Fuel consumption constitutes 20-30% of the operation cost of most bus companies. Consequently, reducing fuel consumption decreases operating costs and carbon emissions. Most previous studies adopted experimental methods to collect and analyze small data and focused on the influence of a single variable on fuel consumption. Therefore, the analytical results may not have appropriately reflected the operation requirements of the bus companies. Hence, this study obtains big data comprising of Telematics and operation records from an urban bus company and selects the relevant data according to several eco-driving aspects such as driving behavior, vehicle characteristics, driver characteristics, and weather. Subsequently, a decision tree, C5.0, is adopted to explore the relevant correspondence between variables that affect fuel consumption. Observing the analytical results, the variables of bus brand, bus age, bus weight, monthly passenger load, monthly salary, monthly working days, monthly overtime, and times of high-speed have relatively high influence on fuel consumption. Based on the results, therefore, several eco-driving recommendations of fuel consumption reduction are proposed. For the case of bus purchase, the urban bus company can cautiously consider bus brand, bus age, and bus weight. The company can also provide a friendly working environment with the reasonable monthly passenger load, monthly salary, working days in a month, and overtime to reduce the times of high-speed such that the fuel efficiency can be improved.

This study highlights transportation service quality (including that of the core transportation service and the physical environment of transportation) and investigates its impact on satisfaction as well as attitude toward and image of a sustainable city. Additionally, this study also addresses the mediating role of satisfaction in the relationships between transportation service quality, and both attitude toward and image of a sustainable city, as well as the moderating role of involvement in the links between satisfaction and this attitude and between satisfaction and this image. The findings confirm that both core transportation service and the physical environment of transportation significantly and positively influence satisfaction and, in turn, significantly and positively influence attitude toward and image of a sustainable city. Satisfaction also plays a mediating role in the links between transportation service quality and this attitude and image. In addition, the effect of satisfaction on attitude toward and image of a sustainable city becomes greater as the level of involvement increases.

The implementation of National Health Insurance in Taiwan has affected the medical industry by significantly depleting the supply chain's profits. Service providers in the medical industry must meet the dual-service expectation of serving as medical manufacturers with upper reaches and as suppliers in the downstream marketing channel. As a result, service providers must anticipate customer requirements, offer new service items that align with customer demands and improve the quality of existing services. This study aims to examine consumer perspectives about service satisfaction in the domestic medical industry using Kano's two-dimensional model. In addition, it employs the importance-satisfaction model to determine service items that need improvement. The empirical findings show that consumer perceptions about service quality attributes vary and thus, service items may be categorized differently in Kano's model. Further, the reliability of service quality significantly affects customer satisfaction. Thus, service providers can gain a competitive edge and maintain their market position by offering high value added and critical quality attributes. Finally, analyzing customer attitudes toward new service items for indifference quality will help service providers determine effective tactics in a competitive market. In general, service providers should assign higher priority to items that customers consider in need of improvement.

Class imbalance is a common problem in classification problems. The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) has been shown to be robust in addressing class imbalance problems owing to its inherent properties of classification model construction. The bagging learning approach often has been applied as a superior strategy to reduce the learning bias of classification algorithms. In this study, we propose MTSbag, which integrates the MTS and the bagging-based ensemble learning approaches to enhance the ability of conventional MTS in handling imbalanced data. We perform numerical experiments involving multiple datasets with various class imbalance levels to demonstrate the effectiveness of MTSbag, especially for datasets with high imbalance levels.

Purpose Leisure and tourism activities have proliferated and become important parts of modern life, and the hotel industry plays a necessary role in the supply for and demand from consumers. The purpose of this paper is to develop guidelines for hotel service development by applying a service development approach integrating Kansei engineering and text mining. Design/methodology/approach The online reviews represent the voice of customers regarding the products and services. Consumers' online comments might become a key factor for consumers choosing hotels when planning their tourism itinerary. With the framework of Kansei engineering, this paper adopts text mining to extract the sets of Kansei words and hotel service characteristics from the online contents as well as the relationships among Kansei words, service characteristics and these two sets. The relationships are generated by using link analysis, and then the guidelines for hotel service development are proposed based on the obtained relationships. Findings The results of the present research can provide the hotel industry a comprehensive understanding of hotels' customers opinions, and can offer specific advice on how to differentiate one's products and services from competitors' in order to improve customer satisfaction and increase hotels' performance in the end. Finally, this study finds out the service development guidelines to meet customers' requirements which can provide suggestions for hotel managers. The implications both for academic and industry are also drawn based on the obtained results. Originality/value Now, in the internet era, consumers can comment on their hotel living experience directly through the internet. The large amount of user-generated content (UGC) provided by consumers also provides chances for the hospitality industry to understand consumers' opinions through online review mining. The UGC with consumers' opinions to hotel services can be continuously collected and analyzed by hoteliers. Therefore, this paper demonstrates how to apply the hybrid approach integrating Kansei engineering and online review mining to hotel service development.

This study explores the differential impacts of guanxi and relationship marketing, both at the interpersonal and interorganisational level, within the port logistics industry. We compare the effects of these two marketing approaches on outcome variables to elucidate managerial implications for logistics firms conducting cross-cultural business. The PLS-SEM method is used to analyse data from a survey of logistics companies in Taiwan and Panama. In both countries, interpersonal relationships engender significant effects on interorganisational relationships, and firm performance has significant effects on firm loyalty. As regards the determinants of supply-chain effectiveness and firm performance, we show that interpersonal relationships play a more important role in Taiwan, while interorganisational relationships have more weight in Panama. In other words, Asian companies focus on guanxi marketing at the personal level, while Latin American ones focus on relationship marketing at the interorganisational level. These findings and consequent knowledge can help companies conducting business in Asia and Latin America to adapt to counterpart's cultural business practices.

This paper aims to investigate whether customers' perceptions of the quality and brand equity of a branded website affect purchase intentions, and to explore the mediating effects of trust and perceived risk in this relationship. Links between purchase intention and both trust and perceived risk, moderated by electronic word of mouth (eWOM), are also examined. A research model for testing relationships among these constructs based on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework is outlined. A statistical analysis of the collected questionnaires was computed from the website of a target chain restaurant in Taiwan (T.G.I. Friday's). Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine the hypothesised relationships among the variables. The findings confirm that potential customers' perceptions of both the quality and brand equity of a branded website affect their trust and perceived risk, and, in turn, their purchase intentions. This study also reveals the existence of a moderating effect of eWOM on the links between both trust and perceived risk and purchase intentions. Based on the findings, the implications are discussed, and directions for future research are highlighted.

For temperature sensitive and perishable products (TSPPs) logistics, a special type of supply chain management called Cold Chain Management (CCM), has been established. Temperature monitoring and control are essential mechanisms in CCM, because they are necessary for maintaining food safety and quality. However, they are costly to logistics service providers (LSPs). In this paper, a logistics service model based on the advancement of the Multi-Temperature joint Distribution System, namely MTJD, is being proposed for the food cold chain. The proposed service model facilitates innovation in logistics services and gives the logistics sector a competitive advantage in the area of thermal protection for perishable shipments and temperature sensitive products. Smaller shipments and timely deliveries offer unique challenges when operating a cold chain. The MTJD-based model is designed with these challenges in mind. A case study is performed by using the regulative cycle. In this paper, an MTJD-based model is presented according to the requirements of the food chain and the operations of a 3PL in Taiwan. MTJD provides a new scheme for continuously temperature-controlled logistics, which can jointly deliver and store multi-temperature goods. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
