A manufacturing method of a polymer solar cell is illustrated. A substrate and a first conductive layer formed thereon are provided. An organic active semiconductor material and a functional organic material, which features modifying an interface between an organic layer and electrodes, are dissolved in an organic solvent to form a blend. The blend is deposited on the first conductive layer by solution process. The organic solvent is removed, such that the functional organic material and the organic active semiconductor material exhibit phase separation so as to form an organic modified layer on the top of the organic active semiconductor layer. A second conductive layer is deposited by thermal coating on the organic modified layer. Importantly, the organic modified layer formed by spontaneous phase separation effectively modifies the interface between the organic active semiconductor layer and a second conductive layer, thereby enhancing efficiency of an organic solar cell.
Effect of Thermoelectric Cooling in Nanoscale Junctions

We propose a thermoelectric cooling device based on an atomic-sized junction. Using first-principles approaches, we investigate the working conditions and the coefficient of performance (COP) of an atomic-scale electronic refrigerator where the effects of the phonon's thermal current and local heating are included. It is observed that the functioning of the thermoelectric nanorefrigerator is restricted to a narrow range of driving voltages. Compared with the bulk thermoelectric system with the overwhelmingly irreversible Joule heating, the 4-Al atomic refrigerator has a higher efficiency than a bulk thermoelectric refrigerator with the same thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) due to suppressed local heating via the quasi-ballistic electron transport and small driving voltages. Quantum nature due to the size minimization offered by atomic-level control of properties facilitates electron cooling beyond the expectation of the conventional thermoelectric device theory.

An image reconstruction method for diffuse optical tomography is implemented using a diffuse optical tomography system, and includes the steps of: a) activating one of optical detecting units of the diffuse optical tomography system to emit a near-infrared ray to illuminate a target for outputting a received light signal corresponding to one of a plurality of sub-frames of the tomographic image of the target; b) obtaining a light intensity matrix based upon the received light signal; c) obtaining an absorption coefficient matrix corresponding to the one of the sub-frames based upon a product of the light intensity matrix and an inverse matrix of a weight matrix; d) repeating steps a) to c) with activating another one of the optical detecting units until the absorption coefficient matrices corresponding respectively to the sub-frames are obtained; and e) reconstructing the tomographic image of the target based upon the absorption coefficient matrices.

We have developed a sensitive gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) amplification and magnetic separation method for the detection of oligonucleotide sequences. The assay relies on (i) the sandwich-type binding of two designed probe sequences that specifically recognize the target oligonucleotide sequences, (ii) magnetic bead separation, and (iii) AuNP-based ICP-MS amplification detection. To enhance the analytical signal and minimize the background signal resulting from nonspecific binding, we performed a series of experiments to evaluate the effects of various parameters (the concentration of the capture probe; the time required for hybridization; the number of washings required to eliminate nonspecific binding) on the oligonucleotide detection. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit was 80 zmol (corresponding to 1.6fM of the target sequence in a sample volume of 50 mu L). Moreover, it employs a shorter hybridization step and ICP-MS, this procedure is relatively simple and rapid (ca. 1.5 h). Based on the analytical results obtained using complementary and mismatched sequences, our method exhibits good performance in distinguishing complementary and random oligonucleotides. Compared with the "gold standard" methodology (plaque assay) for the quantification of dengue virus, our method has the capability to allow early detection of dengue virus in complicated and small-volume samples, with high specificity, good analytical sensitivity, and superior time-effectiveness. The No-Free-Lunch theorem states that there does not exist a genuine general-purpose optimizer because all algorithms have the identical performance on average over all functions. However, such a result does not imply that search heuristics or optimization algorithms are futile if we are more cautious with the applicability of these methods and the search space. In this paper, within the No-Free-Lunch framework, we firstly introduce the discrete Lipschitz class by transferring the Lipschitz functions, i.e., functions with bounded slope, as a measure to fulfill the notion of continuity in discrete functions. We then investigate the properties of the discrete Lipschitz class, generalize an algorithm called subthreshold-seeker for optimization, and show that the generalized subthreshold-seeker outperforms random search on this class. Finally, we propose a tractable sampling-test scheme to empirically demonstrate the superiority of the generalized subthreshold-seeker under practical configurations. This study concludes that there exist algorithms outperforming random search on the discrete Lipschitz class in both theoretical and practical aspects and indicates that the effectiveness of search heuristics may not be universal but still general in some broad sense.
