Template wetting methods have been broadly applied to fabricate diverse one-dimensional polymer nanomaterials. The currently used template wetting methods, however, have shortcomings and disadvantages such as long processing times, thermal degradation, and difficulties in controlling the lengths. In this work, we develop a novel microwave-annealing-induced nanowetting (MAIN) method to fabricate one-dimensional polymer nanomaterials using porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Upon microwave annealing, the polymer chains are infiltrated into the nanopores of the AAO templates, and the morphologies of the polymer nanomaterials can be controlled by the annealing conditions. The growth rates of the polymer nanomaterials using the MAIN method are faster than those using the traditional thermal annealing method. This work not only provides a time-saving method to fabricate one-dimensional polymer nanomaterials with controlled morphologies, but also offers a better understanding of the effect of microwave annealing on the wetting behaviors of polymer melts.

We develop a novel route based on the solution wetting method using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates to fabricate hierarchical hybrid nanostructures assembled from polystyrene-encapsulated gold nanoparticles (Au@PS NPs). Hybrid nanostructures including nanotubes and nanospheres can be reliably prepared, in which the spatial arrangement of the Au@PS NPs is determined by the pore diameters of the templates and the molecular weights of the thiol-ended polystyrene (PS-SH) ligands. In particular, the Rayleigh-instability-driven transformation plays a key role in the formation of the hybrid nanospheres.

In this work, we demonstrate multilayer aqueous systems as media to separate gold nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes. The multilayer aqueous systems are composed of CTAB/EG solutions with different viscosities. By centrifugation, gold nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes can be dispersed in different layers of the aqueous systems. Gold nanorods synthesized by different conditions, such as changing the amount of AgNO3 or different aging times, are used to examine the multilayer aqueous systems. Gold nanorods with higher aspect ratios can be obtained by increasing the concentration of AgNO3, as confirmed by UV-Vis spectra and TEM studies. The separated gold nanorods are also characterized by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), showing lower activity for gold nanorods with higher aspect ratios, due to the size-dependent absorption of the longitudinal plasmon band. The multilayer aqueous systems can effectively separate gold nanorods prepared by different conditions and can be applied to separate other types of nanoparticles.

Electrical and thermal conductivity measurements were conducted by using microfabricated four-point probe and T-type nanosensors in a vacuum on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) single nanowires prepared by the whisker method. The nanowires had a cross-section of only 5 nm x 15 nm and a length of 0.5-10 mu m. The electrical conductance of nanowires was 3.3 x 10(-7) 1/Omega and remained stable even after exposing the wires to ambient conditions for a few days. The thermal conductivity of a nanowire was 0.055 +/- 0.003 Wm(-1) K-1 which was approximately an order of magnitude lower than other previously reported P3HT single nanowires with a diameter of 120 nm and embedded in anodic aluminum oxide matrix. This thermal conductivity was also approximately four times smaller than that of P3HT amorphous thin films (similar to 0.2 W m(-1) K-1). The exceptionally low thermal conductivity was attributed to increased interface-phonon scattering because heat propagation was confined to an extreme narrow spatial dimension.

Electrospinning is one of the most common methods to prepare polymer fibers with sizes ranging from several nanometers to hundreds of micrometers. In most studies of electrospun polymer fibers, the properties and morphologies of polymer fibers are controlled by changing the electrospinning conditions. Few studies focus on the post-treatments of polymer fibers, which are critical for many fiber-based applications. In this work, we investigate the morphology transformation of electrospun polystyrene (PS) fibers annealed on top of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film-coated glass substrates. In situ optical microscopy and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy are used to observe the transformation process, which is driven by the Rayleigh instability, the surface tensions, and the interfacial tensions of polymers. Depending on the thickness of the underlying PMMA films, the electrospun PS fibers may transform into hemispheres or disks. The growth rates of the undulating amplitude are also affected by the film thickness.

Block copolymers have been extensively studied over the last few decades because they can self-assemble into well-ordered nanoscale structures. The morphologies of block copolymers in confined geometries, however, are still not fully understood. In this work, the fabrication and morphologies of three-dimensional polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) nanostructures confined in the nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates are studied. It is discovered that the block copolymers can wet the nanopores using a novel solvent-annealing-induced nanowetting in templates (SAINT) method. The unique advantage of this method is that the problem of thermal degradation can be avoided. In addition, the morphologies of PS-b -PDMS nanostructures can be controlled by changing the wetting conditions. Different solvents are used as the annealing solvent, including toluene, hexane, and a co-solvent of toluene and hexane. When the block copolymer wets the nanopores in toluene vapors, a perpendicular morphology is observed. When the block copolymer wets the nanopores in co-solvent vapors (toluene/hexane = 3:2), unusual circular and helical morphologies are obtained. These three-dimensional nanostructures can serve as naontemplates for refilling with other functional materials, such as Au, Ag, ZnO, and TiO2.

Although one-dimensional polymer nanomaterials can be prepared by approaches such as the template method, the control over the morphologies of one-dimensional polymer nanomaterials containing multiple components is still a great challenge. In this work, we investigate the formation of polymer nanopeapods using a novel double-solution wetting method in the nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. A polystyrene (PS) solution in dimethylformamide (DMF) is first introduced into the nanopores of the AAO templates. Then a second polymer solution of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in acetic acid is infiltrated into the nanopores. Because of the stronger interaction between acetic acid and aluminum oxide than that between DMF and aluminum oxide, the PMMA solution preferentially wets the pore walls of the templates and the PS solution is isolated in the center of the nanopores. After the evaporation of the solvent, peapod-like PS/PMMA nanostructures are obtained, where the shell and the core are composed of PMMA and PS, respectively. The compositions of the polymer nanopeapods are confirmed by removing PS or PMMA selectively. The formation mechanism of the nanostructures is related to the Rayleigh-instability-type transformation and further studied by changing experimental parameters such as the polymer concentration or the polymer molecular weight. This work not only provides a simple approach to prepare multicomponent polymer nanomaterials with controlled morphologies and sizes, but also contributes to a deeper understanding of polymer solvent-interactions in confined geometries.

A simple and versatile method is developed for preparing anisotropic polymer particles by pressing polymer microspheres at elevated temperatures. Polystyrene (PS) microspheres are used to demonstrate this approach. Depending on the mechanical deformation and wetting of the polymers on the substrates, polymer structures with special shapes such as barrel-like or dumbbell-like shapes can be prepared. The morphology of polymer structures can be controlled by the experimental parameters such as the pressing pressure, the pressing temperature, and the pressing time. The wetting of the polymers on the substrates dominates when the samples are annealing at higher temperatures for longer times.

Electrospun polymer fibers are gaining importance because of their unique properties and applications in areas such as drug delivery, catalysis, or tissue engineering. Most studies to control the morphology and properties of electrospun polymer fibers focus on changing the electrospinning conditions. The effects of post-treatment processes on the morphology and properties of electrospun polymer fibers, however, are little studied. Here, the effect of thermal annealing on the surface properties of electrospun polymer fibers is investigated. Poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene fibers are fist prepared by electrospinning, followed by thermal annealing processes. Upon thermal annealing, the surface roughness of the electrospun polymer fibers decreases. The driving force of the smoothing process is the minimization of the interfacial energy between polymer fibers and air. The water contact angles of the annealed polymer fibers also decrease with the annealing time.

Although nanostructures with diverse morphologies have been fabricated, it is still a great challenge to prepare anisotropic two-dimensional (2-D) nanostructures, especially non-planar disc-like nanostructures. In this work, we develop a simple method to prepare curved polymer nanodiscs with regular sizes by wetting polymer nanospheres in the nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Polystyrene (PS) nanospheres are first fabricated by using a non-solvent-assisted template wetting method. By annealing the PS nanospheres in the nanopores of AAO templates, curved PS nanodiscs can be produced. The length and morphology of the curved PS nanodiscs can be controlled by the wetting conditions such as the annealing temperatures and times. For some stacked nanospheres, the annealing process can result in the formation of helix-like nanostructures. To demonstrate the universality of this work, this approach is also applied to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), another common polymer, and similar results are obtained.
