Item type:Item, Electrically Tunable Ophthalmic Lenses for Myopia and Presbyopia Using Liquid Crystals(2014-06-13) ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;交大名義發表光電工程學系In this paper, an electrically tunable-focusing and polarizer-free liquid crystal (LC) lens for ophthalmic lenses is demonstrated. The optical operating principles of the LC lens in a human eye system are introduced and the optical principle of the polarization independent of the double-layered LC lens is investigated. The polarization dependency, image quality and the response time of the double-layered LC lens are measured. The continuously tunable-focusing properties of the LC lenses are more practical in applications for different visional conditions of people. The concept in this paper can also be extensively applied to imaging systems, and projection systems, such as cameras in cell phones, pico projectors, and endoscopes.Item type:Item, Flexible and reflective polarizer-free liquid crystal displays using dye-doped liquid crystal gels(2008) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Yang, Jhih-Ming ;Jeng, Shie-Chang ;Lin, Yan-RungLiao, Chi-ChangA flexible and reflective polarizer-free display using dye-doped liquid crystal (LC) gels is demonstrated. The electro-optical performances of both scattering and absorption based dye-doped LC gels depend on curing temperatures. The dye-doped LC gel shows good reflectance similar to 55%, good contrast ratio similar to 450:1 and fast response similar to 6.5ms at curing temperature 10 degrees C when UV curing intensity is 2.6 mW/cm(2). The EO performance depends on the curing temperature. The hysteresis is independent of sampling time duration. The bending curvature is 21 mm. The response of dye-doped LC gels is faster under bending due to the bending-induced sheared force of polymer networks. The dye-doped LC gels open a new window for trimable electronic papers, decorative displays and switchable curtains.Item type:Item, A Polarizer-Free Electro-Optical Switch Using Dye-Doped Liquid Crystal Gels(2009-12-01) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;Yang, Jhih-Ming ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe demonstrate a polarizer-free electro-optical switch using dye-doped liquid crystal (LC) gels. The mechanism of dye-doped LC gels mainly involves the combination of polymer scattering and dye absorption. However, the domain size of polymer networks, dye concentration, LC concentration, and fabrication process can all affect the phase separation process and thus result in dye-doped LC gels with different electro-optical performance. We have studied experimentally the factors which can affect the dye-doped LC gels. The potential applications for dye-doped LC gels are flexible displays and electrically tunable light shutters.Item type:Item, Eco-Displays: The Color LCD's Without Color Filters and Polarizers(2011-12-01) ;Huang, Yi-Pai ;Lin, Fang-Cheng ;Shieh, Han-Ping D. ;光電工程學系顯示科技研究所The higher and higher power consumption of LCD-TVs is accompanied by an increase in panel size. By eliminating two of the most power hungry optical components: color filters and polarizers, the stencil-field-sequential-color (Stencil-FSC) with RGBW-LED backlight is applied to LCDs with 120-240 Hz field rates to not only efficiently suppress color breakup but also yield an ultra-low average power consumption. The optical power consumption can be reduced to 13% compared to that of current FSC-LCDs. As a result, a 42-in LCD-TV may only require 9 W optical power consumption.Item type:Item, Polarizer-Free Gradient Dye-Doped Liquid Crystal Gels(2009) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Yang, Chih-Ming ;Lo, Chun-Hsiang ;Lin, Yan-RungJeng, Shie-ChangA multi-switch display using gradient dye-doped LC gels which is still polarizer-free, fast response (similar to 10ms in general), and high contrast (similar to 200:1 in general) has demonstrated. By controlling the spatial distribution of the density of polymer networks through fabrication process, gradient dye-doped LC gels can be a multi-switch. The gradient dye-doped LC gel is bright without applied voltage and is dark at a high voltage. It appears the colored pattern when LCs are partially reoriented due to the gradient density of polymer networks. The optical analysis of dye-doped LC gels is also discussed. The potential applications are flexible display and decorative displays.
