Item type:Item, Large area lighting applications with organic dye embedded flexible film(2015-01-01) ;Lin, Huang-Yu ;Tu, Zong-Yi ;Ku, Pei-Cheng ;Lin, Chien-ChungKuo, Hao-ChungA flexible large area lighting devices have been demonstrated by PDMS films. The (polydimethylsiloxane) PDMS films doped with organic/inorganic materials. The PDMS film is favorable due to its heat stability, good transparency, and flexibility. This study aimed to combine both organic and inorganic materials for flexible large area lighting applications. The architecture consists of blue LEDs coupled to a leaky waveguide that is covered with the PDMS film. The white light was generated with the poly (9, 9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) F8BT blended into the PDMS slurry. Organic wavelength conversion materials were chosen owing to their ability to decompose in nature. The more conventional inorganic phosphors such as YAG are difficult to decompose and may present environmental issues which can bring concerns in many lighting applications. These flexible PDMS films had thicknesses of 100 mu m, 440 mu m, and 980 mu m. The resulting white light devices had color temperatures of 8944K, 4863K, and 4429K, respectively. In this study, we have also compared the performance of the organic versus conventional YAG phosphor embedded films.Item type:Item, Optical and electrical properties of GaN-based light emitting diodes grown on micro and nano-scale patterned Si substrate(2011-01-01) ;Chiu, Ching-Hsueh ;Lin, Chien-Chung ;Deng, Dongmei ;Kuo, Hao-ChungLau, Kei-MayWe investigate the optical and electrical characteristics of the GaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on Micro and Nano-scale Patterned silicon substrate (MPLEDs and NPLEDs). The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal the suppression of threading dislocation density in InGaN/GaN structure on nano-pattern substrate due to nanoscale epitaxial lateral overgrowth (NELOG). The plan-view and cross-section cathodoluminescence (CL) mappings show less defective and more homogeneous active quantum well region growth on nano-porous substrates. From temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) and low temperature time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurement, NPLEDs has better carrier confinement and higher radiative recombination rate than MPLEDs. In terms of device performance, NPLEDs exhibits smaller electroluminescence (EL) peak wavelength blue shift, lower reverse leakage current and decreases efficiency droop compared with the MPLEDs. These results suggest the feasibility of using NPSi for the growth of high quality and power LEDs on Si substrates.Item type:Item, Resonant-enhanced full-color emission of quantum-dot-based micro LED display technology(2015-12-14) ;Han, Hau-Vei ;Lin, Huang-Yu ;Lin, Chien-Chung ;Chong, Wing-CheungLi, Jie-RuColloidal quantum dots which can emit red, green, and blue colors are incorporated with a micro-LED array to demonstrate a feasible choice for future display technology. The pitch of the micro-LED array is 40 mu m, which is sufficient for high-resolution screen applications. The method that was used to spray the quantum dots in such tight space is called Aerosol Jet technology which uses atomizer and gas flow control to obtain uniform and controlled narrow spots. The ultra-violet LEDs are used in the array to excite the red, green and blue quantum dots on the top surface. To increase the utilization of the UV photons, a layer of distributed Bragg reflector was laid down on the device to reflect most of the leaked UV photons back to the quantum dot layers. With this mechanism, the enhanced luminous flux is 194% (blue), 173% (green) and 183% (red) more than that of the samples without the reflector. The luminous efficacy of radiation (LER) was measured under various currents and a value of 165 lm/Watt was recorded. Growth temperature optimization was performed to obtain the best quality of InN epitaxial layer in the MOCVD system. The temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) can provide the information about thermal quenching in the InN PL transitions and at least two non-radiative processes can be observed. X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy are applied to confirm the inclusion of indium and the formation of InN layer. The band alignment of such system shows a typical double heterojunction, which is preferred in optoelectronic device operation. The photodetector manufactured by this ZnO/GaN/InN layer can exhibit extended long-wavelength quantum efficiency, as high as 3.55%, and very strong photocurrent response under solar simulator illumination. The GQW can improve the fill factor from 42% to 62% and enhance the short current density from 0.8 mA/cm(2) to 0.92 mA/cm(2), as compares to the typical MQW solar cells. As a result, the PCE is boosted from 0.63% to 1.11% under AM1.5G illumination. Based on simulation and experimental results, the enhanced PCE can be attributed to the improved carrier collection in GQW caused by the reduction of potential barriers and piezoelectric polarization induced fields near the p-GaN layer. The presented concept paves a way toward highly efficient InGaN-based solar cells and other GaN-related MQW devices. The flip-chip bonding technology is applied to facilitate this design. The ZrO2 nanoparticles are also doped into the PDMS film to increase light scattering. The resultant luminous efficiency shows an 11% enhancement when compared to the regular COG device. The variation of correlated color temperature of such devices is also reduced to 132K. In addition to these changes, the surface temperature is reduced from 121 degrees C to 104 degrees C due to good thermal dissipation brought by ZrO2 nanoparticles. Extending the dimensions of the nano-honeycomb structures improved the color uniformity of the flexible samples, and the 950-nm pattern sample demonstrated optimal color uniformity because this nano-pattern exhibited an excellent diffusion ability owing to its pitch size. In addition to color uniformity, the use of this nano-pattern improved the luminous efficiency. The 750-nm pattern exhibited the highest luminous efficiency (235.8 lm/W), which was approximately 7% higher than that exhibited by a non-patterned phosphor film sample. Thus, flexible w-LEDs with nano-honeycomb structure optimization have great potential to be used as next-generation lighting sources. This hybrid design effectively boosts photon harvesting at long wavelengths while enhancing the collection of photogenerated carriers in the ultraviolet region. The merits of using highly efficient semiconductor solar cells and colloidal quantum dots were seamlessly combined to increase overall power conversion efficiency. Several photovoltaic parameters, including short-circuit current density, open circuit voltage, and external quantum efficiency, were measured and analyzed to investigate the performance of this hybrid device. Offering antireflective features at long wavelengths and luminescent downshifting for high-energy photons, the quantum dots effectively enhanced overall power conversion efficiency by as high as 24.65% compared with traditional GaAs-based devices. The evolution of weighted reflectance as a function of the dilution factor of QDs was investigated. Further analysis of the quantum efficiency response showed that the luminescent downshifting effect can be as much as 6.6% of the entire enhancement of photogenerated current.Item type:Item, High thermal stability of correlated color temperature using current compensation in hybrid warm white high-voltage LEDs(2013-03-11) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Kuo, Hsuan-Ting ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Shih, Min-HsiungWang, Chao-HsunThis study experimentally and numerically examines the correlated color temperature (CCT) stability issue for hybrid warm white high-voltage light-emitting diodes (HV-LEDs) by using a current compensation method. This method could efficiently maintain the CCT stability factor at approximately 1.0 and yield greater color uniformity with Delta u'v' values ranging from 0.017 to 0.003 in CIE 1976 chromaticity coordinates. The simulation results show that the red chip intensity drop is the primary cause of CCT instability in the hybrid warm white system when the temperature increases. Therefore, Furthermore, results indicate that the relative lumen drop improves from 21% to 15% by using a current compensation method. However, typically adopted modulation schemes generate DSB signals, making DSB-to-SSB conversion necessary before or after fiber distribution. This study investigates a semiconductor laser at stable locking dynamics for such conversion. The conversion relies solely on the nonlinear dynamical interaction between an input DSB signal and the laser. Only a typical semiconductor laser is therefore required as the key conversion unit, and no pump or probe signal is necessary. The conversion can be achieved for a broad tunable range of microwave frequency up to at least 60 GHz. In addition, the conversion can be carried out even when the microwave frequency, the power of the input DSB signal, or the frequency of the input DSB signal fluctuates over a wide range, leading to high adaptability and stability of the conversion system. After conversion, while the microwave phase quality, such as linewidth and phase noise, is mainly preserved, a bit-error ratio down to 10(-9) is achieved for a data rate up to at least 8 Gb/s with a detection sensitivity improvement of more than 1.5 dB.
