Item type:Item, Wavelength Fine-tuning Flexible Photonic Crystal Rods Laser(2012-01-01) ;Lai, Kun-Ting ;Kuo, Ming-Yen ;Hsu, Kung-Shu ;Lin, Chun-TingShih, Min-HsiungIn this study, a flexible photonic crystal laser was demonstrated with InGaAsP nano rods on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The InGaAsP nano-rods content 4 quantum wells which are designed for 1.55 mu m communication wavelength. The lasing action was observed around 1550nm which is a band-edge emission at high-symmetry Gamma-point of photonic crystals. One of advantages of the flexible laser is the fine-tuning of optical properties by manipulating its geometry. In this work, we observed the lasing wavelength can be controlled by increasing photonic crystal lattice extension. The lasing wavelength was linearly red-shift up to 6 nm as the lattice extension percentage increased to 2.2%. The wavelength tuning rate is approximately 2.69 nm for 1 % lattice extension. Those geometric fine-tuning properties indicate the flexible photonic crystal laser can be applied as a compact tunable light source in photonic crystal integrated circuits or biomedical sensors.Item type:Item, Growing GaN LEDs on amorphous SiC buffer with variable C/Si compositions(2016-01-22) ;Cheng, Chih-Hsien ;Tzou, An-Jye ;Chang, Jung-Hung ;Chi, Yu-ChiehLin, Yung-HsiangThe epitaxy of high-power gallium nitride (GaN) light-emitting diode (LED) on amorphous silicon carbide (a-SixC1-x) buffer is demonstrated. The a-SixC1-x buffers with different nonstoichiometric C/Si composition ratios are synthesized on SiO2/Si substrate by using a low-temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The GaN LEDs on different SixC1-x buffers exhibit different EL and C-V characteristics because of the extended strain induced interfacial defects. The EL power decays when increasing the Si content of SixC1-x buffer. The C-rich SixC1-x favors the GaN epitaxy and enables the strain relaxation to suppress the probability of Auger recombination. When the SixC1-x buffer changes from Si-rich to C-rich condition, the EL peak wavelengh shifts from 446 nm to 450 nm. Moreover, the uniform distribution contour of EL intensity spreads between the anode and the cathode because the traping density of the interfacial defect gradually reduces. In comparison with the GaN LED grown on Sirich SixC1-x buffer, the device deposited on C-rich SixC1-x buffer shows a lower turn-on voltage, a higher output power, an external quantum efficiency, and an efficiency droop of 2.48 V, 106 mW, 42.3%, and 7%, respectively.Item type:Item, Vernier-like super resolution with guided correlated photon pairs(2016-01-11) ;Nespoli, Matteo ;Goan, Hsi-Sheng ;Shih, Min-Hsiung ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe describe a dispersion-enabled, ultra-low power realization of super-resolution in an integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our scheme is based on a Vernier-like effect in the coincident detection of frequency correlated, non-degenerate photon pairs at the sensor output in the presence of group index dispersion. We design and simulate a realistic integrated refractive index sensor in a silicon nitride on silica platform and characterize its performance in the proposed scheme. We present numerical results showing a sensitivity improvement upward of 40 times over a traditional sensing scheme. The device we design is well within the reach of modern semiconductor fabrication technology. We believe this is the first metrology scheme that uses waveguide group index dispersion as a resource to attain super-resolution. This method could efficiently maintain the CCT stability factor at approximately 1.0 and yield greater color uniformity with Delta u'v' values ranging from 0.017 to 0.003 in CIE 1976 chromaticity coordinates. The simulation results show that the red chip intensity drop is the primary cause of CCT instability in the hybrid warm white system when the temperature increases. Therefore, Furthermore, results indicate that the relative lumen drop improves from 21% to 15% by using a current compensation method. However, the conventional lasers with additional circular-polarization converters are bulky and hardly compatible with nanophotonic circuits, and most active chiral plasmonic nanostructures nowadays exhibit broadband emission and low circular dichroism. In this work, with spirals of gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires (NWRs) covered by a metal layer, we demonstrated an ultrasmall semiconductor laser capable of emitting circularly-polarized photons. The left-and right-hand spiral metal nanowire cavities with varied periods were designed at ultraviolet wavelengths to achieve the high quality factor circular dichroism metastructures. The dissymmetry factors characterizing the degrees of circular polarizations of the left-and right-hand chiral lasers were 1.4 and -1.6 (+/- 2 if perfectly circular polarized), respectively. The results show that the chiral cavities with only 5 spiral periods can achieve lasing signals with the high degrees of circular polarizations.Item type:Item, Improvement of light quality by DBR structure in white LED(2015-02-09) ;Lin, Huang-Yu ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Wang, Sheng-Wen ;Lin, Chien-ChungWang, Kuan-YuThis study demonstrates the application of DBR structure into the remote phosphor structure to improve the angular correlated color temperature (CCT) deviation in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In the experiment, the LED device with DBR structure yielded a higher luminous efficiency than a conventional structure. The CCT deviation can be improved from 1758K to 280K in a range of -70 to 70 degree and the luminous flux increases more than 10% due to the enhancement of the light extraction of the blue light. Moreover, the reflectance of the different DBR structures is analyzed with different angles to reveal the reasons of such improvements. As the result, this LED device with DBR structure shows the great potential to use as the next generation lighting source. The luminous efficiency of the hybrid phosphor structure improved by 5.9% and 11.7%, compared with the conventional remote and conformal phosphor structures, respectively, because of the increased intensity of the yellow component. The hybrid structure also has an advantage in the phosphor usage reduction for the LEDs. Furthermore, the electric intensity of the hybrid phosphor structure was calculated for various thicknesses by conducting TFCalc32 simulation, and the enhanced utilization of blue rays was verified. Finally, the experimental results were consistent with the simulation results performed using the Monte-Carlo method. The CSP structures produce higher light extraction efficiency and lower assembly-dependent packaging compared with conventional surface-mounted devices (SMDs). Simulation results show that compared with SMDs, the luminous efficiency of CSP structures is 8.81% higher in lighting applications and 9.43% higher in BLU applications. This is likely due to light loss in the light bowl of the SMDs. Moreover, CSPs with a conformal phosphor structure exhibit low assembly dependence and redundancy, and rb-CSPs with a conformal structure are a more effective light source in both lighting and BLU applications. This result indicates that the hybrid white LED device has the higher luminous efficiency than the convention one, which could be attributed to the increased utilization rate of the UV light. Furthermore, the CIE 1931 coordinate of high quality white hybrid LED with different CCT range from 3000K to 9000K is demonstrated. Consequently, the angular-dependent CCT and the thermal issue of the hybrid white LED device were also analyzed in this study. The absorptivity of such structure can be increased by tailoring the ratio of disk size to the unit cell area. The metallic disk exhibits a localized surface plasmon polariton (LSPP) mode for both TE and TM polarizations. A broadband thermal emitter can be realized because the LSPP mode is independent of the periodicities. By manipulating the ratios and disk sizes, a high-performance, wide-angle, polarization-independent dual band absorber was experimentally achieved. The results demonstrated a substantial flexibility in absorber designs for applications in thermal photovoltaics, sensors, and camouflage. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
