gap sizes (1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 mm). In this regard, the time variations of evaporation heat transportation coefficient and the heated wall temperature were also analyzed for the thermal characteristics of the oscillatory evaporation heat transfer. Measured results showed that the amplitude and period of the mass flux oscillation insignificantly affected the time-average heat transportation coefficient for the R-134a oscillatory evaporation heat transfer. However, the larger amplitudes and longer periods of the mass flux oscillation led to stronger wall temperature oscillations. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. By studying and comparing the mesomorphic behavior of dendritic LCs with various core units and peripheral mesogenic units, their packing principle is established. It is found that the chirality, connecting position, and curvature of the peripheral mesogenic units play significant roles in the resulting self-assembly structures of dendritic LCs, whereas the core symmetry and strength of intramolecular interaction affect the geometry and conformational preferences of the dendritic LCs. This fundamental knowledge gives useful guidelines to predict the self-assembly behaviors of novel functional molecular nanoparticles, which share very similar molecular architecture with dendritic LCs.Item type:Item, Item type:Item, Top-Illuminated In0.52Al0.48As-Based Avalanche Photodiode With Dual Charge Layers for High-Speed and Low Dark Current Performances(2018-03-01) ;Chen, Yi-Han ;Wun, Jhih-Min ;Wu, Song-Lin ;Chao, Rui-LinHuang, Jack Jia-ShengA novel type of top-illuminated, etch-mesa In0.52Al0.48 As-based avalanche photodiode (APD) with high-speed (>25 Gb/s), low dark current performance has been demonstrated. The 25G APD device is composed of n-side down design with the In0.52Al0.48As multiplication (M) layer buried at the bottom to avoid the issues of surface breakdown and complex guard ring structure. In addition, we demonstrate that the new structure with two charge layers and triple mesas can effectively confine the electric-field within the center of M-layer and minimize the edge breakdown around the periphery of mesa. In contrast to the costly flip-chip bonding package with backside illumination, our demonstrated device is based on a simple top-illuminated structure that includes a large active diameter of 30 mu m for easy optical alignment, a reasonable punch-through responsivity (0.7 A/W at 1.31 mu m wavelength), and a good 3-dB optical-to-electrical (O-E) bandwidth (22.5 GHz) under low gain operations (M-G = similar to 3). Furthermore, it can sustain the 3-dB bandwidth of 15 GHz over a wide range of launched optical power (-17 to + 4.6 dBm) under a moderate gain (M-G = similar to 5) operation at 1.31 mu m wavelength. High-sensitivity (-16 dBm) for error-free 28 Gb/s operation can also be achieved at 1.55 mu m wavelength.Item type:Item, Infrared spectra of isotopomers of chloromethylene in solid argon(2018-03-01) ;Lin, Meng-Yeh ;Huang, Tzu-Ping ;Chin, Chih-Hao ;Lee, Yin-YuWu, Yu-JongWe measured the IR spectra of the solid Ar-trapped chloromethylene (HCCl) prepared by electron bombardment of a CH3Cl/Ar mixture during matrix deposition. Irradiation of matrix samples at 210 nm decreased the intensity of lines corresponding to HCCl, whereas irradiation at 385 nm had an opposite effect. The above behavior allowed an unambiguous identification of all vibrational modes of HCCl, and the obtained assignments were further confirmed by quantum chemical calculations and C-13/H-2 isotopic labeling experiments. This paper provides new solutions to this critical issue through co-optimization with the hardware-applicable deep-learning algorithms. New insights on engineering activation functions and a threshold weight update scheme effectively suppress the undesirable training noise induced by inaccurate weight update. We successfully trained a two-layer perceptron network online and improved the classification accuracy of MNIST handwritten digit data set to 87.8%/94.8% by using 6-/8-b analog synapses, respectively, with extremely high asymmetric nonlinearity.Item type:Item, Sample Size Determination for Examining Interaction Effects in Factorial Designs Under Variance Heterogeneity(2018-03-01) ;Shieh, Gwowen ;交大名義發表 ;管理科學系 ;National Chiao Tung UniversityDepartment of Management ScienceModeration analysis is a vital aspect of research in education, management, psychology, and related disciplines. Although several methodological artifacts have been identified and examined, heterogeneity of variance remains one of the unique and problematic factors known as detrimental to statistical power in the detection of moderating effects. To alleviate the difficulty in assessing moderation because of low statistical power, this article describes feasible solutions to sample size calculations for tests of hypothesized interactions between categorical variables under variance heterogeneity. Detailed numerical illustrations and simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the feature and usefulness of the suggested technique for 2- and 3-way factorial designs. Moreover, SAS and R programs are provided to facilitate the implementation of the proposed sample size procedure.Item type:Item, Giant Photoresponse in Quantized SrRuO3 Monolayer at Oxide Interfaces(2018-03-01) ;Liu, Heng-Jui ;Wang, Jing-Ching ;Cho, Deok-Yong ;Ho, Kang-TingLin, Jheng-CyuanThe photoelectric effect in semiconductors is the main mechanism for most modern optoelectronic devices, in which the adequate bandgap plays the key role for acquiring high photoresponse. Among numerous material categories applied in this field, the complex oxides exhibit great possibilities because they present a wide distribution of band gaps for absorbing light with any wavelength. Their physical properties and lattice structures are always strongly coupled and sensitive to light illumination. Moreover, the confinement of dimensionality of the complex oxides in the heterostructures can provide more diversities in designing and modulating the band structures. On the basis of this perspective, we have chosen itinerary ferromagnetic SrRuO3 as the model material, and fabricated it in one-unit-cell thickness in order to open a small band gap for effective utilization of visible light. By inserting this SrRuO3 monolayer at the interface of the well-developed two-dimensional electron gas system (LaAlO3/SrTiO3), the resistance of the monolayer can be further revealed. In addition, a giant enhancement (>300%) of photoresponse under illumination of visible light with power density of 500 mW/cm(2) is also observed. Such can be ascribed to the further modulation of band structure of the SrRuO3 monolayer under the illumination, confirmed by cross-section scanning tunneling microscopy (XSTM). Therefore, this study demonstrates a simple route to design and explore the potential low dimensional oxide materials for future optoelectronic devices.
