Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks are designed to provide end-to-end transport of user data via virtual connections with specified quality of services (QOS), which is expected to be satisfied through effective traffic control mechanisms. This paper presents an adaptive delay-jitter control (ADJC) method that guarantees the delay bounds of constant bit rate (CBR) services in ATM networks. Our proposed method is based on a node-by-node time-frame scheme. Through both mathematical derivation and simulation, we have demonstrated that ADJC features a significant improvement over existing approaches in jitter delay, which can be reduced to one time-frame from end-to-end for CBR traffic. Simulation results have shown that CBR services receive satisfactory delay performance using our approach. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

In this paper, we investigate the dual control problem-TCP how control at the TCP layer and ABR how control at the ATM layer. First, we observe that TCP how control and ABR how control cannot co-operate well. The worst case is that the slow start after packet loss causes high but unused ACR (Allowed Cell Rate) which raises the potential of cell loss and an underflowed switch queue which reduces ABR throughput. We suggest to implement a use-it-or-lose-it policy for ABR and fast recovery for TCP to avoid these phenomena. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we propose an improved technique for congestion control, named as ping-pong flow control (PPFC), for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) available bit rate (ABR) traffic. This is a rate-based flow control scheme, in which the rate regulation is achieved by directly adjusting the transmission rate in the source end station. The proposed algorithm uses a bipolar feedback strategy, which employs positive and negative feedbacks to control the transmission rate for different switch states. These states are determined using the traditional threshold-based method. We also introduce state early detection (SED), which enables the PPFC to control traffic flows more precisely and accurately at critical moments. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides a higher throughput and lower cell loss ratio when compared to the well-known backward explicit congestion notification (BECN). Furthermore, these results also show that PPFC is robust against feedback losses. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The goal of this paper is to provide a feasible and flexible mechanism for variable bit rate (VBR) video transmission and to achieve high network utilization with statistical Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper, we employ a piece-wise constant rate smoothing algorithm to smooth the video coder outputs and propose a simple algorithm to determine the renegotiation schedule for the smoothed streams. In order to transmit video streams with renegotiation-based VER service, we suggest a connection admission control (CAC) based on Chernoff bound using a simple yet quite accurate "binomial" traffic model. The experimental results show that our proposed method provides an easy and robust mechanism to support real-time video transmission in both homogeneous and heterogeneous connection environments.
