This paper presents a generic electronic payment model which is intended for a multi-merchant transaction, in which more than one merchant (the retailer, multiple resellers and content providers) are involved in the distribution of electronic contents. With our payment model, every involved merchant will be notified to verify the license information of a content on the settlement day before the customer actually pays for his purchase. Thus, piracy can be discouraged, intellectual property rights of electronic contents can be protected. Each of the involved merchants can obtain his own deserved share of the customer's payment in accordance with their union agreement on this content. As examples to demonstrate the applications of our generic payment model, two well-known payment systems are enhanced herein, based on our payment model.

Describes a novel Internet auction model achieving verifiable fairness, a requirement aimed at enhancing the trust of bidders in auctioneers. Distrust in remote auctioneers prevents bidders from participating in Internet auctioning. According to proposed survey reports, this study presents four characteristics that render the Internet untrustworthy for bidders. These intrinsic properties suggest that auction sites not only follow auction policies, but provide customers with evidence validating that the policies are applied fairly. Evidence of verifiable fairness provides bidders with a basis for confidence in Internet auctions. Cryptographic techniques are also applied herein to establish a novel auction model with evidence to manifest and verify every step of the auctioneer. Analysis results demonstrate that the proposed model satisfies various requirements regarding fairness and privacy. Moreover, in the proposed model, the losing bids remain sealed.

The Greater China region (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) has more than 1.2 billion people, about one fifth of the world's total population. This incredibly large market continues to modernize rapidly, and over the last five years, the region has maintained a very high economic growth rate in comparison to the rest of the world. The combination of market size and economic growth makes Greater China the most promising place in the world for Internet products and services. China, Taiwan and Hong Kong recognize the opportunities and via public and private initiatives are investing in the development of information technology (IT) and the Internet infrastructure. This paper outlines the key electronic commerce (EC) trends and events in the region. Further, the research analyzes the current impediments to Internet commerce in China. Taiwan and Hong Kong and provides strategy and directions for the region's EC development.

Two revisions of the original Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) protocol are proposed to conceal cardholders' identities in the electronic marketplace in which cardholders' trust for banks can be reduced to a minimum. Constrained by being extensions of the existing card payment networks to the Internet, most on-line credit card payment schemes in use or proposed in recent papers assume the sensitive card information could be disclosed to all the participating banks. The assumption used to work well in traditional credit card payments before. However, negative impacts such as banking scandals, closure programs due to poor management, and security problems with Internet banking are all undermining cardholders' trust in banks. The issuer is the trusted bank selected by the cardholder, but the acquirer is not. To reveal the cardholder's sensitive card information to every possible acquirer implies potential risk. Based on the need-to-know principle, the two revisions are proposed to relax the assumption mentioned above. In our solutions, the sensitive card information is well protected along the way and can be extracted only by the issuer. A cardholder needs only to select a trustworthy issuer, instead of worrying about the possible breakdowns of every involved acquirer. The cost to achieve our more. secure schemes demands only minor information modifications on the legacy system. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Purpose - To determine the status of internet and e-commerce adoption by the Taiwan semiconductor industry, the research is designed to help government and enterprise in formulating strategic plans and making resource allocation decisions. Design/methodology/approach - Using the three-level model of internet commerce adoption (MICA), a survey of 287 companies and web sites was designed. Semiconductor firms were placed into five categories: integrated circuit (IC) design, manufacturing, packaging, IC testing, and peripheral device manufacturing. Findings - The MICA model shows the internet adoption ratio for semiconductor firms as 82.6 percent, significantly higher than the electronics and electrical machinery industry sector (56.5 percent). The IC manufacturing and packaging segment are in the processing stage, the final stage of development for the MICA model. One-third of the IC testing industry segment falls into the provision stage, and 36.1 percent web sites are in the processing stage. The IC design and peripherals industrial segments are located in the provision stage. Practical implications - The IC manufacturing segment is conducting more financial transactions than the other segments - a result that matches earlier research showing that larger companies are most likely to implement e-business applications. Many enterprises in the industry are lagging with the adoption of the internet indicating a need for education and training. Originality/value - This benchmark study provides a framework for evaluating the internet adoption status of semiconductor and other high technology firms. The MICA model is demonstrated to be suitable for evaluating the different stages of internet adoption.

Purpose - To explore the factors affecting continuity of cooperative electronic supply chain relationships in Taiwanese motor industry. Design/methodology/approach - This study has developed a research framework that integrates the three perspectives of resource dependence, risk perception, and relationship marketing to identify the factors affecting the continuity of a cooperative electronic supply chain. After constructing a structural equation model, empirical testing on 851 raw material and spare parts suppliers for the Taiwanese motor industry was conducted. Findings - All path coefficients in the proposed model were statistically significant, and were as hypothesized. Resource dependence, trust, and relationship commitment are positively related to the continuity of the cooperative electronic relationship. Risk perception is negatively related to the continuity of the cooperative electronic relationship. Research limitations/implications - This paper has theoretically developed an extensive set of interrelationships among these variables (resource dependency, perceived risk, trust, relationship commitment, and continuity of cooperative electronic relationships), illustrating their comparative effects on supplier intention to use the internet for on-line transactions. Practical implications - This empirical study provides consistent support for the proposed business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce acceptance model. Given the high explanatory power of the resulting model, it is likely to serve as the basic model for predicting supplier behavior, and the continuity of enhanced understanding of cooperative electronic relationships. Originality/value - Previous studies did not fully address the relevant influential factors related to the continuity of cooperative electronic supply chain relationships or the causal relationships among these factors. The primary contribution of this research is the integration of constructs associated with resources, environmental uncertainty, and relationship marketing, into a coherent model that jointly predicts supplier acceptance of e-commerce.

In electronic commerce web sites, recommender systems are popularly being employed to help customers in selecting suitable products to meet their personal needs. These systems learn about user preferences over time and automatically suggest products that fit the learned model of user preferences. Traditionally, recommendations are provided to customers depending on purchase probability and customers' preferences, without considering the profitability factor for sellers. This study attempts to integrate the profitability factor into the traditional recommender systems. Based on this consideration, we propose two profitability-based recommender systems called CPPRS (Convenience plus Profitability Perspective Recommender System) and HPRS (Hybrid Perspective Recommender System). Moreover, comparisons between our proposed systems (considering both purchase probability and profitability) and traditional systems (emphasizing an individual's preference) are made to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of these systems in terms of recommendation accuracy and/or profit from cross-selling. The experimental results show that the proposed HPRS can increase profit from cross-selling without losing recommendation accuracy. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

MasterCard International and VISA International recently proposed the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) protocol. Constrained by being an extension of the existing card payment networks to the Internet, SET does not satisfy the concern about privacy infringement, in particular, caused by data aggregation. This paper revises SET, guided by the principle of information segregation and hiding. The revision allows cardholders to take part in account reporting, and offers them a credit card surrogate to conceal their credit card identification in the electronic marketplace. The result is a successful counter to privacy infringement in both the small scope of a transaction and the much broader scope of data aggregation. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
