High structural susceptibility of multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) makes it a potential replacement of current Pb-based piezoelectrics. In this study, a tetragonal phase is identified based on a combination of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electronic microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy when BFO is grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. To distinguish the discrepancy between this tetragonal phase and common cases of monoclinic BFO, piezoelectric force microscopy images and optical property are also performed. It shows a lower electrostatic energy of ferroelectric domains and a large reduction of band gap for BFO grown on YSZ substrate comparing to the well-known one grown on LaAlO3 substrate. Our findings in this work can provide more insights to understand the structural diversity of multiferroic BFO system for further applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). Transition metal oxides with a perovskite crystal structure exhibit a variety of physical properties associated with the lattice. Among these materials, strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3) displays unusually strong coupling of charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom that can give rise to the photostriction, that is, changes in the dimensions of material due to the absorption of light. In this study, we observe a photon-induced strain as high as 1.12% in single domain SrRuO3, which we attribute to a nonequilibrium of phonons that are a result of the strong interaction between the crystalline lattice and electrons excited by light. In addition, these light-induced changes in the SrRuO3 lattice affect its electrical resistance. The observation of both photostriction and photoresistance in SrRuO3 suggests the possibility of utilizing the mechanical and optical functionalities of the material for next-generation optoelectronics, such as remote switches, light-controlled elastic micromotors, microactuators and other optomechanical systems.

The rich phase diagram of rhombohedral (R)-like and tetragonal (T)-like monoclinic polymorph in strained BiFeO3 (BFO) films brings on various functionalities. Finding correlations of physical ordering parameters in this system is generally difficult because T-like and R-like phases are undistinguishable in many aspects. In this study, the magnetic-coupled structural transitions of the mixed-phase BFO at low temperatures were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. To resolve the complexity resulted from the similarity between T-like and R-like phases, we analyzed the Raman spectra on a micro-scale region with various T/R ratios, which is in situ manipulated by an AFM tip carrying a dc bias. Phonons of T-like and R-like phases were thus successfully separated. Based on temperature-dependent XRD and resolved Raman spectra, we observed two isostructural transitions at around 225 K and 150 K, and they are strongly correlated with the magnetic ordering in the mixed-phase BFO film. Moreover, through the effective spin-lattice coupling, the evolution of the T/R polymorph is changed by the magnetic cooling process at low temperatures. This study provides a pathway to modulate phonon behaviors by magnetic fields in a highly strained system. (C) 2017 Author(s).

We present a synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction analysis of the domain structure and polar symmetry of highly strained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrate. We reveal the existence of periodic elastic nanodomains in the pure tetragonal-like BFO ultrathin films down to a thickness of 6 nm. A unique shear strain-accommodation mechanism is disclosed. We further demonstrate that the periodicity of the nanodomains increases with film thickness but deviates from the classical square root law in the ultrathin thickness regime (6-30 nm). Temperature-dependent experiments further reveal the disappearance of periodic modulation above similar to 90 degrees C due to a M-C-M-A structural phase transition.

We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and a multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe L edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO). X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K edge and linear dichroism at the Mn L edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly derived from the superexchange between Mn and Fe t(2g) spins. The combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and mean-field theory calculations reveals that the d-electron modulation of Mn cations changes the magnetic coupling in LCMO, which controls the enhanced canted moments of interfacial BFO via the interfacial coupling. Our results demonstrate that the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic instability can be modulated by an electric field at the heterointerface, providing another pathway for the electrical field control of magnetism.

In this work, switching dynamics of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] copolymer films are investigated over unprecedentedly wide ranges of temperature and electric field. Remarkably, domain switching of copolymer films obeys well the classical domain nucleation and growth model although the origin of ferroelectricity in organic ferroelectric materials inherently differs from the inorganic counterparts. A lower coercivity limit of 50 MV/m and 180 degrees domain wall energy of 60 mJ/m(2) are determined for P(VDF-TrFE) films. Furthermore, we discover in copolymer films an anomalous temperature-dependent crossover behavior between two power-law scaling regimes of frequency-dependent coercivity, which is attributed to the transition between flow and creep motions of domain walls. Our observations shed new light on the switching dynamics of semi-crystalline ferroelectric polymers, and such understandings are critical for realizing their reliable applications.

We present a promising technology for nonvolatile flexible electronic devices: A direct fabrication of epitaxial lead zirconium titanate (PZT) on flexible mica substrate via van der Waals epitaxy. These single-crystalline flexible ferroelectric PZT films not only retain their performance, reliability, and thermal stability comparable to those on rigid counterparts in tests of nonvolatile memory elements but also exhibit remarkable mechanical properties with robust operation in bent states (bending radii down to 2.5 mm) and cycling tests (1000 times). This study marks the technological advancement toward realizing much-awaited flexible yet single-crystalline nonvolatile electronic devices for the design and development of flexible, lightweight, and next-generation smart devices with potential applications in electronics, robotics, automotive, health care, industrial, and military systems.

In this study, direct observation of the evolution of electronic structures across complex oxide interfaces has been revealed in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 model system using cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The conduction and valence band structures across the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface are spatially resolved at the atomic level by measuring the local density of states. This study directly maps out the electronic reconstructions and a built-in electric field in the polar LaAlO3 layer. Results also clearly reveal the band bending and the notched band structure in the SrTiO3 adjacent to the interface. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.246807

At the ferroelectric surface, the broken translational symmetry induced bound charge should significantly alter the local atomic configurations. Experimentally revealing the atomic structure of ferroelectric surface, however, is very challenging due to the strong spatial variety between nano-sized domains, and strong interactions between the polarization and other structural parameters. Here, we study surface structures of Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3 thin film by using the annular bright-field imaging. We find that six atomic layers with suppressed polarization and a charged 180 degrees domain wall are at negatively poled surfaces, no reconstruction exists at positively poled surfaces, and seven atomic layers with suppressed polarization and a charged 90 degrees domain wall exist at nominally neutral surfaces in ferroelastic domains. Our results provide critical insights into engineering ferroelectric thin films, fine grain ceramics and surface chemistry devices. The state-of-the-art methodology demonstrated here can greatly advance our understanding of surface science for oxides.
