YBa2Cu3O7-delta(YBCO) superconducting ring resonators with YBCO ground plane were fabricated. The resonators exhibit a high quality (Q > 10(4)) at 16 It, indicating high potential for applications. In addition, from the analyses of the surface resistance R-s(T) and reactance X-s(T), it was found that the derived London penetration depth lambda(T) - lambda(5 K) displays a linear behavior over a wide range of temperatures. The results suggest that a distinct line node feature in the gap function of a d-wave pairing superconductor may extend to temperatures higher than previously reported. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Dual-mode ring resonator filters are implemented with asymmetric inductive perturbation for creating transmission zeros on both sides of the passband. In analysis, dependence of the resonance modes and the zeros on positions and sizes of both the inductive and capacitive perturbations is investigated. Under certain conditions, the even- and odd-mode frequencies for a capacitively perturbed ring are the same as the odd and even ones, respectively, for a ring with inductive perturbation. Theoretical background is clearly explained how the two transmission zeros are split up from the center frequency. Two dual-mode ring resonator filters are fabricated and measured for demonstration. To obtain a miniaturized circuit area, the 1-lambda ring trace is folded into a double-ring or spiral configuration. The inductive perturbation is chosen as the crossover and implemented by a short high-impedance coplanar waveguide interconnection in the ground plane of the microstrip. Measurement results show good agreement with the simulation responses.

A periodic stepped-impedance ring resonator (PSIRR) is proposed to design dual-mode bandpass filters with a miniaturized area and desirable upper stopband characteristics. Design parameters of a PSIRR include impedance ratio R of the hi-Z to low-Z sections, their lengths, and number of impedance steps 2N. The resonant characteristics of PSIRRs with various N and R values are investigated by both the transmission-line theory and electromagnetic simulation. Proper choice of the above parameters leads to an optimal reduction of circuit area and extension of upper rejection bandwidth. Two extra transmission zeros exist in the upper stopband and are tunable via changing the arm lengths of the line-to-ring coupling structure. Realized by the standard microstrip technology, the dual-mode PSIRR bandpass filter has not only the first spurious response at higher than 3.7 x the passband frequency, but also, an area reduction of better than 60% against a conventional ring filter. Experimental results of several fabricated circuits validate the analysis and theoretical prediction.

Quadruple-mode coupled-ring resonator is used to design quasi-elliptic function bandpass filters (BPFs) with a relatively wide bandwidth. The resonator consists of a pair of coupled rings with two open stubs symmetrically tapped to the inner ring. The stubs are used to move a transmission zero near the center frequency to lower transition band. It is believed that it is the first ring resonator BPF-based on the coupled-ring to create four transmission poles and four transmission zeros. Two filters with relative bandwidths of 10% and 15% are fabricated and measured. Good agreement between simulation and measurement is obtained.

High-performance passive RF devices were fabricated on insulating plastic substrates. These passive devices included inductors, low-loss coplanar waveguide (CPW) and microstrip transmission lines, 30 GHz narrow-band filters, and 25 GHz CPW ring resonators. The characteristics of these devices agreed well with those of ideal devices, as predicted by electromagnetic simulations.
