Item type:Item, Divergent Synthesis of 48 Heparan Sulfate-Based Disaccharides and Probing the Specific Sugar-Fibroblast Growth Factor-1 Interaction(2012-12-26) ;Hu, Yu-Peng ;Zhong, Yong-Qing ;Chen, Zhi-Geng ;Chen, Chun-YenShi, ZhonghaoSeveral biological processes involve glycans, yet understanding their ligand specificities is impeded by their inherent diversity and difficult acquisition. Generating broad synthetic sugar libraries for bioevaluations is a powerful tool in unraveling glycan structural information. In the case of the widely distributed heparan sulfate (HS), however, the 48 theoretical possibilities for its repeating disaccharide call for synthetic approaches that should minimize the effort in an undoubtedly huge undertaking. Here we employed a divergent strategy to afford all 48 HS-based disaccharides from just two orthogonally protected disaccharide precursors. Different combinations and sequence of transformation steps were applied with many downstream intermediates leading up to multiple target products. With the full disaccharide library in hand, affinity screening with fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) revealed that four of the synthetic sugars bind to FGF-1. The molecular details of the interaction were further clarified through X-ray analysis of the sugar-protein cocrystals. The capability of comprehensive sugar libraries in providing key insights in glycan-ligand interaction is, thus, highlighted.Item type:Item, Numerical study of viscosity and inertial effects on tank-treading and tumbling motions of vesicles under shear flow(2012-12-26) ;Kim, Yongsam ;Lai, Ming-Chih ;應用數學系 ;數學建模與科學計算所(含中心)Department of Applied MathematicsAn inextensible vesicle under shear flow experiences a tank-treading motion on its membrane if the viscosity contrast between the interior and exterior fluids is small. Above a critical threshold of viscosity contrast, the vesicle undergoes a tumbling bifurcation. In this paper, we extend our previous work [Kim and Lai, J. Comput. Phys. 229, 4840 (2010)] to the case of different viscosity and investigate the transition between the tank-treading and tumbling motions in detail. The present numerical results are in a good agreement with other numerical and theoretical studies qualitatively. In addition, we study the inertial effect on this transition and find that the inertial effect might inhibit the tumbling motion in favor of the tank-treading motion, which is observed recently in the literature. The critical viscosity contrast for the transition to the tumbling motion usually increases as the reduced area increases in the Stokes regime. However, we surprisingly observe that the critical viscosity contrast decreases as the reduced area increases to some point in the flow of slightly higher Reynolds number. Our numerical result also shows that the inertial effect has stronger inhibition to tumbling motion when the reduced area is small. The stacking arrangement and the misorientation angle of each sample are determined by Raman spectroscopy. The chemical potential of each sample is measured using ultrafast midinfrared pump-probe spectroscopy to be 63 or 64 meV for all samples. The intraband scattering rate can be obtained by fitting the measured data with theoretical models. Other physical parameters, including carrier density, dc conductivity, and carrier mobility, of each sample can also be deduced from the theoretical fitting. The fitting results show the existence of misoriented or AA-stacked layers with an interaction energy of alpha(1) = 217 meV in our multilayer samples. Here we show that the scattering rate strongly depends on the stacking arrangement of the sample. High scattering rates and high optical conductivity are associated with AA-stacked samples, while lower ones are associated with misoriented multilayer graphene. This implies that the THz optoelectronic properties of multilayer graphene can be tuned by purposefully misorienting layers or employing different stacking schemes. The peers are configured to store indexes of a key and to share the same loading (i.e., indexes) of the key to the peers with same secondary identities in different zones. The secondary identity is derived and has a modulo relationship with a first identity of the peer. The threshold indicates maximum number of indexes stored in each peer. Therefore, the loading are distributed evenly to peers in different zones, which achieves load balance to a decentralized structured peer-to-peer network.Item type:Item, SOLAR CELL AND FABRICATION METHOD THEREOF(2012-12-27) ;Meng Hsin-Fei ;Zan Hsiao-Wen ;Horng Sheng-Fu ;Chao Yu-ChiangLin Yuan-PaiA solar cell is provided that an extremely thin light absorber is formed between a n-type semiconductor layer and a p-type semiconductor layer such that the light absorber is used to absorb solar energy, while the p-type semiconductor layer may not absorb light. J. ;Lai, S. K.物理研究所This paper studies the melting behavior of Ag-14 cluster employing the instantaneous normal mode (INM) analysis that was previously developed for bimetallic cluster Ag17Cu2. The isothermal Brownian-type molecular dynamics simulation is used to generate atom configurations of Ag-14 at different temperatures up to 1500 K. At each temperature, these atomic configurations are then analyzed by the INM technique. To delve into the melting behavior of Ag-14 cluster which differs from Ag17Cu2 by the occurrence of an anomalous prepeak in the specific heat curve in addition to the typical principal peak, we appeal to examining the order parameter tau(T) defined in the context of the INM method. Two general approaches are proposed to calculate tau(T). In one, tau(T) is defined in terms of the INM vibrational density of states; in another, tau(T) is defined considering the cluster as a rigid body with its rotational motions described by three orthogonal eigenvectors. Our results for Ag-14 by these two methods indicate the mutual agreement of tau(T) calculated and also the consistent interpretation of the melting behavior with the specific heat data. The order parameter tau(T) provides in addition an insightful interpretation between the melting of clusters and the concept of broken symmetry which has been found successful in studies of the melting transition of bulk systems. We demonstrate that a strong reshaping of the initial pulse profile drastically affects the Stokes wave and therefore represents an important limitation in CARS experiment. In particular, we emphasize the saturation effect of the peak power of the Stokes wave resulting from supercontinuum generation. However, we show that this type of compact system can be particularly suitable for achieving CARS measurement. The existing applications have undertaken with the price and the location factors in mind. They show the same results regardless the personal special needs of consumers. The realization of the next generation of personalized systems will be a challenging task. For our research purpose, the personal special needs are defined as: (Religions, Cultures, Allergies, Health Condition, Diet, Preferences and Dislikes) needs that affect many aspects of a consumer life. In general there is no shortage of the restaurant apps available in the App_Store, However, many of these apps are based on regular factors such as price and location. They are not a great choice for consumers with personal special needs. This paper proposes a novel "Personalized Mobile Restaurant" PMR system. To meet the strict needs of consumers; a requirement driven design approach was followed. The proposed system was tested successfully and promising results were obtained.Item type:Item, Batteryless 275mV Startup Single-Cell Photovoltaic Energy Harvesting System for Alleviating Shading Effect(2013-01-01) ;Huang, Chao-Jen ;Su, Yi-Ping ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;Huang, Li-RenChu, Fang-Chihwithout any batteries, a low input voltage converter is presented for a single-cell (SC) photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting to alleviate the energy degradation due to shading effect. Since EEG signals are very feeble, they are easy to be contaminated by artifacts. Among all artifacts, eye blink artifact dose the most significant harm to EEG signals. For acquiring artifact free EEG signals, ICA is a popular method for artifacts extraction. After extraction of ICA, eye blink artifacts are rejected to improve the reliability of EEG applications such as brain computer interfaces (BCIs). To promote the feasibility and convenience of BCIs, a real-time ICA algorithm, ORICA, is adopted in this system. With ORICA, the system immediately finishes each ICA result after each sample time. After each ICA result is generated, the automatic eye blink artifact rejection and inverse ICA are performed to acquire eye blink artifact free EEG signals in real-time. For system portability and high integration, a front-end interface of commercial IC, ADS1298 provided by TI, and Bluetooth interface, UART, are implemented. The system is designed used TSMC 90nm CMOS technology with 8 channels EEG processing in 128 Hz sample rate of raw data and consumes 8.56 mW at 50 MHz clock rate. The design methods of the proposed EEG system are provided in this paper. The performance and processing results of the system are also shown to reach 0.2532 s latency after each EEG sample time. Item type:Item, Miniaturized Dual-Band Composite Right/Left-Handed Crossover(2013) ;Hsieh, Sheng-Yu ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, an arbitrary dual-band and miniaturized crossover is proposed using the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission structures. The proposed crossover is based on the two-section CRLH branch lines of three different characteristic impedances where one degree of design freedom can be used for implementation convenience. Combining the CRLH implementation approach with the even-and odd-mode analysis results, a simple design procedure is developed. To support our idea, a dual-band crossover operating at 0.9 GHz and 2.45 GHz was fabricated and tested. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated data. Compared to the reported dual-band crossovers based on the printed-circuit-board (PCB) technology, our presented crossover shows a significant size reduction by about 59% with respect to the smallest footprint found in the literature. Item type:Item, The Analysis of Nano-Patterned Sapphire Substrates-Induced Compressive Strain to Enhance Quantum-Confined Stark Effect of InGaN-Based Light-Emitting Diodes(2013-01-01) ;Chen, Po-Hsun ;Su, Vincent ;You, Yao-Hong ;Lee, Ming-LunHsieh, Cheng-JuThis paper demonstrates that the quantum-confined stark effect of InGaN-based light-emitting diodes can be enhanced by the means of using the hexagonal nano-post patterned sapphire substrates based on the increase of the post-duty cycle.Item type:Item, Formation of size-tunable dandelion-like hierarchical rutile titania nanospheres for dye-sensitized solar cells(2013) ;Lan, Chi-Ming ;Liu, Shang-En ;Shiu, Jia-Wei ;Hu, Jyun-YuLin, Meng-HungA sol-gel method with a modified solvent comprising of three simple steps under low-temperature conditions was used to synthesize mono-disperse rutile TiO2 nanospheres with dandelion-like hierarchical morphology (DHRS) as a light-scattering layer for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). 1,2-Ethanediol (ED) served as a key retardation agent in the second step at 25 degrees C to slow the hydrolysis and condensation of the TiCl4 aqueous solution prepared in the first step at 0 degrees C; the subsequent nucleation of a rutile type phase occurred homogeneously in the third step at 70 degrees C to generate the rutile TiO2 nanospheres with highly uniform sizes. The spherical sizes of DHRS were well controlled with the volume ratios of the ED-water solvent mixture in the second step, for which the DHRS of diameter 650-200 nm were produced from the solvent system containing 5-25% ED. A detailed mechanism is presented to rationalize the formation of nanospheres of uniform size in six steps: 1) hydration and hydrolysis, 2) hydrolysis and retardation, 3) hydrolysis and condensation, 4) homogeneous nucleation, 5) aggregation and growth of rod-like crystals and 6) DHRS formation. The DSSC device with a scattering layer made of DHRS (size similar to 300 nm) performed comparably to that with a scattering layer made of a commercially available TiO2 paste, making this nano-material a cost-effective alternative for future DSSC commercialization.Item type:Item, A Fully Integrated 8-Channel Closed-Loop Neural-Prosthetic SoC for Real-Time Epileptic Seizure Control(2013-01-01) ;Chen, Wei-Ming ;Chiueh, Herming ;Chen, Tsan-Jieh ;Ho, Chia-LunJeng, ChiItem type:Item, Process-Variation-Aware Iddq Diagnosis for Nano-Scale CMOS Designs - The First Step(2013-01-01) ;Chang, Chia-Ling (Lynn) ;Wen, Charles H. -P ;Bhadra, Jayanta ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringAlong with the shrinking CMOS process and rapid design scaling, both Iddq values and their variation of chips increase. As a result, the defect leakages become less significant when compared to the full-chip currents, making them more in-distinguishable for traditional Iddq diagnosis. Therefore, in this paper, a new approach called s-Iddq diagnosis is proposed for reinterpreting original data and diagnosing failing chips, intelligently. The overall flow consists of two key components, (1) s-Iddq transformation and (2) defect-syndrome matching: s-Iddq transformation first manifests defect leakages by excluding both the process-variation and design-scaling impacts. Later, defect-syndrome matching applies data mining with a pre-built library to identify types and locations of defects on the fly. Experimental results show that an average of 93.68% accuracy with a resolution of 1.75 defect suspects can be achieved on ISCAS'89 and IWLS'05 benchmark circuits using a 45nm technology, demonstrating the effectiveness of s-Iddq diagnosis.
