Item type:Item, Tetragonal BiFeO3 on yttria-stabilized zirconia(2015-11-01) ;Liu, Heng-Jui ;Du, Yu-Hao ;Gao, Peng ;Huang, Yen-ChinChen, Hsiao-WenHigh structural susceptibility of multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) makes it a potential replacement of current Pb-based piezoelectrics. In this study, a tetragonal phase is identified based on a combination of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electronic microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy when BFO is grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. To distinguish the discrepancy between this tetragonal phase and common cases of monoclinic BFO, piezoelectric force microscopy images and optical property are also performed. It shows a lower electrostatic energy of ferroelectric domains and a large reduction of band gap for BFO grown on YSZ substrate comparing to the well-known one grown on LaAlO3 substrate. Our findings in this work can provide more insights to understand the structural diversity of multiferroic BFO system for further applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). While coupled with the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic X-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7 (- x) (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO). This supermodulation has a periodicity nearly commensurate with four lattice constants in-plane, eight out of plane, with long correlation lengths in three dimensions. It sets in far above the superconducting transition temperature and competes with superconductivity below this temperature for electronic states predominantly in the CuO2 plane. Our finding sheds light on the nature of charge ordering in cuprates as well as a reported long-range proximity effect between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in YBCO/LCMO heterostructures.Item type:Item, Periodic elastic nanodomains in ultrathin tetragonal-like BiFeO3 films(2013-08-26) ;Luo, Zhenlin ;Chen, Zuhuang ;Yang, Yuanjun ;Liu, Heng-JuiHuang, ChuanweiWe present a synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction analysis of the domain structure and polar symmetry of highly strained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrate. We reveal the existence of periodic elastic nanodomains in the pure tetragonal-like BFO ultrathin films down to a thickness of 6 nm. A unique shear strain-accommodation mechanism is disclosed. We further demonstrate that the periodicity of the nanodomains increases with film thickness but deviates from the classical square root law in the ultrathin thickness regime (6-30 nm). Temperature-dependent experiments further reveal the disappearance of periodic modulation above similar to 90 degrees C due to a M-C-M-A structural phase transition.Item type:Item, Mapping Band Alignment across Complex Oxide Heterointerfaces(2012-12-12) ;Huang, Bo-Chao ;Chiu, Ya-Ping ;Huang, Po-Cheng ;Wang, Wen-ChingVu Thanh TraIn this study, direct observation of the evolution of electronic structures across complex oxide interfaces has been revealed in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 model system using cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The conduction and valence band structures across the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface are spatially resolved at the atomic level by measuring the local density of states. This study directly maps out the electronic reconstructions and a built-in electric field in the polar LaAlO3 layer. Results also clearly reveal the band bending and the notched band structure in the SrTiO3 adjacent to the interface. By monitoring the core-level shifting of the buried LSMO layer under continuous illumination of synchrotron radiation, we directly observed a temporal screening of polarization induced by the photon-generated carriers in the top PZT layer. This dynamic characterization of the core-level shifting of the buried layer demonstrates an effective method to probe the electric conduction and ferroelectric polarization of an ultrathin ferroelectric oxide thin film.Item type:Item, Tuning the functionalities of a mesocrystal via structural coupling(2015-07-14) ;Liu, Heng-Jui ;Liu, Yun-Ya ;Tsai, Chih-Ya ;Liao, Sheng-ChiehChen, Ying-JiunIn the past decades, mesocrystal, a kind of nanocrystals with specific crystallographic orientation, has drawn a lot of attention due to its intriguing functionalities. While the research community keeps searching for new mesocrystal systems, it is equally crucial to develop new approaches to tune the properties of mesocrystals. In this work, a self-organized two-dimensional mesocrystal composed of highly oriented CoFe2O4 (CFO) nano-crystals with assistance of different perovskite matrices is studied as a model system. We have demonstrated that the strain state and corresponding magnetic properties of the CFO mesocrystal can be modulated by changing the surrounding perovskite matrix through their intimate structural coupling. Interestingly, this controllability is more strongly correlated to the competition of bonding strength between the matrices and the CFO mesocrystals rather than the lattice mismatch. When embedded in a matrix with a higher melting point or stiffness, the CFO mesocrystal experiences higher out-of-plane compressive strain and shows a stronger magnetic anisotropy as well as cation site-exchange. Our study suggests a new pathway to tailor the functionalities of mesocrystals.Item type:Item, Permanent ferroelectric retention of BiFeO3 mesocrystal(2016-10-26) ;Hsieh, Ying-Hui ;Xue, Fei ;Yang, Tiannan ;Liu, Heng-JuiZhu, YuanminNon-volatile electronic devices based on magnetoelectric multiferroics have triggered new possibilities of outperforming conventional devices for applications. However, ferroelectric reliability issues, such as imprint, retention and fatigue, must be solved before the realization of practical devices. In this study, everlasting ferroelectric retention in the heteroepitaxially constrained multiferroic mesocrystal is reported, suggesting a new approach to overcome the failure of ferroelectric retention. Studied by scanning probe microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and supported via the phase-field simulations, the key to the success of ferroelectric retention is to prevent the crystal from ferroelastic deformation during the relaxation of the spontaneous polarization in a ferroelectric nanocrystal.Item type:Item, Origin of metallic behavior in NiCo2O4 ferrimagnet(2015-10-15) ;Bitla, Yugandhar ;Chin, Yi-Ying ;Lin, Jheng-Cyuan ;Van, Chien NguyenLiu, RuiruiPredicting and understanding the cation distribution in spinels has been one of the most interesting problems in materials science. The present work investigates the effect of cation redistribution on the structural, electrical, optical and magnetic properties of mixed-valent inverse spinel NiCo2O4(NCO) thin films. It is observed that the films grown at low temperatures (T < 400 degrees C) exhibit metallic behavior while that grown at higher temperatures (T > 400 degrees C) are insulators with lower ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition temperature. So far, n-type Fe3O4 has been used as a conducting layer for the spinel thin films based devices and the search for a p-type counterpart still remains elusive. The inherent coexistence and coupling of ferrimagnetic order and the metallic nature in p-type NCO makes it a promising candidate for spintronic devices. Detailed X-ray Absorption and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism studies revealed a strong correlation between the mixed-valent cation distribution and the resulting ferrimagnetic-metallic/insulating behavior. Our study clearly demonstrates that it is the concentration of Ni3+ ions and the Ni3+-O-2-Ni2+ double exchange interaction that is crucial in dictating the metallic behavior in NCO ferrimagnet. The metal-insulator and the associated magnetic order-disorder transitions can be tuned by the degree of cation site disorder via growth conditions.Item type:Item, Concurrent transition of ferroelectric and magnetic ordering near room temperature(2011-11-01) ;Ko, Kyung-Tae ;Jung, Min Hwa ;He, Qing ;Lee, Jin HongWoo, Chang SuStrong spin-lattice coupling in condensed matter gives rise to intriguing physical phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance and giant magnetoelectric effects. The phenomenological hallmark of such a strong spin-lattice coupling is the manifestation of a large anomaly in the crystal structure at the magnetic transition temperature. Here we report that the magnetic Neel temperature of the multiferroic compound BiFeO3 is suppressed to around room temperature by heteroepitaxial misfit strain. Remarkably, the ferroelectric state undergoes a first-order transition to another ferroelectric state simultaneously with the magnetic transition temperature. Our findings provide a unique example of a concurrent magnetic and ferroelectric transition at the same temperature among proper ferroelectrics, taking a step toward room temperature magnetoelectric applications.Item type:Item, Giant Enhancement of Ferroelectric Retention in BiFeO3 Mixed-Phase Boundary(2014-09-24) ;Huang, Yen-Chin ;Liu, Yunya ;Lin, Yi-Tsu ;Liu, Heng-JuiHe, QingA large enhancement of nanodomain retentionis shown in the mixed-phase region of a strained BiFeO3 epitaxial film. The superior ferroelectric retention is attributed to a lower elastic-energy density at the phase boundaries, which act as periodic pinning centers for the domain wall motion. This study delivers a new pathway of incorporating an elastic-energy term to assist ferroelectric retention.
