Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) incorporating the copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)/N,N-'-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N-'-diphenyl-1,1(')-biphenyl-4,4(')-diamine composite hole transport layer have been fabricated. Under optimal condition, the highly efficient sky-blue OLED based on the aminosubstituted distyrylarylene fluorescent dye, doped in the stable diphenyanthracene blue host achieved a luminance efficiency of 16.2 cd/A with a Commission Internationale d' Eclairage (CIE)(x,y) color coordinate of [0.15, 0.29] at 6.4 V (20 mA/cm(2)) and an external quantum efficiency of 8.7%. An effective algorithm is proposed for solving the structure of thin-lens cemented triplets which consist of three different glass types and have the given target values of power, primary spherical aberration, coma and longitudinal chromatic aberration. The formulae for the aberrations are combined with the power formula into a fifth-order polynomial equation in one variable, whose roots can all be solved by a combination of numerical and algebraic methods.

A simple algebraic algorithm is proposed as a computational tool for the thin-lens design of a triplet which consists of a singlet and a cemented doublet. The triplet is required to yield specified amounts of lens power, primary spherical aberration, central coma, longitudinal chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum. The three element powers of the triplet are first obtained by solving the simultaneous linear equations of the total lens power, longitudinal chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum. A quadratic equation is obtained by combining the equations of spherical aberration and central coma, and the lens shapes are then obtained by solving this quadratic equation. The solving process is purely algebraic and is therefore easy to calculate and guarantees that all the solutions can be found.

The transient combustion characteristics of a droplet suddenly exposed to the envelope flames in an atmospheric environment are studied numerically. Combustion can be divided into a droplet heating-up and a constant-droplet-temperature burning. The naturally-convective flow is not known a priori, but provided as part of the solution. During the heating-up stage, the temperature and evaporation rate of droplet increase sharply, and the square of diameter decreases slightly as time proceeds. In the following stage, the droplet temperature remains constant, the evaporation rate and droplet diameter decrease with time. The flowfield of natural convection is also presented to demonstrate its interaction with the flame and the transient process. Finally, the fuel accumulation phenomenon is identified and it results in an reduction of evaporation constant.

In the as-quenched condition, the microstructure of the Cu-14.2Al-15.0Ni alloy was D0(3) phase containing extremely fine L-J precipitates. Since both fine D0(3) domains with a/2(100) anti-phase boundaries (APBs) and small B2 domains with a/4(111) APBs could be observed, the D0(3) phase existing in the as-quenched alloy should be formed by an A2 --> B2 --> D0(3) continuous ordering transition during quenching. It is worthwhile to note that the a/4(111) APBs have never been observed by other workers in the Cu-Al-Ni ternary alloys before. When the as-quenched alloy was aged at temperatures ranging from 400 to 1000 degreesC for longer times, the phase transformation sequence as the aging temperature increased was found to be (alpha + B2 precipitate) --> (B2 + B2 precipitate) --> B2 --> A2. This transformation has also never been observed by other workers in the Cu-Al-Ni ternary alloys before. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, a pilot plant combined ozonation with sand filtration is established. Wastewater from the secondary effluent was taken as the sample for looking into the feasibility of domestic wastewater recovery and recycling. At the beginning, a series of hydraulic analysis and ozone transfer tests was conducted in the bubble column reactor. From these tests, it was found that when the gas flow is controlled to within 0.2similar to1.0 L/min and liquid flow within 0.5similar to2.5 L/min, using series connected mixing tank model for our calculation, the result J (CSTR) is 1similar to2. From the ozone transfer test it is known that the smaller the gas flow, the better the transfer rate, and the same pattern occurs on ozone gas concentration. After sand filtration and ozone treatment, the G/L ratio within the ozone column reactor can be maintained within 0.2similar to0.4 and the ozone dosage within 8similar to12 mg/L. The removal rate for coliform bacillus, BOD, turbidity and color is 99.96%, 62.2%, 89.6% and 67% respectively. After ozonation treatment, coliform bacillus content can be controlled under 10 CFU/mL, BOD under 10mg/L, turbidity within 2.0similar to2.5 (NTU), and color within 10.3similar to13.7 degree. The recycled water is almost colorless and odorless, and is capable of reaching the reference standard for recycled water.

We studied both numerically and experimentally the transverse modes near degenerate resonator configurations such as g(1)g(2) = 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 in a simple plano-concave Nd:YVO4 laser with a small pump size. We found that there are stationary modes that show an additional beam waist besides the well-known waist on the flat mirror end near 9 19 2 = 1/4, 3/4. When the specific modes of the three degeneracies propagate through a lens, they are capable of exhibiting multiple beam waists. The multibeam-waist mode possesses a small waist size without a ring structure in the near field on the flat mirror end; nevertheless, it has a far-field pattern with many concentric rings. The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, by simultaneously considering the wavelike and the raylike character of the multibeam-waist mode, we found that it can be represented as a superposition of N consecutive round-trip electric fields of period-N solution in the degenerate empty cavity, where N = 2 for g(1)g(2) = 1/2 and N = 3 for g(1)g(2) 1/4, 3/4.
