Item type:Item, Simultaneous two-dimensional nanometric-scale position monitoring by probing a two-dimensional photonic crystal plate(2010-01-01) ;Hsu, Kuei-Chu ;Chen, Chii-Chang ;Chan, Chia-Hua ;Chung, Pei-FangLai, YinchiehSimultaneous two-dimensional nanometric-scale position monitoring can be achieved in a simple interferometric setup by real-time probing a hexagonal photonic crystal glass substrate. The minimum detectable translational movement is determined by the period of photonic crystal array, and can be as high as 8 nm in the present work.Item type:Item, An Electrically Tunable Polarizer for a Fiber System Based on a Polarization-Dependent Beam Size Derived From a Liquid Crystal Lens(2014-06-01) ;Chen, Michael ;Chen, Chyong-Hua ;Lai, Yinchieh ;Lu, Yan-qingLin, Yi-HsinA broadband electrically tunable variable polarizer for fiber systems based on a liquid crystal lens is proposed and demonstrated. The polarization selectivity is based on a polarization-sensitive coupling efficiency to the fiber in the fiber system. For an incident ordinary ray, the output beam size remains the same as that of the incident beam, which results in low coupling efficiency. For an incident extraordinary ray (e-ray), the output beam size is close to the size of the fiber core, giving rise to high coupling efficiency because of the lens effect. Moreover, the output beam size of the e-ray can be electrically controlled, thus allowing the optical attenuation to be manipulated. In our experiments, the polarizationdependent loss from the visible to the near-infrared spectral region was approximately 12 dB. Such a broadband electrically variable polarizer may be applied to various designs for fiberoptic sensing devices and polarization-sensitive optical instruments.Item type:Item, Entangled Quantum Nonlinear Schroumldinger Solitons(2009-07-03) ;Lai, Yinchieh ;Lee, Ray-Kuang ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsConsidered as a multipartite quantum system, time-multiplexed nonlinear Schroumldinger solitons after collision are rigorously proved to become quantum entangled in the sense that their quadrature components of suitably selected internal modes satisfy the inseparability criterion. Clear physical insights for the origin of entanglement are given, and the required homodyne local oscillator pulse shape for optimum entanglement detection is determined.Item type:Item, Vertical plasmonic resonance coupler(2015-01-12) ;Hsu, Yi-Jang ;Lai, Yinchieh ;光電工程學系 ;光電工程研究所Department of PhotonicsEfficient wavelength-selective coupling of lights between subwavelength plasmonic waveguides and free space is theoretically investigated. The idea is based on a new type of vertical resonance coupling devices built on plasmonic metal/insulator/metal (MIM)waveguides. The device structure consists of a vertical grating coupler in a resonance cavity formed by two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). With the metal loss included, maximum coupling efficiency around 50% can be obtained at the 1550 nm wavelength with a filtering 3dB bandwidth around 20 nm (7nm for the lossless case), demonstrating the feasibility of the idea for achieving high efficiency wavelength-selective vertical coupling through optical resonance. By utilizing this coupler, a plasmonic add-drop device is proposed and theoretically demonstrated. This kind of compact wavelength selective coupling devices shall have the potential to open up a new avenue of photonics circuitry at nanoscale. Three distinct mode-locking states are found and their transition diagram under varying detuning frequency and modulation strength is determined. By examining the steady-state lasing gain as a function of the detuning modulation frequency, we also clarify why the laser will become unstable near the transition points and why the nonlinear saturable absorption effect is crucial for the stable asynchronous mode-locking operation.Item type:Item, Bound Soliton Fiber Laser Mode-Locking Without Saturable Absorption Effect(2016-08-01) ;Luo, Cheng-Jhih ;Wang, Sheng-Min ;Lai, Yinchieh ;光電工程學系光電工程研究所Stable bound soliton laser mode-locking is experimentally demonstrated in an environmentally stable hybrid mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser without incorporating (equivalent) nonlinear saturable absorption effects. The laser has a sigma-type cavity and exhibits a higher threshold for single to bound soliton mode-locking state transition. A nonlinear eigenstate analysis based on the master equation model and the concept of steady-state lasing gain is developed to more physically explain the observed mode-locking state transition phenomena.Item type:Item, Quantum squeezing and correlation of self-induced transparency solitons(2009-09-01) ;Lee, Ray-Kuang ;Lai, Yinchieh ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA general quantum theory of self-induced transparency (SIT) solitons is developed with nonlinear quantum effects of atoms taken into account. The quantization starts from the coarse-grain-averaged light-atom interaction Hamiltonian by which the quantum effects of ensemble atoms are modeled. The calculation of quantum properties is performed by the backpropagation method, which takes into account the contribution of the field continuum parts and the atomic fluctuations. The detectable squeezing ratio with a general homodyne local oscillator can be simulated for practical experimental realizations. Schemes for generating quantum correlation through SIT soliton interaction are also proposed and analyzed.Item type:Item, Relative Intensity Noise of Hybrid Mode-Locked Bound Soliton Fiber Laser: Theory and Experiment(2018-09-01) ;Luo, Cheng-Jhih ;Lai, Yinchieh ;光電學院 ;光電工程學系College of PhotonicsRelative intensity noises (RIN) of mode-locked lasers are properties which are crucial for applications. In the literature, there have been plenty of theoretical/experimental studies on the RIN noises of passive/active single-pulse mode-locked lasers. Since some mode-locked lasers can also be operated under the bound-pulse mode-locking state, it is thus very interesting to further examine the RIN properties under bound-pulse mode-locking, and to verify if there are possibilities for RIN noise reduction as predicted by some previous theoretical works. The conventional analytical formula based on the soliton perturbation theory can no longer be applied due to the pulse shape complexity for the bound-pulse mode-locking cases. New theoretical tools for modelling general mode-locked lasers are eagerly awaited. In the present work, the RIN noises of an environmentally stable 10 GHz hybrid mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser capable of bound-soliton generation are experimentally investigated, and a novel theoretical method based on the linearized backpropagation approach is theoretically developed for calculating the RIN noise spectra of general mode-locked lasers. Both the theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the RIN noise of the bound-soliton state can be lower than that of the single-soliton state by following the laser power scaling tendency.Item type:Item, Fabrication of complex fiber grating structures by use of sequential writing with polarization control(2005-07-14) ;Chuang, Kai-Ping ;Sheu, Lih-Gen ;Tsai, Meng-ChangLai, YinchiehThe present invention provides a fabrication method of complex fiber grating structures that can be combined with prior fabrication methods including a phasemask or a two-beam interferometer. By using a rotatable half-wave plate with a polarization beam splitter in the optical path and precisely scanning the relative fiber position, we can expose true complex fiber gratings in a single scan by simultaneously rotating the angle of the half-wave plate.Item type:Item, Fabrication of true apodized fiber bragg grating using a new two-beam interferometer with polarization control(2005-07-14) ;Chuang, Kai-Ping ;Sheu, Lih-Gen ;Tsai, Meng-ChangLai, YinchiehThe present invention provides a two-beam interference exposure system that can be simply adjusted by rotating only one mirror. By placing a half-wave plate in one of the interference arms and precisely scanning the relative fiber position, the present invention can expose true apodized fiber Bragg gratings in a single scan by simultaneously rotating the angle of the half-wave plate. By rotationally switching the fast and slow axes of the half-wave plate, the present invention can also expose n-phase-shifted fiber grating by the same system.
