Item type:Item, Conventional vs Unconventional Magnetic Polarons: ZnMnTe/ZnSe and ZnTe/ZnMnSe Quantum Dots(2014-01-01) ;Barman, B. ;Tsai, Y. ;Scrace, T. ;Murphy, J. R.Cartwright, A. N.We used time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy to compare the properties of magnetic polarons in two related, spatially indirect, II-VI epitaxially grown quantum dot systems. In sample A (ZnMnTe/ZnSe), the photoexcited holes are confined in the magnetic ZnMnTe quantum dots (QDs), while the electrons remain in the surrounding non-magnetic ZnSe matrix. In sample B (ZnTe/ZnMnSe) on the other hand, the holes are confined in the non-magnetic ZnTe QDs and the electrons move in the magnetic ZnMnSe matrix. The magnetic polaron formation energies, E-MP, in these samples were measured from the temporal red-shift of the excitonic emission peak. The magnetic polarons in the two samples exhibit distinct characteristics. In sample A, the magnetic polaron is strongly bound with E-MP = 35 meV. Furthermore, E-MP has unconventionally weak dependence of on both temperature T and magnetic field B-appl. In contrast, magnetic polarons in sample B show conventional characteristics with E-MP decreasing with increasing temperature and increasing external magnetic field. We attribute the difference in magnetic polaron properties between the two types of QDs to the difference in the location of the Mn ions in the respective structures.Item type:Item, Effects of substrate temperature on properties of Alq3 amorphous layers prepared by vacuum deposition(2006-01-01) ;Chiu, K. C. ;Jian, Z. A. ;Luo, Y. Z. ;Chung, J. M.Tang, S. J.In this report, various organic Alq3 amorphous layers are prepared by vacuum deposition at different substrate temperatures T-sub (from 30 to 180 degrees C). The surface morphology, structural information, electrical and optical properties of these as-deposited layers are investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, J-E curves, and photoluminescence studies, respectively. Furthermore, a temperature dependence of dark electrical conductivity sigma(T) deduced from J-E curves of these organic amorphous layers is presented. Finally, effects from T-sub on the physical properties of these organic Alq3 amorphous layers are discussed and a model based on a thermal interconversion between Alq3 isomers is proposed to explain these experimental results.Item type:Item, Carrier dynamics in ZnxCd1-xO films grown by molecular beam epitaxy(2016-01-01) ;Cheng, F. J. ;Lee, Y. C. ;Hu, S. Y. ;Lin, Y. C.Tiong, K. K.In this work, the carrier dynamics in Zn1-xCdxO thin films with different Cd contents grown by molecular beam epitaxy system have been investigated using photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. The carrier lifetime can be estimated from the PL decay curve fitted by triple exponential function. The emission energy dependence and temperature dependence of the PL decay time indicate that carrier localization dominate the luminescence mechanism of the ZnCdO alloy semiconductor.Item type:Item, Optical coupling from InGaAs subcell to InGaP subcell in InGaP/InGaAs/Ge multi-junction solar cells(2013-01-14) ;Shu, G. W. ;Lin, J. Y. ;Jian, H. T. ;Shen, J. L.Wang, S. C.Spatially-resolved electroluminescence (EL) images in the triple junction InGaP/InGaAs/Ge solar cell have been investigated to demonstrate the subcell coupling effect. Upon irradiating the infrared light with an energy below bandgap of the active layer in the top subcell, but above that in the middle subcell, the EL of the top subcell quenches. By analysis of EL intensity as a function of irradiation level, it is found that the coupled p-n junction structure and the photovoltaic effect are responsible for the observed EL quenching. With optical coupling and photoswitching effects in the multi-junction diode, a concept of infrared image sensors is proposed. H.Both ensemble and single-molecule measurements were performed to explore the fluorescence properties of Au nanoclusters (NCs). Photoinduced fluorescence enhancement was observed for ensemble NCs in solution, but photobleaching was found at ambient environments. At the single-molecule level, fluorescence blinking and single-step photobleaching were observed. Furthermore, their time-resolved fluorescence shows a single exponential decay with a lifetime of similar to 7 ns and is insensitive to changes in fluorescence intensity. The lifetime distribution is more homogeneous within ensemble Au NCs as compared to CdSe QDs. Therefore, Au NCs have potential applications as nontoxic fluorescent labels for lifetime-based imaging microscopy. However, their low quantum yields and poor photostability are disadvantageous factors, which require further improvement. S.電子物理學系This study elucidates the theory of phonon-induced decoherence of a double dot charge qubit that is embedded inside a suspended semiconductor slab. The influences of the lattice temperature, width of the slab, and positions of the dots on the decoherence are analyzed. Numerical results indicate that the decoherence in the slab system is weaker than that in a bulk environment. In particular, the decoherence is markedly suppressed by the inhibition of the electron-phonon coupling. Such a system with low decoherence may be useful for manipulating the qubits.Item type:Item, Enhancement of light emission in GaAs epilayers with graphene quantum dots(2015-01-01) ;Lin, T. N. ;Chih, K. H. ;Cheng, M. C. ;Yuan, C. T.Hsu, C. L.A green and one-step synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) has been implemented using pulsed laser ablation from aqueous graphene. The synthesized GQDs are able to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) of GaAs epilayers after depositing them on the GaAs surface. An enhancement of PL intensity of a factor of 2.8 has been reached at a GQD concentration of 1.12 mg ml(-1). On the basis of the PL dynamics, the PL enhancement in GaAs is interpreted by the carrier transfer from GQDs to GaAs due to the work function difference between them.Item type:Item, Interrelation of transport and optical properties in gold nanoclusters(2010-09-20) ;Shu, G. W. ;Chen, T. Y. ;Shen, J. L. ;Lin, C. A. J.Chang, W. H.Temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and photoluminescence (PL) in Au nanoclusters (NCs) is investigated. The correlation of the conductivity and PL in Au NCs at different temperatures is evident: (i) for T < 50 K, both the conductivity and PL intensity decrease with temperature, which suggests thermal structural fluctuations; (ii) for 50 K < T < 90 K, conductivity and PL are explained by variable range hopping; (iii) for 90 K < T < 170 K, simple thermal activated hopping dominates in conductivity, with a rate-equation model proposed to analyze the carrier transfer in PL. K.Chou, W. C.High density InN/GaN nanodots were grown by pulsed mode (PM) metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). InN nanodots density of up to similar to 5 x 10(10) cm(-2) at a growth temperature of 550 degrees C was achieved. The high diffusion activation energy of 2.65 eV due to high NH(3) flow rate generated more reactive nitrogen adatoms on the growth surface, and is believed to be the main reason for the growth of high density InN nanodots. In addition, an anomalous temperature dependence of the PL peak energy was observed for high density InN nanodots. The high carrier concentration, due to high In vacancy (V(ln)) in the InN nanodots, thermally agitated to the conduction band. As the measurement temperature increased, the increase of Fermi energy resulted in blue-shifted PL peak energy. From the Arrhenius plot of integrated PL intensity, the thermal activation energy for the PM grown InN nanodots was estimated to be E(a)similar to 51 meV, indicating strong localization of carriers in the high density InN nanodots. H.The sigma(+) and sigma(-) circularly polarized time-integrated and time-resolved Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were employed to investigate the carrier spin dynamics of ZnMnTe/ZnSe Quantum Dots (QDs) grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The Kohlrausch's stretching exponential function well correlates both the sigma(+) and sigma(-) decay profiles. The measured spin relaxation time is about 23 ns. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
