New ultra-wideband high-order Marchand baluns with one microstrip unbalanced port and two microstrip balanced ports are proposed in this paper. The proposed Marchand baluns are synthesized based on an S-plane high-pass prototype using the Richards' transformation. The responses of the synthesized high-order Marchand baluns are exactly predicted at all real frequencies. All circuit elements are commensurate, which means the electrical lengths of all transmission line elements are a quarter-wavelength long at the center frequency. Two fifth-order Marchand baluns with reflection coefficients of -20.53 and -21.71 dB corresponding to 131% and 152% bandwidth, respectively, are synthesized and realized using the combinations of microstrip lines, slotlines, and coplanar striplines. Simulated and measured results are presented.

A single-ended wideband downeonversion Gilbert micromixer is demonstrated in this paper using 0.35-um SiGe BiCMOS technology. Because of the wideband matching property of the micromixer, it can perform broad frequency translation. The TIA is utilized in the IF stage while a broadband Marchand balun is employed not only to generate differential LO signals but also to reserve the wideband operation of the mixer. This singleended wideband mixer has the conversion gain of 15 dB, IP(1dB) of 17 dBm, and IIP(3) of -6.5 dBm and works from 3.5 to 14.5 GHz. The input return loss is below -14 dB and the chip size is 1x1 mm(2).

A single-ended wideband downconversion Gilbert micromixer is demonstrated in this paper using 0.35-mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology. A transimpedance amplifier with resistive feedback is utilized in the IF stage while a broadband Marchand balun is employed to generate wideband differential local oscillator signals. The planar Marchand balun topology employed in this paper can generate truly balanced signals even in the presence of the lossy low-resistivity (similar to 10 Omega (.) cm) silicon substrate. A systematic approach to measure the frequency response of each individual stage in a Gilbert mixer is developed in this paper. This single-ended wideband mixer has the conversion gain of 15 dB, IP1dB of -19 dBm, IIP3 of -7 dBm, and the noise figure of 13 dB. The mixer works from 3.5 to 14.5 GHz.

A K-band sub-harmonically pumped resistive mixer is demonstrated using standard 0.13 mu m CMOS technology. A miniature Marchand Balun is integrated with the resistive mixer to generate equal amplitude and out-of-phase signals for mixer's local oscillation (LO) port directly on the lossy silicon substrate. The sub-harmonic resistive mixer with the integrated Marchand balun has conversion loss of 11-12 dB at f(IF) = 100 MHz and P-LO = 7 dBm for RF frequencies from 18 to 26 GHz. The LO-RF and LO-IF isolations are approximately 30 and 33 dB, respectively.

A 5.7 GHz I/Q downconversion mixer is demonstrated in this letter using 0.35 mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology. A quarter-wavelength coupled line and two center-tapped transformers are utilized to generate differential quadrature LO signals. A miniaturized Marchand balun is placed before the common-base-configured RF input stage of each I/Q Gilbert mixer to generate balanced RF signals. All the reactive passive elements are placed directly on the standard silicon substrate. The 5.7 GHz I/Q downconverter achieves 7 dB conversion gain, -26 dBm IP1dB, and -18 dBm IIP3 at the power consumption of 3.875 mW and 2.5 V supply voltage.

A 15-GHz high-isolation sub-harmonic mixer (SHM) with delay compensation is demonstrated in this letter using 0.35 mu m SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology. The proposed SHM consisting of two parallel stacked-LO mixer cores with opposite LO I/Q inputs substantially improves port-to-port isolation. A mathematical analysis regarding the isolation properties is also included in this letter. Further, a conventional stacked-LO SHM (w/o compensation) is also implemented with the same device sizes and bias conditions for a fair comparison. SHMs w/ and w/o compensation have similar conversion gain of 9/10 dB and noise figure of 14/13.5 dB when f(LO) = 7.5 GHz. However, the delay compensation technique improves the 2LO-RF/IF isolation by 34/35 dB, the LO-RF/IF isolation by 8/9 dB, and the RF-IF isolation by 22 dB.

A wide-IF-band transistor mixer has been designed using a 0.13-mu m RF-CMOS process where its RF frequency is 8.7-17.4 GHz, local oscillator (LO) fixed at 17.4 GHz, and IF up to 8.7 GHz. Proper layout arrangement for the Marchand balun has been discussed and then implemented; the output amplitude and phase imbalance are less than 0.5 dB and 1 degrees measured in the RF bandwidth. Related theories for the core mixing circuit are explored extensively and verified through simulation; broad bandwidth of the resistive double-balanced mixer is then confirmed in the IF aspect. The designed mixer has more than 10-dB conversion gain, matched RF, IF, and LO ports, and good port isolation over the intended wide bandwidth. The input-referred P1 dB is -17.5 dBm at 9 GHz and -16 dBm at 13 GHz. The third-order input intercept point is -6 dBm at 9 GHz and -5 dBm at 13 GHz. The noise figure is 7 dB at 9 GHz and 12.6 dB at 13 GHz. The power consumption is 40 mW for this 1.3-mm(2) mixer chip.
