Item type:Item, Design of Dual-Band Coupler With Arbitrary Power Division Ratios and Phase Differences(2014-12-01) ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Ho, Kuan-Lin ;電機資訊學士班Undergraduate Honors Program of Electrical Engineering and Computer ScienceThis paper presents, for the first time, a directional coupler that allows for arbitrary power division ratios as well as arbitrary phase differences at dual frequencies of interest. Explicit design equations in terms of dual-band power-dividing ratios and phase differences will be given here and were derived based on the even-and odd-mode decomposition analysis. To illustrate the design procedure, examples will be provided and the relevant studies on the coupler\'s electrical parameters for a wide range of dual-band specifications and frequency ratios were conducted, by which the graphical solutions can be readily used as the further design tool. In addition, the resulting operational bandwidths are included and discussed for completeness. To validate our idea, four coupler prototypes were carried out according to the given guidelines. Excellent agreement is obtained between the measured and full-wave calculated results. The functional versatility of the proposed simple structure is well suited to applications in dual-band integrated modules, such as the beam-forming networks, for both loss and size reduction.Item type:Item, Dual-Band Ring Coupler Based on the Composite Right/Left-Handed Folded Substrate-Integrated Waveguide(2014-05-01) ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Chen, Tse-Yu ;電機資訊學士班Undergraduate Honors Program of Electrical Engineering and Computer ScienceIn this letter, a dual-band ring coupler based on the folded substrate-integrated waveguide (FSIW) is proposed. The artificial structure, the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines were implemented in the FSIW by loading the interdigital capacitors in the middle metallic layer to generate a left-handed passband region below the cutoff frequency of the ordinary waveguide mode for coupler miniaturization. The FSIW is the folded counterpart of the substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) and thus can prevent the CRLH transmission lines from radiation loss by shielding the interdigital capacitors in the waveguide. Besides, the FSIW-based coupler is able to eliminate the electromagnetic interference (noise) with adjacent objects and lend itself to multilayer circuit integration. A ring coupler that operates at 4.3 and 7.6 GHz was developed and experimentally verified. To the best of the authors\' knowledge, it is the first time that a dual-band rat-race was implemented and reported based on the CRLH-FSIW structure.Item type:Item, Novel Dual-Band Quasi-0-dB Coupled-Line Coupler Using the Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Lines(2014-02-01) ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Liu, Chun-Chih ;電機資訊學士班Undergraduate Honors Program of Electrical Engineering and Computer ScienceA novel edge-coupled symmetric coupled-line coupler featuring the quasi-0-dB couplings at adjacently dual frequencies is presented based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines. The fulfillment of dual-frequency quasi-0-dB couplings is derived from the complete backward and complete forward coupling phenomena at the higher and lower operating frequencies, respectively. To this end, the dispersion relations of the even and odd-mode CRLH lines have to be engineered in a particular manner so that: 1) the substantial attenuation level for each mode; 2) the 180 degrees phase difference between the even and odd-mode reflection coefficients in the overlapped stopband region are obtained to accomplish the complete backward coupling; 3) the enabling curve intersection for the even and odd-mode Bloch impedances; and 4) the considerable difference between the even and odd-mode propagation constants in the left-handed regions are obtained to suppress the impedance coupling and attain strong forward coupling. Based on a thorough analysis on the even and odd-mode dispersion characteristics and Bloch impedances of the coupled lines, the operating principle and design procedure for the proposed coupler with dual-band complete couplings can be fully explained and greatly simplified. A symmetric CRLH coupled-line coupler consisting of seven coupled unit cells was experimentally developed and a shielding (metal) box was used to prevent radiation loss in the forward coupling band. Experimental results show that the maximum coupling levels are -1.3 and -0.9 dB, corresponding to the 3-dB fractional bandwidths of 15.8% and 10.8% at the lower and higher operating frequencies, respectively. Good agreement is obtained between the simulated and experimental results.Item type:Item, Miniaturized and Large-Division-Ratio Ring Coupler Using Novel Transmission-Line Elements(2014-01-01) ;Ho, Kuan-Lin ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;電機資訊學士班Undergraduate Honors Program of Electrical Engineering and Computer ScienceIn this letter, a novel transmission-line element that is able to exhibit a high-impedance passband is proposed and applied for coupler realization with a large power division ratio. The analysis of the transmission-line element was conducted by its equivalent circuit model and the closed-form equations for the pole and zero frequencies of the effective impedance were derived to help control the passband impedance and phase responses by the lumped parameters. The high-impedance feature of the presented artificial line was exploited to experimentally develop a 12 dB ring coupler, which occupies only 29% footprint of the conventional coupler at 3.5 GHz. Experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation data.Item type:Item, Folded Substrate Integrated Waveguide Based Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Line and Its Application to Partial H-Plane Filters(2013-02-01) ;Yang, Tao ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Xu, Ruimin ;Lin, Weigan電機資訊學士班Composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line structures based on the folded substrate integrated waveguide (FSIW) are presented and discussed in this paper. This FSIW-based CRLH (FSIW-CRLH) transmission line exhibits much lower cut-off frequencies as compared to the ordinary FSIW of the same footprint, and furthermore, it requires only one-half width of the conventional substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) based CRLH (SIW-CRLH) transmission lines while possessing the same dispersion characteristics. In addition, the proposed structure offers the advantage of a high quality factor for preventing the guided-wave circuits from radiation as suffered in the previous open CRLH transmission line structures when operated in the fast-wave region. All of the aforementioned properties lend the proposed FSIW-based CRLH transmission lines best suited to miniaturized and guided-wave microwave applications. In this paper, a comprehensive study on the FSIW-CRLH transmission structures is conducted by means of its dispersion relation and Bloch impedance. In addition, two partial H-plane filters are implemented here to demonstrate the capabilities of miniaturization and high quality factor based on the proposed FSIW-CRLH structures. The resultant filters are shown to have about 80% size reduction as compared to the conventional FSIW filters, and 59% size reduction as compared to the SIW-CRLH filters. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that the partial H-plane filters are implemented utilizing both the dispersion behavior of the CRLH transmission structures and the structural benefits of the FSIW configuration.Item type:Item, Compact Zeroth-Order Resonant Antenna Based on Dual-Arm Spiral Configuration(2012) ;Liu, Chun-Chih ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Lin, Yu-De ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringA miniaturized and zeroth-order resonant composite right/left-handed (CRLH) antenna based on dual-arm spiral structure is presented. The proposed dual-arm spiral unit cell is able to implement and tailor the CRLH lumped elements easily in a compact fashion. Particularly, the gap coupling between the spiral arms contributes to the series capacitance C-L and the metallic via-hole at the end of one arm results in the shunt inductance L-L. The resonant frequency and thus the miniaturization factor can be simply engineered by the spiral parameters that determine the corresponding circuit elements. The proposed CRLH antenna is composed of two unit cells, each of which occupies only 0.066 lambda(0) x 0.053 lambda(0) at the operating frequency. From the experimental results, this compact antenna exhibits the dipole-like radiation patterns and has a peak gain of -0.53 dBi. The measured and simulated results are provided, and good agreement is achieved.Item type:Item, Miniaturized Ring Coupler with Arbitrary Power Divisions Based on the Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Lines(2012-04-01) ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringA novel and miniaturized ring coupler capable of presenting arbitrary power divisions is proposed using the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines. The unbalanced CRLH transmission lines that can be easily tailored to implement transmission lines of high or low Bloch impedance are applied to enhance the coupler's capability of arbitrary power divisions. To support our idea, a ring coupler that offers a 6 dB power division ratio and occupies only 44% of the conventional footprint was experimentally realized. Experimental results agree well with the simulation data. The proposed CRLH configuration demonstrates an alternative for implementing a compact ring coupler with arbitrary power division ratios.Item type:Item, Microstrip realization of generalized Chebyshev filters with box-like coupling schemes(2007-01-01) ;Liao, Ching-Ku ;Chi, Pei-Ling ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper presents generalized Chebyshev microstrip filters with box-like coupling schemes. The box-like coupling schemes taken in this paper include a doublet, extended doublet, and fourth-order box section. The box-like portion of the coupling schemes is implemented by an E-shaped resonator. Synthesis and realization procedures are described in detail. The example filters show an excellent match to the theoretical responses.
