Item type:Item, A low power design on diffusive interconnection large-neighborhood cellular nonlinear network for giga-scale system application(2004-01-01) ;Chen, SH ;Wu, CY ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringIn this paper, the diffusive interconnection large neighborhood cellular nonlinear network (LN-CNN) with low power dissipation and small chip area is proposed and analyzed. In the proposed new architecture, the number of gain blocks can be reduced by merging template A model and template B model together with suitable adjustment. All the gain blocks are based on simple current-mirror circuits so the cell has small chip area and save more power. Thus the new architecture and circuits are suitable for large array LN-CNN implementation for giga-scale system applications. The functions of LN-CNN are verified by HSPICE simulation and the LN-CNN chip will be fabricated to verify the simulation results.Item type:Item, A new structure of large-neighborhood cellular nonlinear network (LN-CNN)(2003-01-01) ;Cheng, CH ;Chen, SH ;Lin, LJ ;Huang, KHWu, CYIn this paper, a novel Large-Neighborhood Cellular Nonlinear Network (LN-CNN) structure is proposed and analyzed. The proposed LN-CNN structure can realize both A and B templates with more than two neighborhood layers without complex direct connections between neural cell and neighboring cells. In both A and B templates, the first layer is defined by 4 neighboring cells located at the 4 corners of a diamond shape whereas the second layer is defined by 8 cells. In realizing the 12 template coefficients of a template, only 8 connections are required as compared to 12 connections in the conventional CNN structure. Thus the required chip area for synaptic connection can be reduced. Using the proposed LN-CNN structure, the LN-CNN functions, such as noise removing, Muller-Layer arrowhead illusion, and connected component detection, have been successfully realized and verified in MATLAB simulations. The constraints on the realized templates and the template coefficients in the third or higher layers are analyzed and discussed. Based upon he above successful simulation results, the application of the proposed LN-CNN structure to the design of LN-CNN Universal Machine (LN-CNNUM) is quite feasible. The related research will be conducted in the future.Item type:Item, Suppression of the hysteresis in a homeotropic aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal film(1997-04-01) ;Chen, CY ;Chen, SH ;光電工程研究所Institute of EO EnginerringWe investigated electro-optical effects in a homeotropic-aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal film. Hysteresis was observed in this cell. The width of the hysteresis could be suppressed by appropriate adjustment of external parameters in the experiment and the unwinding electric Geld could be reduced by rubbing of the substrate. The rewinding electric field could Le increased by making the cell thicker.Item type:Item, Effects of dichroic dye in UV-cured polymer dispersed liquid crystal films(1996-05-01) ;Wu, JJ ;Wang, CM ;Chen, SH ;光電工程研究所Institute of EO EnginerringWe study the effects of dichroic dye in ''ultraviolet'' polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. Experimental data show that for a dye-doped PDLC film the absorption coefficient for He-Ne laser light is different from that for UV light. Transmittance of a PDLC film changes when the UV curing intensity or dye concentration is varied. It is found that under UV the illumination with a constant intensity the dye concentration can be optimized to obtain minimum transmittance and to improve the contrast ratio. Correspondingly, for a fixed dye concentration the UV curing intensity can be optimized to obtain a minimum transmittance. The experimental results can be described by a theory based on Beer's law. Besides, the experimental results show that the curing temperature is an important factor that affects the nematic liquid crystal droplet size in the UV curing process.Item type:Item, An RNN-based preclassification method for fast continuous Mandarin speech recognition(1998-01-01) ;Chen, SH ;Liao, YF ;Chiang, SM ;Chang, SG電信工程研究所A novel recurrent neural network-based (RNN-based) front-end preclassification scheme for fast continuous Mandarin speech recognition is proposed in this paper, First, an RNN is employed to discriminate each input frame for the three broad classes of initial, final, and silence, A finite state machine (FSM) is then used to classify the input frame into four states including three stable states of Initial (I), Final (F), and Silence (S), and a Transient (T) state, The decision is made based on examining whether the RNN discriminates well between classes, We then restrict the search space for the three stable states in the following DP search to speed up the recognition process, Efficiency of the proposed scheme was examined by simulations in which we incorporate it with a hidden Markov model-based (HMM-based) continuous 411 Mandarin base-syllables recognizer, Experimental results showed that it can be used in conjunction with the beam search to greatly reduce the computational complexity of the HMM recognizer while keeping the recognition rate almost undegraded.Item type:Item, The synthesis and characterization of phosphorus-doped diamond films using trimethyl-phosphite as a doping source(1996-05-01) ;Chen, CF ;Lo, SF ;Chen, SH ;材料科學與工程學系Department of Materials Science and EngineeringProducing impurity-doped diamond films is a critical task for modern electronic applications. In this study, the effects of phosphorus in the gas phase on the morphological features of polycrystalline diamond films were investigated. The diamond films were prepared on n-type Si(100) substrates by the microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition. A trimethyl-phosphite vapour was introduced to the CH4-CO2 gas mixture as a dopant source. Surface morphology changed from well-defined facets to ball-like features by increasing the dopant concentration in the gas phase. Phosphorus-doped diamond films of good quality and well defined facets could be obtained by reducing the carbon concentration of reactant gases. This reduction could be achieved by decreasing the CH4 flow rates during the deposition process. An increase in the the dopant source caused the growth rate to become lower, the nucleation density to reduce drastically, and the relative intensity of XRD characteristic (110) peak to increase significantly.Item type:Item, Electrooptical properties of an aligned phase-change guest-host mode liquid crystal display(1998-12-01) ;Wu, JJ ;Lee, TY ;Chen, SH ;Kuo, CL光電工程研究所We have studied the electrooptical properties of an aligned phase-change guest-host (PCGH) mode liquid crystal display. Samples with various thickness-to-natural pitch ratios d/p(0) are fabricated. For each d/p(0), we measure the phase transition fields, the ON- and OFF-state transmittances and the response times. The phase transition fields are compared to the numerical values calculated from theory, In addition, it is found that when d/p(0) greater than or equal to 1.2 the d/p(0) ratio hardly affects the transmittances but does affect the response times of the sample film. The experimental result also demonstrates that the response times and the phase transition voltages are affected by the rubbing condition.Item type:Item, Novel diffraction phenomenon with the first order Fredericksz transition in a nematic liquid crystal film(1998-02-01) ;Chen, SH ;Fan, JY ;Wu, JJ ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe present the experimental results of the Ar+ laser- and electric-field-induced diffraction effect in a planar-parallel-aligned nematic liquid crystal film. It is found that only one set of diffraction rings occurs in the second order Fredericksz transition; however, two sets of diffraction rings can occur in the first order Fredericksz transition. The appearance of two sets of rings distinguishes the first order Fredericksz transition from the second order. We propose a theoretical explanation for the phenomenon. A theoretical model based on the continuum theory of liquid crystals and optical theory of degenerate four-wave mixing is developed to explain the observed phenomena. This conic-CCLC cell has been successfully manufactured and inquired. This display has a superwide viewing angle of over +/- 70 degrees in both the horizontal and vertical directions under the condition of no gray-scale inversion. The enhancement of viewing angle is believed to result from the director symmetric alignment in the conic-CCLC. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
