Traditionally, tube thoracostomy is the first choice for managing this complication. The goal of this study was to determine the benefits of this approach in elderly patients with and without an initial tube thoracostomy. Seventy-eight patients aged >65 years with blunt chest trauma and stable vital signs were included. All of them had more than 300mL of hemothorax, indicating that a tube thoracostomy was necessary. The basic demographic data and clinical outcomes of patients with hemothorax who underwent direct video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery without a tube thoracostomy were compared with those who received an initial tube thoracostomy. Patients who did not receive a thoracostomy had lower posttrauma infection rates (28.6% versus 56.3%, P = 0.061) and a significantly shorter length of stay in the intensive care unit (3.13 versus 8.27, P = 0.029) and in the hospital (15.93 versus 23.17, P = 0.01) compared with those who received a thoracostomy. The clinical outcomes in the patients who received direct VATS were more favorable compared with those of the patients who did not receive direct VATS.Item type:Item, Impact of Ergonomic and Social Psychological Perspective: A Case Study of Fashion Technology Adoption in Taiwan(2011) ;Yang, Chyan ;Hsu, Yi-Chun ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceRecently, there have been dramatic and emerging innovations in portable media devices. This is evident, for example, with the Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune, Sony Walkman, and the Samsung and iriver media players. Because of this, how to best understand the users' intentions to adopt these fashionable technologies has become a new issue in the information technology domain. However, in the literature, little is published about what motivates people to adopt these innovative technologies. To address this issue, this research sought to come up with a model by integrating key variables from the role of ergonomic and social psychological facets on estimates of the fashion technology acceptance. A structural equation modeling approach was used to examine 10 hypotheses in the proposed model. The results indicated that usefulness, playfulness, and aesthetics from the ergonomic facet and critical mass from the social psychological perspective positively contributed to the users' intent to adopt the fashion technology. Furthermore, the perceived ease of use indirectly affects adoptive intentions through perceived usefulness and playfulness. Important implications of these findings are discussed from both theoretical and practical aspects.Item type:Item, How early should VATS be performed for retained haemothorax in blunt chest trauma?(2014-09-01) ;Lin, Hsing-Lin ;Huang, Wen-Yen ;Yang, Chyan ;Chou, Shih-MinChiang, Hsin-I.Background: Blunt chest injury is not uncommon in trauma patients. Haemothorax and pneumothorax may occur in these patients, and some of them will develop retained pleural collections. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has become an appropriate method for treating these complications, but the optimal timing for performing the surgery and its effects on outcome are not clearly understood. Materials and methods: In this study, a total of 136 patients who received VATS for the management of retained haemothorax from January 2003 to December 2011 were retrospectively enrolled. All patients had blunt chest injuries and 90% had associated injuries in more than two sites. The time from trauma to operation was recorded and the patients were divided into three groups: 2-3 days (Group 1), 4-6 days (Group 2), and 7 or more days (Group 3). Clinical outcomes such as the length of stay (LOS) at the hospital and intensive care unit (ICU), and duration of ventilator and chest tube use were all recorded and compared between groups. Results: The mean duration from trauma to operation was 5.9 days. All demographic characteristics showed no statistical differences between groups. Compared with other groups, Group 3 had higher rates of positive microbial cultures in pleural collections and sputum, longer duration of chest tube insertion and ventilator use. Lengths of hospital and ICU stay in Groups 1 and 2 showed no statistical difference, but were longer in Group 3. The frequency of repeated VATS was lower in Group 1 but without statistically significant difference. Discussion: This study indicated that an early VATS intervention would decrease chest infection. It also reduced the duration of ventilator dependency. The clinical outcomes were significantly better for patients receiving VATS within 3 days under intensive care. In this study, we suggested that VATS might be delayed by associated injuries, but should not exceed 6 days after trauma. (C) 2014 The Authors. Design/methodology/approach - This study employs the document co-citation method to model the intellectual structure of ABC between 1988 and 2008. After an initial co-citation analysis of the condition-limited literature set to find the relationships between core articles, this study further implements multivariate statistical techniques to construct representations for the ABC intellectual structure. Findings - A total of four important subjects chronologically provide a panoramic view of the evolution of ABC. This study finds some dimensions of the results to be in accordance with prior research, but further achieves insights into the core ideas underpinning the ABC discipline. It demonstrates the validity of this study conducting a co-citation analysis based on the citation data of Google Scholar. Research limitations/implications - The classification, core articles, and evolution of the ABC literature published in the past two decades benefit academic researchers conducting future studies that build systematically on prior research. Practical implications - The intellectual structure of the ABC discipline explains and predicts the stages of ABC implementation's life cycle. For the accounting profession, this helps a consultant/practitioner in sub-fields of the ABC domain to quickly and easily enlarge the coverage and viewpoints or perspectives within his/her cluster of interest and to jointly consider the successful factors of implementing ABC in an organization. Originality/value - The empirical feasibility of using digitally archival information to model an intellectual structure of ABC is attained; and the intellectual structure and its various representations provide researchers, consultants, and practitioners with a macroscopic and dynamic view of the ABC discipline.Item type:Item, Regional differences of online learning behavior patterns(2013) ;Yang, Chyan ;Hsieh, Tsui-Chuan ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinancePurpose - The aim of this paper is to show that online learning behaviors are dictated by both personal characteristics and regional differences. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected from 16,133 users in 25 regions of Taiwan. The paper examined usage behaviors by looking at 11 items of categorical variables about online learning. This study implemented a multi-level latent class model to investigate online learning behavior patterns that exhibit regional differences. Findings - The results showed that online learning patterns do exhibit regional differences, as the regional segments are dictated by the individual segments of different use patterns. For instance, the urban area segment comprised a higher proportion of members who are good at using the internet. The rural area segment made up a higher proportion of members who occasionally use the internet. Interestingly, rural users went online more often than urban users when in search of e-learning or entertainment. On the other hand, the individual segments are dictated by users' personal characteristics. For instance, younger people are good at employing online learning and entertainment services. Moreover, those who use many types of online applications pay less respect to intellectual property rights than those who only use a few types of applications. Originality/value - By using a massive amount of survey data to show regional differences in online learning behavior patterns, the findings herein will help internet service providers form an applicable guideline for developing service strategies of higher service satisfaction between products and users' needs.Item type:Item, Urban and rural differences Multilevel latent class analysis of online activities and e-payment behavior patterns(2013) ;Hsieh, Tsui-Chuan ;Yang, Keng-Chieh ;Yang, Conna ;Yang, Chyan經營管理研究所Purpose - The purpose of this article is to investigate urban and rural differences for online activities and e-payment behavior patterns. Design/methodology/approach - This study applied the MLCA model to investigate Internet usage patterns from 11 online applications among 10,909 Taiwan residents in 25 different regions. Findings - The results showed that online behavior patterns exhibited regional differences, as the regional segments affected the individual segments of different use patterns. For instance, the urban area comprised a higher proportion of members who were accustomed to internet applications and skilled in online shopping by using a credit card. The rural area made up a higher proportion of members who only occasionally used online services. Moreover, rural region residents used other payment methods (excluding credit cards) more often than urban region residents. As expected, users' personal characteristics also dictated the online behavior-pattern. For instance, people with higher-level income spent relatively more money for online shopping and often used various internet applications than others. Practical implications - The findings herein should help Internet service providers form an applicable guideline for developing service strategies of higher service satisfaction regarding products and users' needs. Originality/value - This study implemented a multilevel latent class model to investigate online behavior patterns that exhibited urban and rural differences, with the goal of providing service providers an understanding and mastery of their target users.Item type:Item, Why do we blog? From the perspectives of technology acceptance and media choice factors(2013-04-01) ;Chang, Yao-Sheng ;Yang, Chyan ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementBlogs, or weblogs, have rapidly grown in recent years. Blogs are easy to use, possess interactive features and attract widespread use, leading them to be recognised as a communication medium in web-based information technology. However, why do so many people use blogs? The purpose of this study is to incorporate the technology acceptance model (TAM) with media choice factors to explain and predict blog acceptance behaviours. The media choice factors include media richness, critical mass, social influence (SI) and media experience (ME). This study conducted an online field survey and applied the structure equation modelling method to investigate the empirical strength of the relationships in the proposed model. In this study, 521 experienced blog users were surveyed to examine this model. The results strongly support the proposed hypotheses, indicating that technology acceptance and media choice factors influence blog acceptance behaviours. This article provides implications and recommendations resulting from the study.Item type:Item, Influence of Risk Aversion on Distinct Risky Investment Preference: The Mediating Role of Information Search(2009) ;Tseng, Shun-Yao ;Yang, Chyan ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementRisk aversion is one of major psychological determinants of risky decision-making behavior and information search is often used as a way to overcome perceived risk by investors. This study attempted to propose a mediated model of the determinants of risky investment decision making where theorizing that the effect of risk aversion on risky investment decision was mediated by information search, integrating risk aversion and information search. We expected that the results could provide empirical support for (1) the inconsistency of risk aversion across different risky investment in financial domains, and (2) the usefulness of the mediated model which views the information search as a mediator of effects on indirect risky investment preference, especially the mediating role of professional advice. Thus the practical implications for professional advisors or for mutual fund companies could be addressed.Item type:Item, Does intellectual capital matter? Assessing the profitability and marketability of IC design companies(2012-10-01) ;Kuo, Mei-Huan ;Yang, Chyan ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceUnder a highly competitive market and a dynamic industrial environment, how to evaluate and enhance an integrated circuit (IC) design company's good performance is important. This paper develops a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) combined intellectual capital theory through financial and non-financial data to evaluate a performance process on the IC design company. It adopts a new slacks-based measure (SBM) to obtain a more accurate performance estimation and rank between companies. This paper further uses the Simar and Wilson procedure with a truncated regression to explore the impact of intellectual capital variables on performance and competitive advantage. From the study we suggest to the company in how to enhance precisely its performance to create company value and success.
