Several kinds of optical switch have been presented such as polarization selective elements combined with electro-optic halfwave plates. Using these basic optical switches to construct a 4x4 nonblocking interconnection network, such as Benes network and double-layer network, needs three stages of optical switches. In this presentation, a 4x4 optical switch with polarization selective elements and electro-optic halfwave plates will be proposed. In this switch, the control configurations of electro-optic halfwave plates have been changed to support all switching states of polarization selective elements. Compared with 4x4 nonblocking interconnection networks, this 4x4 optical switch has the lowest system insertion loss and the fewest required components. Its structure and connection path for different switching functions will be discussed in detail.Item type:Item, A 10-Gb/s OEIC with Meshed Spatially-Modulated Photo Detector in 0.18-mu m CMOS Technology(2011-05-01) ;Huang, Shih-Hao ;Chen, Wei-Zen ;Chang, Yu-Wei ;Huang, Yang-Tung電子工程學系及電子研究所This paper describes the design of a 10-Gb/s fully integrated CMOS optical receiver, which consists of a novel spatially-modulated photo detector (SMPD), a low-noise trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), and a post-limiting amplifier on a single chip. The bandwidth of proposed meshed SMPD can be boosted up to 6.9 GHz under a reverse-biased voltage of 14.2 V. The measured responsivity of the meshed SMPD is 29 mA/W as illuminated by 850-nm light source. To compensate the relatively low responsivity of on-chip CMOS photo detector (PD), a high-gain TIA with nested feedback and shunt peaking is proposed to achieve low-noise operation. The optical receiver is capable of delivering 25-k Omega conversion gain when driving 50-Omega output loads. For a PRBS test pattern of 2(7)-1, the 10-Gb/s optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) has optical sensitivity of -6 dBm at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10(-11). Implemented in a generic 0.18-mu m CMOS technology, the chip area is 0.95 mm by 0.8 mm. The trans-impedance amplifier, post amplifier, and output buffer respectively drain 38 mW, 80 mW, and 27 mW from the 1.8-V supply.Item type:Item, A 3.125 Gbps CMOS fully integrated optical receiver with adaptive analog equalizer(2007) ;Chen, Wei-Zen ;Huang, Shih-Hao ;Wu, Guo-Wei ;Liu, Chuan-ChangHuang, Yang-TungThis paper presents the design of a 3.125 Gbps monolithic CMOS optical receiver, integrating a photo detector, a transimpedance amplifier, and a post limiting amplifier on a single chip. Manufactured in a standard 0.35-mu m CMOS technology, the phototransistor exhibits a responsivity higher than 1000 A/W for 650-nm light. The TMB/H(2)O(2)/HRP method is chosen as a useful platform to determine the amount of various interesting targets. For the biochemical detection, a sample volume of only 10 mu l is required to be dropped on the slide above the phototransistor. Experimental results demonstrate that a high sensitivity of 2.5 mu A/pM is achieved, and the minimum HRP concentration successfully detected is 2.7 pM. This detection limit is three orders of magnitude better than that of a reported silicon biosensor.Item type:Item, A CMOS-compatible optical biosensing system based on visible absorption spectroscopy(2007) ;Chang, Yu-Wei ;Yu, Ping-Chun ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Yang, Yuh-Shyong電子工程學系及電子研究所A CMOS-compatible optical biosensing system based on visible absorption spectroscopy is proposed. The ABTS/H(2)O(2)/HRP method is adopted as the ground for medical diagnosis, Experimental results demonstrate that the minimum concentration successfully detected for H(2)O(2) is 1 mu M. This imaging system simply consitutes three parts including the source, two optical lenses, and the detector. The entire size is smaller than the tranditional pulsed THz imaging system. In this developed system, the THz wave is generated by a horn attenna which concentrates the wave in an azimuth angle of 3 degrees similar to 5 degrees. The source originates from a singnal generator, and then the frequency increases to 288 GHz after passing through an 8X multiplier. Next, THz wave is focused by a THz lens on the test sample. By controling the sample position in the x-z plane, we can scan it pixel-by-pixel in which each step along the x- or z- axes is 0.1 mm. After penetrating the test sample, another lens collects the transmitted THz wave and focuses them into the thermal detector. This detector can disply the collected THz power. Finally, by drawing the detected power of each pixel, a transmitted-intensity figure for all pixels is obtained. The resolution of this THz imaging system is about 1 similar to 2 mm at present. We have measured human molar tooth and obtained its transmitted figures. Besides, we also develop a technology to adjust the positions of the source and detector by a system containing one laser, one beamsplitter, and two mirrors. The relative positions between the source and detector is very important. The input of the source and the output of the detector are small so that they have to aim at each other very accurately in order to collect maximum transmitted power in the detector.Item type:Item, A High-Sensitivity CMOS-Compatible Biosensing System Based on Absorption Photometry(2009-01-01) ;Chang, Yu-Wei ;Yu, Ping-Chun ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Yang, Yuh-Shyong生物科技學系An optical biosensing system based on a standard CMOS technology and absorption photometry is proposed. The detection limits are at least one order of magnitude better than those of reported CMOS biosensors, and are even comparable to those of a commercial spectrophotometer.Item type:Item, A High-Sensitivity CMOS-Compatible Immunosensor Based on the HRP/TMB/Streptavidin System(2008) ;Tai, Yu-Ting ;Chang, Yu-Wei ;Lin, Ming-Yu ;Yang, Yuh-ShyongHuang, Yang-TungIn this report, a CMOS-compatible colorimetric biosensor based on HRP/TMB/streptavidin system is proposed. HRP activity is used for labelled target quantification by photometric detector. The modulation of light intensity due to enzyme reaction can easily be detected in 96-well microarray plate by providing 650nm light source (LED). There is good correlation between absorbance in 650nm and the concentration of HRP-streptavidin with detection limit in 1.33 pM. This device is reusable and suits for various targets by microarray plate modification rather than biochip. With the advantage of portable, low cost, and reusable, this new designed immunosensor could be widely used for both research and diagnostic purposes.Item type:Item, A Miniature CMOS Optoelectronic Biosensor for Screening Skin-Whitening Agents(2009) ;Chang, Yu-Wei ;Lu, Yen-Pei ;Lin, Ming-Yu ;Huang, Yang-TungYang, Yuh-ShyongA miniature CMOS optoelectronic biosensor is proposed for screening whitening agents. Based on the principle of absorption photometry, this biosensor is mainly composed of a green LED, a CMOS phototransistor, and a slide for performing the biochemical reactions. The transfer-matrix method is used to derive an expression for the reflectance of a series of air slots and high-index stacks. The Full-WAVE software, a finite difference time-domain EM solver from R-Soft, is used to evaluate the loss of the resulting 2D waveguide grating. The simulation results show that the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is below 0.25 dB when the proposed dielectric mirror is used. The influence of the width variation of the dielectric stack is also taken into account. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Hence, optical multistage network technologies are more appreciated nowadays. A double-layer network is a strictly nonblocking network, and it has the lowest system insertion loss of non-dilated networks. A Benes network is a rearrangeably nonblocking network, and it has the same system insertion loss as a double-layer network. We have proposed the use of modified polarization selection elements (PSEs). The system insertion loss, number of drivers, and number of required components of a double-layer network could be reduced if it is constructed with modified PSEs. A nonblocking 4 x 4 optical switch with two stages of polarization selective elements has been presented in our previous study. Based on this nonblocking 4 x 4 optical switch, we propose a strictly nonblocking network structure which features even lower system insertion loss than those of a double-layer network and a Benes network. The signal-to-noise ratio of the proposed network structure is a constant, and is higher than the constraint, although it is lower than that of the double-layer network. The number of major components of the proposed network is less than that of a double-layer network and larger than that of a Benes network, since a Benes network is rearrangeably nonblocking. We also offer a routing algorithm for the new proposed network; the time complexity of the routing algorithm is O(1). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This photonic crystal is composed of rods of which axes are perpendicular to the two-dimensional anisotropic copper oxide plane. By tuning the temperature of the superconductor, the refractive index of the superconductor as well as the photonic band gap can be changed. The photonic band structures of two-dimensional photonic crystals composed of the superconductor are calculated by using the plane-wave expansion method, and interference properties are investigated by using the finite-difference time-domain method. For our designed photonic crystal Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the simulation results show that the light transmission can be modulated from 92.7% to 1.4% with different temperature distributions.Item type:Item, Analyzing the propagating waves in the two-dimensional photonic crystal by the decoupled internal-field expansion method(2012-03-01) ;Pei, Ting-Hang ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;電子工程學系及電子研究所 ;友訊交大聯合研發中心Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsWe propose the decoupled internal-field expansion (IFE) method to discuss refractions in the photonic crystal (PhC). This method decouples the full wave in the PhC and classifies them into two categories including the forward-propagating and backward-propagating waves denoted by the index n. A triangular-PhC case is demonstrated and both positive and negative refractions are discussed by this method. The incident angle of 10 degrees results in the positive refracted wave with the refracted angle about 8 degrees, which approximately corresponds to the forward wave of n = 0 order. The negative refracted waves, which exist in the left and right edge regions, propagate almost parallel to the interfaces between the PhC and outside media. Meanwhile, due to the interaction between the negative refracted wave and the nearest few rows of air cylinders, the reflected wave and another weaker negative refracted wave are created. Finally, the weaker negative refracted waves from both edge regions interfere with each other in the middle region. It is found out that the negative refracted waves in edge regions as well as the interfered wave in the middle region can be constructed by two n=-1 forward and backward waves. On the other hand, the positive refracted wave is composed of the n=0 forward wave dressed other n not equal 0 forward waves, the propagation angle is affected by these dressed waves, especially near the edge region. Finally, another case proves this point of view explicitly. Copyright 2012 Author(s). This article is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. The polarization splittings are attained by utilizing various characteristics of basic ARROW and/or ARROW-B. In comparison with conventional waveguides, ARROW structures utilizing antiresonant reflection as the guiding mechanism can have large core sizes compatible with single-mode fibers and, thus, provide better coupling. Design principles and characteristics of these ARROW polarization beam splitters are discussed in detail, and the simulation results show that all these devices have good polarization discrimination with crosstalk < -20 dB.Item type:Item, Arrow based coherently coupled bending waveguides(2005) ;Tsai, Ming-Jung ;Hsu, Shih-Hsin ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Kwei, Cheng-May電子工程學系及電子研究所Coherently coupled bending waveguides based on antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) structures are investigated. The ARROW structure can provide low-loss single-mode propagation with a relatively large core size for efficient connection to single-mode fibers. The flexible structural parameters of rib ARROW waveguides offer the possibility of optimization for various design considerations. For the total bending angles of 27.2 degrees and 91.2 degrees, the simulated system transmission efficiencies are -0.82 and -2.15 dB respectively. The corresponding device sizes are less than 10 mm(2).Item type:Item, Biochemical Sensors Based on Dual Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguides(2013) ;Lee, Cheng-Han ;Hsu, Hsin-Feng ;Lu, Ming-Feng ;Huang, Yang-Tung電子工程學系及電子研究所Design, fabrication, and characterization of biochemical sensors based on dual ARROW structures are studied. Flexibility, light-weight, on-axis coupling, easy alignment, easy fabrication, and compactness are their advantages. When use holographic optical elements to build the photonic delay line system, all of the delay and non-delay paths in these three photonic delay lines are setting in a compact structure. They do not need any extra components, such as mirrors and optical paths in free space, and can bear stronger vibration. Therefore, the holographic optical elements are more suitable to design the photonic delay lines. In these three structures, their losses and crosstalk s are balanced. All of delay and non-delay cases in these three delay line their crosstalk, signal-to-noise ratio, and loss are 1/81,000, 59.1 dB, and 3.2 dB, respectively. Finally, to support complete applications, a polarization independent photonic delay line system with holographic optical elements is proposed, too. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. In the first case, below 0.40 (c/a), the transmissions of effective 1D superlattices calculated by the effective medium theory (EMT) match those of two-alternating-PhC superlattices calculated by the internal-field expansion method. No matter whether the propagating direction is along the symmetric (along Gamma K or Gamma M directions) or nonsymmetric axes (incident angle theta = 45 degrees), the results hold very well. In the second case, resonant-tunneling phenomena and transmissions of the two-period superlattice composed of two alternating PhCs (the resonant-tunneling superlattice) can also be predicted by EMT below 0.20 (c/a). However, due to the evanescent waves at oblique incidence, the interface effect between two PhCs becomes explicit in the higher-frequency region and results in the deviations of resonant-tunneling frequencies in EMT calculations. By modifying the effective refractive indices of both PhCs, deviations are corrected and EMT calculations can exhibit resonant tunneling at right frequencies. Furthermore, the resonant-tunneling superlattice with larger background dielectric constant displays fewer modifications on the effective refractive indices. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
