Item type:Item, > 100-kW linearly polarized pulse fiber amplifier seeded by a compact efficient passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 Laser(2012-11-01) ;Zhuang, W. Z. ;Huang, W. C. ;Cho, C. Y. ;Huang, Y. P.Huang, J. Y.We thoroughly develop compact high-peak-power Nd:YVO4/Cr4+:YAG passively Q-switched lasers (PQS) as the seed source of the fiber amplifier. We exploit a nearly hemispherical cavity to reach the second threshold criterion and systematically consider the thermal lensing effect and the mode-size matching in the overall optimization. Employing a Cr4+:YAG absorber with 70% initial transmission, we obtain a 50-kHz seed pulse train with the pulse duration of 4.8 ns and the pulse energy of 22 mu J at a pump power of 5.4 W. Injecting this seed laser into a polarization maintained Yb-doped fiber, the pulse energy and peak power at a pump power of 16 W are enhanced up to 178 mu J and 37 kW, respectively. We also use an absorber with 40% initial transmission to generate a 25 kHz pulse train with the pulse duration of 1.6 ns and the pulse energy of 36 mu J at a pump power of 5.4 W. With this seed laser, we find that the surface damage of the fiber limits the maximum pulse energy and peak power to be 192 mu J and 120 kW, respectively.Item type:Item, 24-W cryogenically cooled Nd:YAG monolithic 946-nm laser with a slope efficiency > 70%(2015-04-20) ;Cho, C. Y. ;Lee, C. Y. ;Chang, C. C. ;Tuan, P. H.Huang, K. F.A high-power efficient monolithic Nd: YAG 946-nm laser is demonstrated at the cryogenic temperature. By exploring the absorption and the fluorescence spectra of the Nd: YAG crystal, it reveals the fact that the absorption bandwidth at 808 nm is narrowing and the fluorescence intensity at 1061 nm is significant enhanced when the temperature is decreased. The temperature dependence of the lasing threshold at 946 nm is found to display a minimum value near a temperature of 170 K. At an incident pump power of 34.5 W, the local heating leads the optimum temperature to be approximately 120 K and the maximum output power can reach 24.4 W with the conversion efficiency of 71% as well as the slope efficiency up to 75%. H. ;Yu, Y. T. ;Huang, K. F.Chen, Y. F.We experimentally explore the fluorescence spectra of the Nd:YAG (YAG: yttrium aluminum garnet) crystal at cryogenic temperatures to confirm the feasibility of dual-wavelength operation at 1061 and 1064 nm. Furthermore, a cryogenically cooled Nd:YAG crystal with coating to form a monolithic cavity is employed to investigate the performance of the dual-wavelength operation. At an incident pump power of 20 W, the output powers for each wavelength can simultaneously reach 6.0 W at the optimally balanced temperature of 152 K. The optimal temperature for balancing the output powers of the two wavelengths is experimentally determined as a function of the incident pump power intensity.Item type:Item, A high-power harmonically self- mode-locked Nd:YVO4 1.34-mu m laser with repetition rate up to 32.1 GHz(2014-04-01) ;Wu, T. W. ;Tsou, C. H. ;Tang, C. Y. ;Liang, H. C.Chen, Y. F.We develop a practical method to achieve harmonically self-mode-locked operation in a Nd:YVO4 1.34-mu m laser for the generation of high-repetition-rate pulse trains. We exploit a gain medium with partial-reflection coating at the lasing wavelength to introduce effective mode selection. We numerically demonstrate that the coated gain medium can effectively modify the mode spacing of the laser cavity to be the harmonics of the free spectral range of the gain medium when the optical cavity length is adjusted to be commensurate with the optical length of the gain medium. We further employ a coated Nd: YVO4 crystal to realize harmonically mode-locked operation with a highest repetition rate of up to 32.1 GHz. At a pump power of 11.5 W, the average output power of 2.3 W is generated with a pulse duration as short as 5.7 ps. The locking range for the cavity length is also experimentally explored.Item type:Item, AlGaInAs intracavity selective absorber for an efficient high-power Nd : YAG laser operation at 1.44 mu m(2008-07-01) ;Huang, Y. P. ;Chang, Y. T. ;Su, K. W. ;Chen, Y. F.Huang, K. F.We develop an AlGaInAs material as a promising intracavity selective absorber for an efficient high-power Nd:YAG laser at 1.44 mu m. With the ISA to suppress operation at 1.06 mu m, the output coupler at 1.44 mu m can be straightforwardly designed and optimized. At a pump power of 16 W an output power of 2.5 W at 1.44 mu m, with a slope efficiency of 23%, was achieved. Y. ;Cheng, H. P. ;Chang, Y. C. ;Tang, C. Y.Chen, Y. F.An energy adjustable passively Q-switched laser is demonstrated with a composite Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG crystal by applying a wedged interface inside the crystal. The theoretical model of the monolithic laser resonator is explored to show the energy adjustable feature with different initial transmissions of the saturable absorber at the horizontal axis. By adjusting the pump beam location across the Nd: YAG crystal, the output pulse energy can be flexibly changed from 10.9 mu J to 17.6 mu J while maintaining the same output efficiency. The polarization state of the laser output is found to be along with the polarization of the C-mount pump diode. Finally, the behavior of the multi-transverse-mode oscillation is also discussed for eliminating the instability of the pulse train. P. ;Huang, K. F.Chen, Y. F.The optimal temperature for the cryogenic monolithic Nd:YAG laser at 946-nm is theoretically and experimentally analyzed. It is clear that decreasing temperature can considerably eliminate the thermal population at the lower laser level to enhance the quantum efficiency. However, the narrowing of the absorption bandwidth for the gain medium leads to a reduction of the effective absorption efficiency as the temperature is decreased. Consequently, an optimal temperature for the maximum output power is found to be in the range of approximately 120 K to 140 K. It is experimentally verified that employing a pump source with a narrower emission spectrum linewidth contributes a more efficient output for the cryogenic laser. W. ;Chen, Y. F.電子物理學系An analytical model is developed for optimizing two key parameters of an external passive Q-switch in a fiber laser from the criterion of the minimum average mode area inside the saturable absorber. One parameter is the optimum focal position that is analytically derived to be a function of the thickness and initial transmission of the saturable absorber. The other parameter is the optimum magnification of the reimaging optics that is analytically derived to be in terms of the numerical aperture and core radius of the laser fiber as well as the thickness and initial transmission of the saturable absorber. To demonstrate the utilization of the present model, an experiment on the subject of the passively Q-switched fiber laser is performed and optimized. F.電子物理學系An analytical model has been developed to minimize the effective mode area in a saturable absorber for an external-cavity passively Q-switched fiber laser. Under the condition of minimum effective mode size inside the saturable absorber, the analytical expressions for two key parameters of an optimum system have been derived. One parameter is the optimum focal position that is analytically derived to be a function of the thickness and initial transmission of the saturable absorber. The other parameter is the optimum magnification of the re-imaging optics that is analytically derived to be in terms of the numerical aperture and core radius of the laser fiber as well as the thickness and initial transmission of the saturable absorber. The present model provides a straightforward procedure to adopt a focusing system for the output performance. A diode-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber lasers with a Cr:YAG crystal as a saturable absorber is considered to illustrate the utility of the present model.Item type:Item, Analytical representation for structured light generated by astigmatic transformation of Hermite-Gaussian beams(2018-01-01) ;Hsieh, Y. H. ;Tuan, P. H. ;Tung, J. C. ;Liang, H. C.Su, K. W.Theoretical wave functions are analytically derived to formulate the propagation evolution of the Hermite-Gaussian (HG) beams transformed by single lens astigmatic mode converter with arbitrary angle. The derived wave functions are associated with the combination of the rotation transform and the antisymmetric fractional Fourier transform. The derived formula are validated by the mode conversions of high-order HG beams generated by an off-axis diode-pumped solid-state laser. In addition to validation, the creation and evolution of vortex structures in the transformed HG beams are numerically manifested. The present theoretical model can be applied not only to characterize the evolution of the transformed beams but to design the optical vortex beams with various forms.Item type:Item, Astigmatism inducing the degenerate effect in nearly hemispherical cavities: Generation of three-dimensional structured light(2017-01-01) ;Tung, J. C. ;Hsieh, Y. H. ;Liang, H. C. ;Su, K. W.Huang, K. F.We originally perform an analytical form to explore the influence of the astigmatism on the degenerate effect in nearly hemispherical cavities. The frequency spectrum near hemispherical cavities clearly reveals that not only the difference of cavity lengths between each degeneracies but also frequency gaps have significant difference from non-hemispherical cavities. We further thoroughly demonstrate the laser experiment under the condition of nearly hemispherical cavities to confirm the theoretical exploration that the transverse topology of three-dimensional (3D) structured light in the degenerate cavities is well localized on the Lissajous curves.Item type:Item, Bimodel onset strain relaxation in InAs quantum dots with an InGaAs capping layer(2010-08-30) ;Chen, J. F. ;Chen, Ross C. C. ;Chiang, C. H. ;Chen, Y. F.Wu, Y. H.Capping InAs quantum dots (QDs) with an InGaAs layer allows strain relaxation to induce a low-energy electron state below a set of fine dot family states, which is consistent with photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The evolution of InAs thickness suggests a bimodal onset relaxation, i.e., a fine dot family that is strain-relieved by indium outdiffusion from the QDs, as suggested by transmission electron microscopy, and a low-energy dot family that is strain relaxed by the generation of lattice misfits. The indium outdiffusion can explain an abnormal PL blueshift in 70 meV in the fine dot family at onset of strain relaxation. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. T. ;Huang, T. L. ;Liang, H. C. ;Su, K. W.Chen, Y. F.Broad expansion of optical frequency comb (OFC) by the self-Raman scattering is numerically analyzed and experimentally accomplished in a coupled-cavity self-mode-locked (SML) monolithic Yb:KGW laser. The gain medium is coated to achieve the monolithic SML operation and a partially reflective mirror is further exploited to form the coupled cavity and to multiply the repetition rate up to 128.9 GHz. With a coupled reflectivity of 95%, it is experimentally found that not only the first-order but also second-order stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can be efficiently generated. The mode-locked OFC can be consequently expanded to reach approximately 8.4 THz, leading the pulse width to be as narrow as 53 fs. At the pump power of 8.7 W, the total output power for the fundamental and the first-and second-Stokes waves can be maintained at 1.6 W. The present exploration provides a promising way to generate the ultrahigh-repetition-rate broadband OFC via the simultaneous SML and SRS processes. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America
