Item type:Item, TiO2 Nanowire-Supported Sulfide Hybrid Photocatalysts for Durable Solar Hydrogen Production(2019-01-23) ;Hsieh, Ping-Yen ;Chiu, Yi-Hsuan ;Lai, Ting-Hsuan ;Fang, Mei-JingWang, Yu-TingAs the feet of clay, photocorrosion induced by hole accumulation has placed serious limitations on the widespread deployment of sulfide nanostructures for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Developing sufficiently stable electrodes to construct durable PEC systems is therefore the key to the realization of solar hydrogen production. Here, an innovative charge-transfer manipulation concept based on the aligned hole transport across the interface has been realized to enhance the photostability of In2S3 electrodes toward PEC solar hydrogen production. The concept was realized by conducting compact deposition of In2S3 nanocrystals on the TiO2 nanowire array. Under PEC operation, the supporting TiO2 nanowires functioned as an anisotropic charge-transfer backbone to arouse aligned charge transport across the TiO2-In2S3 interface. Because of the aligned hole transport, the TiO2 nanowire-supported In2S3 hybrid nanostructures (TiO2 In2S3) exhibited improved hole-transfer dynamics at the TiO2-In2S3 interface and enhanced hole injection kinetics at the electrode surface, substantially increasing the long-term photostability toward solar hydrogen production. The PEC durability tests showed that TiO2-In2S3 electrodes can achieve nearly 90.9% retention of initial photocurrent upon continuous irradiation for 6 h, whereas the pure In2S3 merely retained 20.8% of initial photocurrent. This double-gain charge-transfer manipulation concept is expected to convey a viable approach to the intelligent design of highly efficient and sufficiently stable sulfide photocatalysts for sustainable solar fuel generation.Item type:Item, Epitaxial Growth of Optically Thick, Single Crystalline Silver Films for Plasmonics(2019-01-23) ;Cheng, Fei ;Lee, Chien-Ju ;Choi, Junho ;Wang, Chun-YuanZhan, QiangSingle crystalline Ag films on dielectric substrates have received tremendous attention recently due to their technological potentials as low loss plasmonic materials. Two different growth approaches have been used to produce single crystalline Ag films previously. One approach is based on repetitive cycles of a two-step process (low temperature deposition followed by RT annealing) using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), which is extremely time-consuming due to the need for repeat growth cycles. Another approach is based on rapid e-beam deposition which is capable of growing thick single crystalline Ag films (>300 nm) but lacks the precision in thickness control of thin epitaxial films. Here, we report a universal approach to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films by eliminating the repetitive cycles used in the previous two-step MBE method while maintaining the precise thickness control from a few monolayers to the optically thick regime, thus overcoming the limitations of the two aforementioned methods. In addition, we develop an in situ growth of aluminum oxide as the capping layer to protect the epitaxial Ag films. The quality of the epitaxial Ag films was evaluated using a variety of techniques, and the superior optical performance of the films is demonstrated by measuring the propagation length of surface plasmon polaritons (similar to 80 mu m at 632 nm) as well as their capability to support a plasmonic nanolaser in infrared incorporating an InGaAsP quantum well as the gain media.Item type:Item, Zr-MOF/Polyaniline Composite Films with Exceptional Seebeck Coefficient for Thermoelectric Material Applications(2019-01-23) ;Lin, Chih-Chien ;Huang, Yi-Chia ;Usman, Muhammad ;Chao, Wen-HsuanLin, Wei-KengControlling the polymerization of aniline in the presence of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) using polystyrene sulfonic acid as a dopant resulted in the formation of a new type of freestanding thermoelectric composite film. Polyaniline chains interpenetrate into the Zr-MOFs to enhance the crystallinity of polyaniline, resulting in an improved degree of electrical conductivity. In addition, the inherent porosity of the Zr-MOFs functions to suppress the increase in thermal conductivity, thus dramatically promoting a negative Seebeck coefficient. When 20 wt % Zr-MOF was used, a power factor of up to 664 mu W/(m K-2) was obtained, which was accompanied by a surprisingly large, negative Seebeck coefficient. The new class of MOF-based composites offers a new direction for developing new types of efficient thermoelectric materials.Item type:Item, Genome-wide transcriptome analysis to further understand neutrophil activation and lncRNA transcript profiles in Kawasaki disease(2019-01-23) ;Ko, Tai-Ming ;Chang, Jeng-Sheng ;Chen, Shih-Ping ;Liu, Yi-MinChang, Chia-JungKawasaki disease (KD) is the most common cause of acquired cardiac disease in children in developed countries. However, little is known regarding the role of transcriptomic targets of KD in the disease progression and development of complications, especially coronary artery aneurysms (CAA). The aim of our study was to identify transcripts affected by KD and their potential role in the disease. We enrolled 37 KD patients and collected blood samples along a comprehensive time-course. mRNA profiling demonstrated an abundance of CD177 transcript in acute KD, and in the intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG)-resistant group compared to in the IVIG-sensitive group. lncRNA profiling identified XLOC_006277 as the most highly expressed molecule. XLOC_006277 expression in patients at acute stage was 3.3-fold higher relative to patients with convalescent KD. Moreover, XLOC_006277 abundance increased significantly in patients with CAA. XLOC_006277 knockdown suppressed MMP-8 and MMP-9 expression, both associated with heart lesions. Our result suggested that the increase of CD177(pos) neutrophils was associated with KD. Moreover, this study provided global long non-coding RNA transcripts in the blood of patients with KD, IVIG-resistant KD, or CAA. Notably, XLOC_006277 abundance was associated with CAA, which might contribute to further understanding of CAA pathogenesis in KD.Item type:Item, Facet-Dependent Photocatalytic Behaviors of ZnS-Decorated Cu2O Polyhedra Arising from Tunable Interfacial Band Alignment(2019-01-23) ;Naresh, Gollapally ;Hsieh, Pei-Lun ;Meena, Vandana ;Lee, Shih-KuangChiu, Yi-HsuanZnS particles were grown over Cu2O cubes, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra for examination of their facet-dependent photocatalytic behaviors. After ZnS growth, Cu2O cubes stay photocatalytically inactive. ZnS-decorated Cu2O octahedra show enhanced photocatalytic activity, resulting from better charge carrier separation upon photo excitation. Surprisingly, Cu2O rhombic dodecahedra give greatly suppressed photocatalytic activity after ZnS deposition. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra agree with these experimental observations. Time-resolved photoluminescence profiles provide charge-transfer insights. The decrease in the photocatalytic activity is attributed to an unfavorable band alignment caused by significant band bending within the Cu2O(110)/ZnS(200) plane interface. A modified Cu2O-ZnS band diagram is presented. Density functional theory calculations generating plane -specific band energy diagrams of Cu2O and ZnS match well with the experimental results, showing that charge transfer across the Cu2O(110)/ZnS(200) plane interface would not happen. This example further illustrates that the actual photocatalysis outcome for semiconductor heterojunctions cannot be assumed because interfacial charge transfer is strongly facet-dependent.Item type:Item, Supercapacitive Properties of Micropore- and Mesopore-Rich Activated Carbon in Ionic-Liquid Electrolytes with Various Constituent Ions(2019-01-24) ;Quoc Dat Nguyen ;Patra, Jagabandhu ;Hsieh, Chien-Te ;Li, JianlinDong, Quan-FengIonic-liquid (IL) electrolytes, characterized by large potential windows, intrinsic ionic conductivity, low environmental hazard, and high safety, are used for micropore- and mesopore-rich activated-carbon (AC(micro) and AC(meso)) supercapacitors. IL electrolytes consisting of various cations [1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (EMI+), N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium (PMP+), and N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium (BMP+)] and various anions [bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TFSI-), BF4-, and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI-)] are investigated. The electrolyte conductivity, viscosity, and ion transport properties at the AC(micro) and AC(meso) electrodes are studied. In addition, the capacitance, rate capability, and cycling stability of the two types of AC electrodes are systematically examined and post-mortem material analyses are conducted. The effects of IL composition on the charge-discharge capacitances of the AC(micro) electrodes are more pronounced than those for the AC(meso) electrodes. The FSI-based IL electrolytes, for which electrochemical properties are cation dependent, are found to be promising. Incorporating EMI+ with FSI- results in a low electrolyte viscosity and a fast ion transport, giving rise to optimized electrode capacitance and rate capability. Replacing EMI+ with PMP+ increases the cell voltage (to 3.5 V) and maximum energy density (to 42 Wh kg(-1)) of the AC(micro) cell at the cost of cycling stability.Item type:Item, Characteristics of flexible and transparent Eu2O3 resistive switching memory at high bending condition(2019-01-25) ;Aluguri, R. ;Sailesh, R. ;Kumar, D. ;Tseng, Tseung-Yuen材料科學與工程學系The characteristics of ITO/Eu2O3/ITO/PET transparent and flexible resistive switching memory are studied. The device exhibits superior characteristics such as device area-independent and forming-free resistive switching behavior with a resistance on/off ratio of 10(4), good retention of >10(4) s and high AC endurance of >10(7) cycles. The conduction mechanism of the high-resistance state is the Poole-Frenkel mechanism, while that of the low-resistance state is ohmic conduction. The electrical characteristics of the flexible device have shown excellent results up to 5 mm bending radius, at which a degradation in the on/off ratio of the memory window is observed, due to the change in the dielectric layer resistance. The resistive switching characteristics can be improved during bending up to the radius of 2 mm by the incorporation of an aluminum-doped zinc oxide layer in the device as the bottom electrode, proving its application in future flexible and transparent memory devices.Item type:Item, Palladium-catalyzed N1-selective allylation of indoles with allylic alcohols promoted by titanium tetraisopropoxide(2019-01-25) ;Chang, Chieh-Yu ;Lin, Yu-Huan ;Wu, Yen-Ku ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryThe direct N1-selective allylation of indoles with allylic alcohols has been accomplished by synergistic functions of palladium catalysts and titanium tetraisopropoxide. The site selectivity is notably different from that observed in other related transition metal-catalyzed approaches. This chemistry provides a facile route to a variety of allylated indoles in synthetically useful yields. The utility of this simple allylation reaction was demonstrated with the first total synthesis of (+)-N-(4-hydroxyprenyl)-cyclo(alanyltryptophyl), which was completed in five steps, starting from l-tryptophan methyl ester hydrochloride.Item type:Item, Tumor targeting with DGEA peptide ligands: a new aromatic peptide amphiphile for imaging cancers(2019-01-25) ;Zhan, Fu-Kai ;Liu, Jyun-Cheng ;Cheng, Bill ;Liu, Yen-ChuLai, Tsung-ShengWe report a novel fluorescent bioprobe, tetraphenylethylene-Phe-Asp-Gly-Glu-Ala (TPE-FDGEA), and its self-assembly behavior, photophysical properties, and biocompatibility. The hydrogelator TPE-FDGEA exhibited aggregation-induced emission characteristics, which facilitated imaging of PC-3 human prostate cancer cells, thereby demonstrating the utility of such fluorescent probes for specific labeling of target cells in vitro.Item type:Item, Dry ice fog extraction of volatile organic compounds(2019-01-25) ;Yang, Hui-Hsien ;Urban, Pawel L. ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryExtraction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into a condensed phase requires maximizing the surfaceto-volume ratio of the extracting medium. In the case of the solid-phase extracting media, the surfaceto-volume ratio can be increased by implementing porous monoliths or particles with different size. In the case of the liquid-phase extracting media, the surface-to-volume ratio can be increased by generating microbubbles or aerosol microdroplets. Here, we propose dry ice fog extraction (DIFE) approach. Briefly, aerosol microdroplets are generated by inserting dry ice into the extraction solvent. The produced fog, containing high-density microdroplets, is directed toward the sample headspace, where the gas-liquid extraction occurs. The microdroptets, containing the extracted VOCs, subsequently coalesce on a cold surface. The movement of the microdroplets is facilitated by a small pressure difference between the fog generator and the extract collector. Within several minutes, a few hundred microliters of the extract are collected, which is sufficient for chromatographic and mass spectrometric analyses. In this proof-ofconcept study, the DIFE approach was characterized by using gas chromatography coupled with electron ionization mass spectrometry (MS), as well as direct infusion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization MS. The limits of detection for linalool and menthol were 2.0 x 10(-6) and 4.7 x 10(-5) M, respectively. The method was further applied in analyses of VOCs emanating from a variety of liquid and solid matrices (ecigarette "vapor", cinnamon branch, curly spearmint leaves, lily petal, garlic bulb, ginger root, mouthwash, shampoo, spoiled seafood, toothpaste, and red wine). D1FE effectively isolated the VOCs associated with these complex matrices. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. This study examined the effectiveness of various vaccine policies against influenza. The transmission rate was calculated by use of the time-series influenza-like illness case during the year of 2009 and recent epidemics in Taiwan. Methods. We developed a stochastic compartmental model to analyze the transmission of influenza, where the population was stratified by location and age group, and the vaccine distribution was considered using the current policy. The simulation study compared the previous vaccine policy and a new policy with expanded coverage and various lengths of the vaccination campaign. The sensitivity analysis investigated different levels of vaccine efficacy to confirm the robustness of the recommended policies. Results. Doubling vaccine coverage can decrease the number of infections effectively in the regular epidemic scenario. However, a peak of infections occurs if the duration of implementing vaccination is too long. In the 2009-like pandemic scenario, both increasing vaccine doses and reducing the program's duration can mitigate infections, although the early outbreak restricts the effectiveness of vaccination programs. Conclusions. The finding indicates that only increasing vaccine coverage can reduce influenza infections. To avoid the peak of infections, it is also necessary to execute the vaccination activity immediately. Vaccine efficacy significantly impacts the vaccination policy's performance. When vaccine efficacy is low, neither increasing vaccination doses nor reducing vaccination timeframe prevents infections. Therefore, the variation in vaccine efficacy should be taken into account when making immunization policies against influenza.Item type:Item, Formation and infrared identification of protonated fluoranthene isomers 3-, 9-, and 10-C16H11+ in solid para-H-2(2019-01-28) ;Chakraborty, Arghya ;Lee, Yuan-Pern ;交大名義發表 ;應用化學系應用化學系分子科學碩博班Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their derivatives are prospective carriers of unidentified infrared (UIR) emission features observed in interstellar media. Fluoranthene (C16H10) is a simple planar PAH with five- and six-membered rings; it can be considered as a fragment of C-60, which, along with its cationic counterpart, has been identified in interstellar media. Protonated fluoranthene, C16H11+, was generated upon electron bombardment during deposition at 3.2 K of p-H-2 containing fluoranthene in a small proportion. The intensities of infrared features of C16H11+ decreased after maintaining the matrix in darkness because of its neutralization with trapped electrons. According to the correlations in intensities upon neutralization and secondary photolysis, observed lines were classified into three groups which are assigned to isomers 3-C16H11+, 9-C16H11+, and 10-C16H11+. Experimental vibrational wavenumbers and relative IR intensities of the features agree with corresponding calculated values predicted for these three isomers of C16H11+ with the B3PW91/6-311++G(2d,2p) method. 3-C16H11+ and 9-C16H11+ are predicted to have the lowest energy (within 5 kJ mol(-1)), whereas 10- and 1-C16H11+ are lying above the global minimum 3-C16H11+ by approximate to 20 kJ mol(-1). However, definitive identification of 1-C16H11+ could not be made as only the most intense line is tentatively assigned. Although the observed spectra of these isomers match unsatisfactorily with the UIR bands, they will facilitate the potential terrestrial and extraterrestrial identification of these species.Item type:Item, Cysteamine-modified diamond nanoparticles applied in cellular imaging and Hg2+ ions detection(2019-01-28) ;Shellaiah, Muthaiah ;Simon, Turibius ;Venkatesan, Parthiban ;Sun, Kien WenKo, Fu-HsiangLuminescent cysteamine-modified nanodiamond particles (ND-Cys) have been reported in surface-mediated energy transfer, cell imaging, and metal-ion recognition studies. In normalized photoluminescence (PL) spectral studies, the emission maxima of ND-Cys (at 50 mu g/mL in water) was fixed at 438 nm at 350 nm excitation, producing a blue emission with a quantum yield (Phi) of 0.13. In the dispersion range of 0-800 mu g/mL, ND-Cys exhibited agglomeration-induced energy transfer via red shifting of the PL peak from 438 nm to 451 nm. Analogous to PL studies, Raman interrogations also established the agglomeration and fixed the saturation limit to 500 mu g/mL in water. The low toxicity and biocompatibility of ND-Cys were demonstrated using methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay and time-dependent HeLa cell imaging. Subsequently, the Hg2+ selectivity by ND-Cys was revealed by an intense fluorescence peak shift from 440 nm to 463 nm. Fluorescence studies indicated that the detection limit of Hg2+ ions approximated 153 nM. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses supported the binding between free thiol (-SH) and amide (-C=O and -NH) groups of ND-Cys to Hg2+. The Hg2+-induced agglomeration and surface graphitization were successfully confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, XPS, Raman, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential analyses. Effective detection of Hg2+ ions by ND-Cys was validated through HeLa cell imaging at shortened time intervals.Item type:Item, High quality 10.6 mu m AIN grown on pyramidal patterned sapphire substrate by MOCVD(2019-01-28) ;Long, Hanling ;Dai, Jiangnan ;Zhang, Yi ;Wang, ShuaiTan, BoIn this letter, we demonstrate a crack and strain free AlN epilayer with a thickness of 10.6 mu m grown on a pyramidal patterned sapphire substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The full width at half maximum of the X-ray rocking curve was 165/185 arcsec for (002)/(102) planes, respectively. The total threading dislocation density was less than 3 x 10(8) cm(-2). The dislocation evolution and the coalescence process were probed by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A dual coalescence of the AlN epilayer was observed, which can effectively relax strain during the heteroepitaxy process. Owing to the approximately entire strain relaxation demonstrated by reciprocal space mapping and Raman shift, the surface morphology was crack-free and atomically smooth with a root-mean-square roughness of 0.14 nm. Temperature dependent Raman spectra showed the Raman linewidth of 4.3 cm(-1) at 300 K which was comparable to that of bulk AlN; it also demonstrated good crystalline quality of the AlN epilayer. Literature has documented mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) as an efficient treatment for improving well-being, specifically related to the mood and cognition, in a variety of populations. However, little attention has been devoted to neural mechanisms with regard to bereaved individuals' cognition after MBCT intervention. In this study, we recruited 23 bereaved participants who lost a significant relative within 6 months to 4 years to attend 8-week MBCT course. We used self-reporting questionnaires to measure emotion regulation and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with the numerical Stroop task to evaluate the MBCT effect on executive control among the bereaved participants. The self-reported questionnaires showed improvements on mindfulness and reductions in grief, difficulties in emotion regulation, anxiety, and depression after the MBCT intervention. The fMRI analysis demonstrated two scenarios: (1) the activity of the fronto-parietal network slightly declined accompanied with significant improvements in the reaction time of incongruent trials; (2) the activities in the posterior cingulate cortex and thalamus were positively associated with the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, implying emotional interferences on cognitive functions. Results indicated that MBCT facilitated the executive control function by alleviating the emotional interferences over the cognitive functions and suggested that the 8-week MBCT intervention significantly improved both executive control and emotion regulation in bereaved individuals.Item type:Item, Infections Caused by Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae: An Update on Therapeutic Options(2019-01-30) ;Sheu, Chau-Chyun ;Chang, Ya-Ting ;Lin, Shang-Yi ;Chen, Yen-HsuHsueh, Po-RenCarbapenems are considered as last-resort antibiotics for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. With the increasing use of carbapenems in clinical practice, the emergence of carbapenem-resistant pathogens now poses a great threat to human health. Currently, antibiotic options for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are very limited, with polymyxins, tigecycline, fosfomycin, and aminoglycosides as the mainstays of therapy. The need for new and effective anti-CRE therapies is urgent. Here, we describe the current understanding of issues related to CRE and review combination therapeutic strategies for CRE infections, including high-dose tigecycline, high-dose prolonged-infusion of carbapenem, and double carbapenem therapy. We also review the newly available antibiotics which have potential in the future treatment of CRE infections: ceftazidime/avibactam, which is active against KPC and OXA-48 producers; meropenem/vaborbactam, which is active against KPC producers; plazomicin, which is a next-generation aminoglycoside with in vitro activity against CRE; and eravacycline, which is a tetracycline class antibacterial with in vitro activity against CRE. Although direct evidence for CRE treatment is still lacking and the development of resistance is a concern, these new antibiotics provide additional therapeutic options for CRE infections. Finally, we review other potential anti-CRE antibiotics in development: imipenem/relebactam and cefiderocol. Currently, high-dose and combination strategies that may include the new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors should be considered in severe CRE infections to maximize treatment success. In the future, when more treatment options are available, therapy for CRE infections should be individualized and based on molecular phenotypes of resistance, susceptibility profiles, disease severity, and patient characteristics. More high-quality studies are needed to guide effective treatment for infections caused by CRE.Item type:Item, Switching Behavior and Forward Bias Degradation of 700V, 0.2A, beta-Ga2O3 Vertical Geometry Rectifiers(2019-01-30) ;Yang, Jiancheng ;Fares, Chaker ;Ren, Fan ;Chen, Yen-TingLiao, Yu-TeWe report the switching recovery characteristics of large area (contact dimension 0.04 x 0.04 cm(2)) vertical geometry beta-Ga2O3 Schottky rectifiers, consisting of Si-doped epitaxial layers on conducting bulk substrates. Devices that were switched from forward current of 0.225 A to reverse off-state voltage of -700 V in an inductive load test circuit showed a recovery time (t(rr)) of 82 ns, with a reverse recovery current (I-rr) of 38 mA and dI/dt of -2.28 A. mu sec(-1). This shows the potential of Ga2O3 rectifiers for power switching applications, provided effective thermal management schemes can be implemented. Devices deliberately tested to failure under forward bias conditions exhibit delamination and cracking of the Ni/Au contact and underlying epitaxial Ga2O3 due to the low thermal conductivity of the Ga2O3. This failure mode is different to that under high reverse breakdown conditions, where pits formed by material failure under the high field generated at the edge of the rectifying contact occurs. Typically, however, their tunable conductivity is the result of migrating ions within a stochastically formed filament, and as such their combined resistor-memory performance suffers. Here we show that amorphous silicon compositions, which are doped with oxygen or nitrogen and sandwiched between metal electrodes, can be used to create purely electronic memristors. The devices have coherent electron wave functions that extend to the full device thickness (more than 15 nm) and, despite the thinness and very high aspect ratio of the devices, electrons still follow an isotropic, three-dimensional pathway, thus providing uniform conductivity at the nanoscale. Such pathways in amorphous insulators are derived from overlapping gap states and regulated by trapped charge, which is stabilized by electron-lattice interaction. As a result, the nanometallic memristors also exhibit pressure-triggered insulator-to-metal transitions. Our silicon-based memristors, which could be readily integrated into silicon technology, are purely electronic and offer switching capabilities that are fast, uniform, durable, multi-state and low power.Item type:Item, Effects of Negative Electrodes Coated by ZnO with Different Morphologies on Electrochemical Performances and Safety of Lithium Ion Batteries(2019-02-01) ;Chang, Chia-Ming ;Lin, Hsiu-Fen ;Liao, Shih-Chieh ;Chiu, Hsin-TienLiu, Chia-ErhTo improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries, this study applied topographically different ZnO to the surface of negative graphite electrodes to serve as heat-resistant layers and explored the effects of these layers on a battery's electrochemical and safety features. The results indicate that when using a tetrapod ZnO (T-ZnO) particle coating as a heat-resistant layer on a negative graphite electrode, ion diffusion is improved because T-ZnO has a three-dimensional network structure and forms highly porous layers. This causes batteries to retain excellent electrochemical characteristics even if they contain inactive substances. Moreover, the results of overcharge and penetration tests were satisfactory, suggesting that the batteries are highly safe.
