An array of ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires (NW) for the highly efficient absorption of light and carrier collection is developed for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting. The oriented NW architecture favors physical matching, providing a direct electron conduction pathway and reducing the diffusion length of photogenerated holes. This work involves a combination of spectral imaging, spectromicroscopy and in situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy; spectra are obtained under operando conditions. Direct investigation of oriented nanowires using polarization-dependent x-ray spectromicroscopy enables the determination of the relationship between anisotropic electronic orbitals and charge carrier water-splitting efficiency. The results of O K-edge STXM demonstrated that the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW exhibits strong anisotropy and thus provides higher electron-hole transport efficiency than bare ZnO. In situ XAS revealed that interfacial charge transfer between Fe 3d and Zn 4p states enhances the photoelectrochemical reaction in the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW. The photogenerated electrons of Fe2O3 are transferred from Fe 3d states to the Zn 4p state under photoelectrochemical conditions.

We used time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy to compare the properties of magnetic polarons in two related, spatially indirect, II-VI epitaxially grown quantum dot systems. In sample A (ZnMnTe/ZnSe), the photoexcited holes are confined in the magnetic ZnMnTe quantum dots (QDs), while the electrons remain in the surrounding non-magnetic ZnSe matrix. In sample B (ZnTe/ZnMnSe) on the other hand, the holes are confined in the non-magnetic ZnTe QDs and the electrons move in the magnetic ZnMnSe matrix. The magnetic polaron formation energies, E-MP, in these samples were measured from the temporal red-shift of the excitonic emission peak. The magnetic polarons in the two samples exhibit distinct characteristics. In sample A, the magnetic polaron is strongly bound with E-MP = 35 meV. Furthermore, E-MP has unconventionally weak dependence of on both temperature T and magnetic field B-appl. In contrast, magnetic polarons in sample B show conventional characteristics with E-MP decreasing with increasing temperature and increasing external magnetic field. We attribute the difference in magnetic polaron properties between the two types of QDs to the difference in the location of the Mn ions in the respective structures.

In this report, various organic Alq3 amorphous layers are prepared by vacuum deposition at different substrate temperatures T-sub (from 30 to 180 degrees C). The surface morphology, structural information, electrical and optical properties of these as-deposited layers are investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, J-E curves, and photoluminescence studies, respectively. Furthermore, a temperature dependence of dark electrical conductivity sigma(T) deduced from J-E curves of these organic amorphous layers is presented. Finally, effects from T-sub on the physical properties of these organic Alq3 amorphous layers are discussed and a model based on a thermal interconversion between Alq3 isomers is proposed to explain these experimental results.

In this work, the carrier dynamics in Zn1-xCdxO thin films with different Cd contents grown by molecular beam epitaxy system have been investigated using photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. The carrier lifetime can be estimated from the PL decay curve fitted by triple exponential function. The emission energy dependence and temperature dependence of the PL decay time indicate that carrier localization dominate the luminescence mechanism of the ZnCdO alloy semiconductor.

Spatially-resolved electroluminescence (EL) images in the triple junction InGaP/InGaAs/Ge solar cell have been investigated to demonstrate the subcell coupling effect. Upon irradiating the infrared light with an energy below bandgap of the active layer in the top subcell, but above that in the middle subcell, the EL of the top subcell quenches. By analysis of EL intensity as a function of irradiation level, it is found that the coupled p-n junction structure and the photovoltaic effect are responsible for the observed EL quenching. With optical coupling and photoswitching effects in the multi-junction diode, a concept of infrared image sensors is proposed. (C)2012 Optical Society of America

Both ensemble and single-molecule measurements were performed to explore the fluorescence properties of Au nanoclusters (NCs). Photoinduced fluorescence enhancement was observed for ensemble NCs in solution, but photobleaching was found at ambient environments. At the single-molecule level, fluorescence blinking and single-step photobleaching were observed. Furthermore, their time-resolved fluorescence shows a single exponential decay with a lifetime of similar to 7 ns and is insensitive to changes in fluorescence intensity. The lifetime distribution is more homogeneous within ensemble Au NCs as compared to CdSe QDs. Therefore, Au NCs have potential applications as nontoxic fluorescent labels for lifetime-based imaging microscopy. However, their low quantum yields and poor photostability are disadvantageous factors, which require further improvement. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

This study elucidates the theory of phonon-induced decoherence of a double dot charge qubit that is embedded inside a suspended semiconductor slab. The influences of the lattice temperature, width of the slab, and positions of the dots on the decoherence are analyzed. Numerical results indicate that the decoherence in the slab system is weaker than that in a bulk environment. In particular, the decoherence is markedly suppressed by the inhibition of the electron-phonon coupling. Such a system with low decoherence may be useful for manipulating the qubits.

A green and one-step synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) has been implemented using pulsed laser ablation from aqueous graphene. The synthesized GQDs are able to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) of GaAs epilayers after depositing them on the GaAs surface. An enhancement of PL intensity of a factor of 2.8 has been reached at a GQD concentration of 1.12 mg ml(-1). On the basis of the PL dynamics, the PL enhancement in GaAs is interpreted by the carrier transfer from GQDs to GaAs due to the work function difference between them.

Kohlrausch's stretched exponential law correlates well with the photoluminescence (PL) decay profiles of ZnSe1-xTex. As the Te concentration increases, the stretching exponent beta initially declines and then monotonically increases. This result can be understood using the hopping-transport and energy transfer model. The increase in the number of isoelectronic Te localized traps can reduce the PL decay rate and increase the linewidth, whereas the hybridization of the Te localized states with the valence-band edge states causes a reduction in both the lifetime and linewidth.

We present a systematic study of temperature-dependent reflectance (R) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements on ZnMnO films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. For the first time, the three free-exciton transitions FXA (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(u)(7v)), FXB (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(9v)), and FXC (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(l)(7v)) and the longitudinal-optical phonon replicas of FXB and FXC of ZnMnO films have been clearly observed in the R spectra. The parameters describing the activation energy and the temperature dependence of the transition energy and broadening have been extracted by fitting the experimental R and PL spectra. The spectral data of ZnMnO films not only show the deterioration of crystalline quality with increasing Mn composition fraction but also indicate the Mn clustering caused by Mn atom segregation.
