Item type:Item, Wireless LAN medium access controller supporting mode change and mode change method thereof(2006-04-27) ;Lin, Yen-Liang ;Chang, Hsung-PinChang, Ruei-ChuanA wireless LAN medium access controller supporting mode change and the mode change method thereof are proposed. A physical layer detects signal strength in the environment and writes a mode index value of the stronger signal into a register. When the written mode index value is different from a mode index value in the communication system, a medium access controller is informed to perform mode change. The physical layer then sends out an interrupt signal to a central processor and sends the mode index value to the central processor for comparison via a DMA module and a memory. An interface module is used to access the mode index value in the memory for providing an external interface for the medium access control layer. When the mode index value doesn't conform to the signal in the environment, a software layer in the medium access controller is used for mode change.Item type:Item, A robust approach to t linear mixed models applied to multiple sclerosis data(2006-04-30) ;Lin, TI ;Lee, JC ;統計學研究所 ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Institute of StatisticsWe discuss a robust extension of linear mixed models based on the multivariate t distribution. Since longitudinal data are successively collected over time and typically tend to be autocorrelated, we employ a parsimonious first-order autoregressive dependence structure for the within-subject errors. A score test statistic for testing the existence of autocorrelation among the within-subject errors is derived. Moreover, we develop an explicit scoring procedure for the maximum likelihood estimation with standard errors as a by-product. The technique for predicting future responses of a subject given past measurements is also investigated. Results are illustrated with real data from a multiple sclerosis clinical trial. These motifs represent highly conserved regions and describe critical regions that may only exist on proteins that remain functional at high temperatures. This investigation presents a method for identifying and comparing corresponding mesophilic and thermophilic sequence motifs between protein families. Discriminative motifs that are conserved only in the mesophilic or thermophilic subfamily are identified. Analysis of the results shows that, although the subfamilies of most protein families share similar motifs, some discriminative motifs are present in particular thermophilic/mesophilic subfamilies. The thermophilic discriminative motifs are conserved only in thermophilic organisms, revealing that physiochemical principles support thermostability. This bidirectional configuration shares optical components in the fiber network and an interleaver is utilized to enable unidirectional amplification in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to block noise associated with Rayleigh backscattering. After bidirectional transmission through 500-km LEAF fibers in the recirculating loop, power penalties of less than 2.5 dB, were achieved at 10 Gb/s for all channels.Item type:Item, Modeling multizoned layer to improve light efficiency of organic light-emitting diode display(2006-05-01) ;Wei, AC ;Shieh, HPD ;光電工程學系 ;顯示科技研究所Department of PhotonicsA multizoned light-enhanced layer (MZ-LEL) superimposed on an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display has been demonstrated to increase the level of the light out-coupling efficiency in the normal direction. Such an MZ-LEL has a specific profile, which has been fabricated with sufficient accuracy. Simultaneously, this study has shown that by combining Fresnel's equation into an existing ray-tracing model, the level of accuracy in the construction of the model can be increased. Such a new model applied to a previous study has reduced the modeling deviation from 50 to 4%. It has been found that a 70 x 70 pixel OLED panel laminated with an array-patterned MZ-LEL (ALEL) exhibits a gain factor of 1.28. which is consistent with the simulated value of 1.32.Item type:Item, 10-Gb/s modulator drivers with local feedback networks(2006-05-01) ;Li, DU ;Tsai, CM ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsA novel intrinsic collector-base capacitance (C(CB)) feedback network (ICBCFN) was incorporated into the conventional cascode and series-connected voltage balancing (SCVB) circuit configurations to implement 10-Gb/s modulator drivers. The drivers fabricated in 0.35-mu m SiGe BiCMOS process could generate 9 V(PP) differential output swings with rise/fall time of less than 29 ps. Also, the ICBCFN was modified as an intrinsic drain-gate capacitance feedback network (IDGCFN) to implement drivers with differential output swing of 8 V(PP) in 0.18-mu m CMOS process. The power consumption is as low as 0.6 W. The present work shows that the driving capability is greater than that of the currently reported Silicon-based drivers.Item type:Item, Distribution and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species isolated from different age populations in Taiwan(2006-05-01) ;Yang, Yun-Liang ;Cheng, Hsiao-Hsu ;Lo, Hsiu-Jung ;生物科技學系Department of Biological Science and TechnologyA total of 3926 yeast isolates were isolated from 24 hospitals participating in the Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance of Yeasts (TSARY) from July to September 2002. Candida albicans (69.1%) was the most common species, followed by Candida tropicalis (12.9%), Candida glabrata (8.3%), Candida parapsilosis (2.7%), Candida krusei (0.6%), and others (6.4%). To study the distribution and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species according to sources and patient ages, we have collected and analyzed the clinical data of 861 isolates. Of those 861 isolates, urine was the most common source (40%) followed by sputum (22.1%), blood (13.5%), central venous catheter (5.5%), wound (5.2%), and others (13.7%). With increasing age, we observed a significant increase in the percentage of isolates from urine (P = 0.00005) and a parallel reduction from blood (P = 0.009). As expected, more elder patients were hospitalized than younger ones (P = 0.05). In total, 2.7% and 1.9% of isolates were resistant to amphotericin B and fluconazole, respectively. Antifungal susceptibilities of isolates from different age groups were not significantly different.Item type:Item, Asymmetric 2+1 pass stereo matching algorithm for real images(2006-05-01) ;Chu, C ;Chang, CC ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceAn asymmetric 2+1 pass stereo matching algorithm is proposed for generating a depth map from the input of two real stereo images. In the first pass, the Canny edge detector is used to acquire edge images from the inputs. Component images are then generated from the edge images. The edges of each component in the left component image are cut to obtain asymmetric left and right component images. The concept of a disparity-space image (DSI) by components is introduced and dynamic programming (DP) techniques are applied to match the asymmetric left and right component images. In the second pass, the previous DSI is modified, applying the DP methods to acquire the matched pixel pairs of the matched component pairs, and to generate ground control pairs (GCPs). In the final pass, these GCPs are incorporated into the DP algorithms to determine the optimal path and acquire the depth image. The results show that the proposed approach produces reliable and efficient matching and preserves the shapes of objects effectively for real stereo images. The proposed algorithm makes contours clearer than other conventional methods for real stereo images. We derive the maximum likelihood estimates of the mean arrival rate and the three unequal mean service rates for an M/M/3 queue with heterogeneous servers, and then extend the results to an M/M/R queue with heterogeneous servers. We also develop the confidence interval formula for the parameter rho, the probability of empty system P-0, and the expected number of customers in the system E[N], of an M/M/R queue with heterogeneous servers.Item type:Item, An all-optical 2R regenerator using a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode incorporated in a bidirectional EDFA(2006-05-01) ;Chien, HC ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn all-optical 2R regenerator, based on a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode with a 10-mm-long embedded fiber Bragg grating cavity, and a bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to execute all-optical 211 regeneration at 10 Gb/s. Compared with the conventional 111 regeneration, the proposed scheme has achieved significant 6.4-dB improvement of power penalty at bit-error ratio = 10(-9) in the transmission experiment over 100-km standard single-mode fiber. Item type:Item, Various analyses of specific heat for the order parameter of superconductor Na(0.35)coO(2) center dot 1.3H(2)O(2006-05-01) ;Sun, CP ;Lin, JY ;Kang, YC ;Huang, CLTakada, KLow-temperature specific-heat data C(T) of two Na0.35CoO2. 1.3H(2)O samples (I and II) with temperature T down to 0.6 K without and with magnetic field of 8T are presented. The normal-state linear coefficient of specific heat gamma(n) Debye temperature Theta D, superconducting transition temperature T-c, specific heat jump at T-c, Delta C/T-gamma ns(c). and superconducting volume of fraction (SVF) are 14.89 mJ/mol K-2, 503, 4.7 K, 1.96, and 26.6% for sample I and 13.94 mJ/mol K-2, 362, 4.5 K, 1.45. and 47.4% for sample II, respectively. Because the superconducting properties may depend on the water content of sample, it is found that the better quality (higher SVF) of sample, the nodal order parameter is better than BCS isotropic s-wave model in describing the gap function of this interesting compound Na0.35CoO2. 1.3H(2)O. One key element in producing good quality compressed audio particularly at medium and low rates is a high performance rate-distortion controller in the audio encoder. Although the trellis-based rate-distortion control algorithms previously proposed can achieve a praiseworthy performance, their computational complexity is extremely high. Therefore, for practical applications, it is very desirable to achieve a similar performance at a much lower complexity. Two types of techniques are proposed in this paper to reduce the computational burden of the trellis-based algorithms. One is splitting a very heavy calculation stage into two sequential steps with much less computation. The other is reducing the candidates in the trellis for parameter search. Together, when applicable, our approach achieves a similar coding performance (audio quality) but requires less than 1/1000 complexity in computation.Item type:Item, Decentralized Energy-Conserving and Coverage-Preserving Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks(2006-05-01) ;Huang, Chi-Fu ;Lo, Li-Chu ;Tseng, Yu-Chee ;Chen, Wen-Tsuen資訊工程學系In this article, we propose several decentralized protocols that schedule sensors' active and sleeping periods to prolong the network lifetime while maintain the sensing field sufficiently covered. The proposed protocols are based on a model similar to that of Yan et al. [ 2003], but improve its results in several senses. First, our approach can significantly reduce the computational complexity incurred, and at the same time achieve better accuracy in determining the coverage of the sensing area. Second, we extend the result such that it can support multilayer coverage of the sensing field. Third, we further enhance it [Yan et al. 2003] by proposing several optimization mechanisms to balance or reduce sensors' energy expenditure.Item type:Item, Aging influence of poly(ethylene glycol) suppressors of Cu electrolytes on gaps filling(2006-05-01) ;Liu, SH ;Li, TC ;Chen, C ;Shieh, JMDai, BTIn this study, we investigate how the degradation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) additives in Cu electroplating electrolytes influences the gaps filling of damascene features and the roughness of plated surfaces. The cleavage of PEG, whose reaction is enhanced by a high bias current and more plating cycles, not only diminishes the inhibition effect of the electrolytes, but also enables the formation of enormous complexes of short-chain PEG-Cu far from the reacting surfaces. Hence, the more plating cycles performed, the worse the gaps filling characteristic and the rougher the plated surfaces. Furthermore, an overshoot phenomenon on the transient cells voltage for PEG-containing electrolytes is observed and explained well by a dynamic equilibrium between PEG absorption ability and Cu reduction speed. Accordingly, the change in overshoot shape is closely related to PEG aging and this fact is employed to examine the reliability of electrolytes.Item type:Item, Learning heuristics for determining slurry wall panel lengths(2006-05-01) ;Dzeng, RJ ;Pan, NF ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringDetermining panel lengths for slurry walls is an engineering issue that involves complex geotechnical, design, and site considerations. In practice, the decision is made through a trial-and-error process. Relevant principles extracted from experts are not sufficiently detailed to generate a solution. This research proposes an inductive learning model for solving this problem. Given a new project whose panel lengths need to be determined, the model chooses similar cases from existing cases, based on case-based reasoning, performs an inductive learning, and uses correctness and coverage rates, and then static rules to verify the induced results. However, in practice, construction safety and schedule control are managed separately. This work develops an innovative simulation-based model, SimSAFE, that assesses the hazard (or expected accident costs) for each activity in a network schedule. Thus, at any time point, safety managers can pay considerable attention to activities (or paths or working zones) with high expected accident costs. Additionally, by breaking down the uncertainty of an accident cause occurring, SimSAFE provides factor-sensitivity information to support safety risk management. Enhancing knowledge of the safety factors (such as safety training and site environment) to which an activity (or path or zone) is sensitive, and also of the activities (or paths or zones) that are most sensitive to a particular factor can provide management with a better sense of what factors and activities (or paths or zones) need to be controlled for reducing construction accidents, especially for a large project or multiple projects. The goal is to maximize a Schur convex function F whose ith argument is the sum of numbers assigned to part i. The shape of a partition is the vector consisting of the sizes of its parts, further, a shape (without referring to a particular partition) is a vector of nonnegative integers (n(1),..., n(p)) which sum to n. A partition is called size-consecutive if there is a ranking of the parts which is consistent with their sizes, and all elements in a higher-ranked part exceed all elements in the lower-ranked part. We demonstrate that one can restrict attention to size-consecutive partitions with shapes that are nonmajorized, we study these shapes, bound their numbers and develop algorithms to enumerate them. Our study extends the analysis of a previous paper by Hwang and Rothblum which discussed the above problem assuming the existence of a majorizing shape.Item type:Item, New tectonics: a preliminary framework involving classic and digital thinking(2006-05-01) ;Liu, YT ;Lim, CK ;建築研究所Institude of ArchitectureThe digital tectonic studies noticed the dramatic change of traditional architectural construction in association with digital technology. A more systematic framework of new tectonics combining digital and classic elements and processes is needed to explore the digital theory in the architecture field. The first step of this case-study research is to determine both the analytical factors of classic tectonics and the digital cases. The next step discusses emergent digital factors of tectonics. The third step applies the four new, factors to the tectonic processes of five digital projects by well-known architects who have actual building experience in both predigital and digital it,works. Some phenomena of digital tectonics have emerged to reveal the dynamic factors of motion, information, generation and fabrication. In a preliminary framework of new tectonics, seven classic and four digital factors form a whole and interact with each other. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
