Item type:Item, Reducing the Impact of Nonlinear Distortion in DML-Based OFDM Transmission by Frequency Gap(2018-12-01) ;Hong-Minh Nguyen ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Chuang, Chun-Yen ;Chen, JyehongTaga, HidenoriThis paper demonstrates a novel approach to reducing in-band nonlinear distortion in DML-based OFDM transmission by introducing a frequency gap between the optical carrier and signal band. This scheme greatly increases tolerance to nonlinear distortion caused by the interaction between laser chirp and chromatic dispersion. Tuning the frequency gap between 2 to 5 GHz (in accordance with the transmission distance) makes it possible to mitigate a considerable proportion of dispersion-induced nonlinear distortion. Experiment results revealed that the proposed scheme can increase the achievable data rate by up to 136%, compared to conventional OFDM over 300 km of dispersion-uncompensated standard single mode fiber. Following transmission over more than 200 km, the proposed modulation scheme also outperforms conventional OFDM incorporating with a Volterra equalizer by up to 24%. We also conducted optimization of DML bias current and driving voltage. Our results show that operating at high bias and driving voltage can greatly improve data rates following the mitigation of distortion via gapped OFDM.Item type:Item, Analysis of Nonlinear Distortion and SSII Cancellation in EAM-Based IMDD OFDM Transmission(2015-07-15) ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Cheng, Hsuan-Lin ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Chen, Yu-ChaoChu, Hsuan-HaoIn terms of second-order nonlinearity, nonlinear distortion in an EAM-based IMDD OFDM system is deterministically modeled as subcarrier-to-subcarrier intermixing interference ( SSII), such that DSP-based nonlinear compensation can be provided by decision-aided SSII cancellation at the receiver. The effectiveness of SSII cancellation heavily relies on the accuracy of SSII calculation, which is determined mainly by the modulation model adopted. This study made comprehensive comparisons of three small-signal models (constant-chirp, dynamic-chirp, and nonlinear-E/O models). We then combined theory and experiment results to examine the characteristics of SSII estimation and cancellation using various models, such as SSII spectra, regression coefficients, and correlation coefficients between the SSII and the total received errors, as well as the relationship between improvements in performance and the correlation coefficient. The nonlinear-E/O model is the most comprehensive, and as a result presents the flattest regression coefficient and highest correlation coefficient, which results in the most pronounced improvement in performance.Item type:Item, Optimization of mode numbers of VCSELs for small-cell backhaul applications(2015-07-15) ;Lu, I-Cheng ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Shi, Jin-Wei ;Chen, Hsing-YuTsai, Sheng-FanThis paper reports optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission using 850 nm Zn-diffusion Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and multimode fiber (MMF) for small-cell backhaul applications. We also investigated the influence of side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) on the performance of OFDM modulation. By further optimizing the Zn-diffusion conditions and oxide aperture size, a high-power (6.7 mW) SM (SMSR > 30 dB) VCSEL is demonstrated. By using OFDM modulation and bit-loading algorithm, record-high BRDP (91 Gb/s km) at 26 Gb/s transmission under FEC threshold (bit error rate (BER) < 3.8 x 10(-3)) across 3.5 km OM4 fiber has been successfully demonstrated. In addition, based on the proposed comprehensive transmission model, the subcarrier-to-subcarrier intermixing interference (SSII) cancellation scheme is applied to simultaneously eliminate the nonlinear distortions caused by the interplay among dispersion, the SPM effect, and the modulator-induced nonlinearity and chirp. Thanks to the high launch power and SSII cancellation, 40 and 50 Gbps 60 km OFDM transmission is successfully demonstrated to show 33 and 28 dB loss budgets, respectively, without an inline amplifier or preamplifier. Hence, by employing a 10 GHz electro-absorption modulator and PIN detector, the proposed LR-PON can economically support 64 or 32 optical network users with a capacity of 50 or 40 Gbps.Item type:Item, Ultra-High Data-Rate 60 GHz Radio-Over-Fiber Systems Employing Optical Frequency Multiplication and OFDM Formats(2010-08-15) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Chen, Jyehong ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Jiang, Wen-JrChi, SienThe increasing demand for wireless video-based interactive and multimedia data services explains why 60-GHz millimeter-wave wireless system is a promising candidate to provide multi-gigabit-per-second wireless services. While attempting to generate and transmit 60 GHz signals in a wireless system cost effectively and increase the spectral efficiency to facilitate multi-gigabit-per-second services, this work reviews three radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on optical frequency multiplication (up to 6 times) to reduce the bandwidth requirement of optical transmitters. Additionally, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with multi-level modulation formats (16 QAM) are utilized to achieve an ultrahigh data rate of 28 Gbps within the 7-GHz license-free band and compensate for an uneven frequency response of 60-GHz RoF systems. Negligible power penalty following 25-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission is observed, capable of significantly extending the service range to various applications within a building or campus.
