客家族群的嘗會與土地產權：以頭前、鳳山兩溪流域為例

Abstract

以往關於台灣開發的研究顯示，集體性的組織在開發過程中扮演極重要角色。學者也曾經專文討論過清代漢人在台灣土地的開發過程中，經常採用「合股經營」的模式，同時認為這種合股經營的方式，應該是十八世紀以來台灣土地墾殖極為重要的方法之一。 客家族群多數是在十八世紀來到台灣，在拓墾土地的過程中也經常採用這種合股經營的模式。陳秋坤在屏東平原的研究指出，當地土地產權從原先的不在地閩南籍地主所擁有，逐漸移轉到客家嘗會，而且這些宗族合股組成的「嘗會」，所擁有的土地在地方社會中往往佔有相當高的比例。透過這些嘗會的研究，可以了解漢人在屏東平原的開發過程中，客家與其他族群之間的互動關係。 新竹也是台灣客家人相當集中的地區，特別是鳳山溪與頭前溪兩河流經的鄉鎮，客家佔了絕大多數的人口。在這兩溪流域活動的客家族群，也如屏東平原的客家，存在著許多嘗會組織。嘗會的普遍存在，其背景和屏東平原是否相同？同時這些嘗會是否也與地方社會的產權分配有密切關係？本計畫希望透過頭前、鳳山兩溪流域嘗會的研究，了解客家在此地的發展，以及與其他人群互動的過程。透過這個研究的結果與屏東平原做比較，可以對客家社會有更深入的了解。 頭前溪流經的行政區包含今橫山鄉、竹東鎮、芎林鄉、竹北市、新竹市；鳳山溪則流經關西鎮、新埔鎮、竹北市。這些行政區除了新竹市與竹北市之外，幾乎都以客家人為主，包含的範圍極為廣大。因此本計畫選擇的地點，主要分布在頭前溪與鳳山溪兩河之間，以重要家族的聚落與自然村為抽樣研究的對象。這些地區有日治時期的土地申告書，嘗會的會份簿，以及多本碩博士論文的研究基礎，以往的研究並未探討客家嘗會與地權分配的相關問題。本計畫的進行將密切配合其他學者的族群產業、民間宗教、聚落與建築、戲曲與音樂、語言與文學等面向的研究，以期對頭前、鳳山兩溪客家族群的聚落、歷史和社會變遷有全貌性的了解。

This project has three primary goals: (1) to document the relationship between Hakka lineage associations and their land rights in the area of Touqian and Fengshan Rivers, (2) to clarify the historical and social roles of those lineage associations in the development of local society in this area, and (3) to understand the interactions between the Han and the Aboriginals from the perspective of land rights. Making comparisons with Dr. Chen Chiu-Kun’s 2004 research on Pingtung Plain in southern Taiwan, this project will analyze land rights in northern Taiwan using eighteenth and nineteenth century Qing dynasty era documents together with late nineteenth and early twentieth century Japanese colonial era government records. The ultimate goal is to: (1) comprehend the historical importance and processes in the development of land rights controlled by Hakka lineage associations; (2) to understand their socio-cultural meanings in ethnic relations in this area. In addition to archival research, research will also use in-depth interviews, especially with local elites and the descendants of those lineage associations we found in historical documents.
