Item type:Item, Calibrating parameters and formulas for process-level energy consumption profiling in smartphones(2014-09-01) ;Lin, Ying-Dar ;Rattagan, Ekarat ;Lai, Yuan-Cheng ;Chang, Li-PinYo, Yun-ChienBattery-powered mobile devices substantially constrain energy resources. Process-level energy profiling tools can identify the most energy-consuming process and detail the energy usage of hardware components. With the help of energy profiling tools, programmers can fine-tune the energy consumption of processes to extend battery lifetime. However, profiling tools are highly dependent on hardware and must be calibrated for each hardware platform. Furthermore, for any new hardware components, new energy estimation formulas must be created. To solve these two problems regarding off-the-shelf products, this work proposes a two-phase calibrating approach. The first phase reconstructs the power table with a power meter, while the second creates new energy estimation formulas using linear regression analysis. The accuracy of the calibrated tool was evaluated in five scenarios and its error ratio is proven to be below 10%, occasionally less than 5%. Hence, this proposed approach to energy consumption profiling represents a major step in off-the-shelf devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Time profiling on Android devices involves three unique constraints: (1) the execution flow of a scenario invokes multiple software layers, (2) these software layers are implemented in different programming languages, and (3) log space is limited. To compensate for the first and second constraints, we assumed a staged approach using different profiling tools applied to different layers and programming languages. As for the last constraint and to avoid generating enormous quantities of irrelevant log data, we began profiling scenarios from an individual module, and then iteratively profiled an increased number of modules and layers, and finally consolidated the logs from different layers to identify bottlenecks. Because of this iteration, we called this approach a staged iterative instrumentation approach. To analyze the time required to boot the devices, we conducted experiments using off-the-shelf Android products. We determined that 72% of the booting time was spent initializing the user-space environment, with 44.4% and 39.2% required to start Android services and managers, and preload Java classes and resources, respectively. Results from analyzing browsing performance indicate that networking is the most significant factor, accounting for at least 90% of the delay in browsing. With regard to online streaming, networking and decoding technologies are two most important factors occupying 77% of the time required to prepare a 22 MB video file over a Wi-Fi connection. Furthermore, the overhead of this approach is low. For example, the overhead of CPU loading is about 5% in the browsing scenario. We believe that this proposed approach to time profiling represents a major step in the optimization and future development of Android-based devices. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This problem becomes more likely in a wireless mesh network (WMN) because WMNs can bridge wired LANs. increasing broadcast traffic and collision probability. Since the network control, routing, and topology maintenance of a WMN highly rely on layer-2 broadcasting, unreliable broadcast algorithms directly destabilize a WMN. Researchers have developed many algorithms for efficient and reliable broadcast in multi-hop wireless networks. However, real-world systems rarely verify or compare these approaches, especially in a WMN. This paper examines six representative broadcast algorithms: simple flooding, dynamic probabilistic, efficient counter-based broadcast, scalable broadcast, domain pruning, and connected-dominating-set based algorithms. This study addresses both common and algorithm-specific implementation in a real-world IEEE 802.11s WMN testbed. Experiments under various topologies and packet lengths reveal the reliability, forwarding ratio, and efficiency of these six algorithms. Quantitative survey results indicate that the scalable broadcast algorithm possesses the best reliability due to its lower collision probability. The domain-pruning algorithm is the most efficient algorithm when considering both reliability and the forwarding ratio. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Conventional mesh deployment focuses on the outdoor environment, which regards the wMNs as backbone networks. This study deploys and measures indoor IEEE 802.11s mesh networks to extend WLAN capabilities with extensive experiment configurations. The testbed is constructed in a laboratory and a field crossing three floors of a building. Disagreeing with previous research, the results of this study indicate that RTS/CTS can improve throughput by up to 87.5%. Moreover, compared with the IEEE 802.11b/g, 802.11n achieves better fairness for multi-stream or multi-hop communications. Experimental results also suggest that a longer beacon interval, e.g. 500 ms, can improve channel efficiency for a denser deployment. On the other hand, sparser deployments should use a shorter beacon interval, e.g. 100 ms, to enhance link stability. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The IEEE 802.11s standard defines a wireless LAN mesh using the IEEE 802.11 medium access control and physical layers, and is one of the most active standards with increasing commercial opportunities. This study presents the design and development of a WLAN mesh system conforming to the latest IEEE 802.11s draft amendment. Without costly hardware modifications, the proposed solution is a pure software extension for commercial off-the-shelf WLAN chipsets. This study constructs an experimental testbed, and evaluates issues such as the transmission reliability of mesh broadcast-type control messages and multichannel transmissions. Experimental results demonstrate that the delivery of mesh broadcast-type control messages, such as routing construction frames, using the multiple acknowledged unicast scheme improves mesh stability from an 86 to a 98 percent success ratio in a 16-node grid. Transmitting packets using a single radio interface switching between multiple channels reduces inter-flow interference and doubles the throughput in our testbed.
