Item type:Item, Multiple soliton interactions in a polarization-division multiplexing system(1998-02-01) ;Chi, S ;Chen, CF ;Dung, JC ;光電工程研究所Institute of EO EnginerringWe numerically study multiple soliton interactions in a polarization-division multiplexing transmission system. It is found that, unlike the transmission system of solitons with the same polarization, the two soliton interaction is not the strongest compared to the interaction of more than two solitons. Therefore, the maximum transmission distance limited by the interaction of solitons cannot be inferred by the collision distance of two solitons in a polarization-division multiplexing system and the interactions of more solitons must be considered. The fabrication begins with a multimode fiber soldered in a U-groove with 5 mu m tolerance. Then the laser chip with a junction-up die-bond is passively aligned to a multimode fiber and converted into a singlemode fiber. The tolerance as measured for the multimode fiber at 10% loss of maximum coupling from the laser diode is 11 mu m. Because the tolerance of the multimode fiber from the laser chip is larger (11 mu m) than that of the fiber in the U-groove (5 mu m), this passive alignment is easily obtained. In contrast to other passive-alignment techniques, the advantages of this technique are that it is less sensitive to transverse misalignment and requires no complicated alignment marks. From laser to multimode fiber a coupling efficiency of greater than 80% and a bandwidth of greater than 1 GHz have been achieved. In this package, the overall coupling efficiency from laser to singlemode fiber is 16%, The resulting laser module with compact size and fewer components should make it highly suitable for use in low-cost telecommunication applications, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. A high output power of 8.7 dBm and a signal-to-noise-floor ratio of 43 dB were demonstrated. This fiber grating ring laser is used as the light source for the 2.488 Gb/s transmission experiment through a 100 km single mode fiber. To our knowledge, this is the first time a fiber grating ring laser is being used as an externally modulated source for digital transmission. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. A three channel hybrid system with one 10-Gb/s and two 2.5-Gb/s channels is also demonstrated in the 1550-nm region for transmission over 150 km of dispersion-shifted fiber, Negligible power penalty due to back reflection was observed.Item type:Item, Widely wavelength-tunable pulse generation from an actively mode-locked fiber laser with a Fabry-Perot laser diode(2006-01-01) ;Peng, PC ;Lin, JH ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn actively mode-locked fiber ring laser for generating wavelength-tunable optical pulses is demonstrated. An Er-Yb doped waveguide amplifier is used as an optical amplifier, and a Fabry-Perot laser diode is used as a modulator in the fiber laser. Moreover, we add a variable optical delay line to control the cavity length for maintaining a constant repetition frequency and pulsewidth at different wavelengths. The optical side-mode-suppression-ratio is better than 33.5 dB over the wavelength-tunable range of 46 nm.Item type:Item, Improving the soliton transmission by optical phase conjugation in a polarization-division multiplexing system(1999) ;Chen, CF ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsUndoing the soliton interaction by optical phase conjugation in a polarization-division multiplexing is numerically studied. It is shown that the soliton interaction can be undone well when the conjugator is applied before there are significant changes in the pulse shape. We have also found that, when the optical phase conjugation is used, the timing jitter of the solitons can be effectively reduced and the allowed transmission distance will increase.Item type:Item, A new process technique for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor [CMOS] compatible sensors(2001) ;Sheen, CS ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new sacrificial-etching-window (SEW) structure is reported for the first time, which can be used for most complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible sensor structures. Using a buried sacrificial layer, the etching windows of the substrate can be extended beneath the membrane. The SEW technique combines the advantages of both surface micromachining by using a sacrificial layer structure and bulk micromachining by anisotropic etching of a silicon substrate. Using the SEW structure, one can speed up the etching rate and design a larger membrane with a larger active area. Several sensors are fabricated by 1.2 mum industrial CMOS IC technologies combined with subsequent anisotropic front-side etching stops. Three kinds of SEW thermoelectric sensors are reported in this paper, and the characteristics of the sensors are analyzed and measured.Item type:Item, Numerical investigation of a self-induced transparency soliton in a nonlinear photonic bandgap structure doped uniformly with two-level atoms(2003-09-01) ;Luo, B ;Tseng, HY ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe numerically study the characteristics of a nonlinear pulse that propagates through a one-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) structure uniformly doped with two-level atoms. The numerical model adopted is the coupled system of nonlinear coupled-mode equations and atomic Bloch equations. The simulation results show that a self-induced transparency (SIT) soliton and a gap soliton can coexist in a nonlinear PBG structure uniformly doped with resonant atoms. Although this mixed state, known as a SIT-gap soliton, near the PBG edge has been theoretically predicted, we numerically show that such a solitary wave still exists even if its central frequency is located deep inside the PBG. The propagating characteristics of the SIT-gap soliton are also discussed. The result of the simulation indicates that a solitary wave can exist in such a medium.. However, the pulse shape of the dissipative soliton is asymmetrical because of the gain saturation effect. This gain saturation effect results from the high power of the ultrashort dissipative soliton. The influence of amplifier gain on the solitary wave is also investigated. With a dispersive polysiloxane polymer overlay on a side-polished single-mode fiber, an in-line tunable fiber short-pass filter with a tuning range of similar to400 nm (1250-1650 nm) and a temperature variation of 15 degreesC was demonstrated. The rejection efficiency was greater than 50 dB, whereas the insertion and polarization-dependent losses were below 0.26 and 0.09 dB, respectively. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.
