In the paper, we report and exhibit a C-band erbium-doped fiber (EDF) based gain medium laser together with a 5 m unpumped EDF saturable absorber (SA) to attain broadly wavelength-selectable range and single-longitudinal-mode operation. Here, the whole tunability range of 1521.0 to 1601.0 nm (C plus L bands) can be accomplished by the designed EDF laser scheme. The output power and optical signal-to-noise ratio of the EDF laser are detected between -10.9 and 2.3 dBm and 33.1 and 45.1 dB/0.06 nm, respectively. In addition, the achievable SLM operation range runs from 1521.0 to 1581.0 nm due to the absorption limit of the EDF SA. The detected output stability and Lorentzian linewidth are also experimentally considered and significantly discussed.

Mode-locked fiber lasers have many important applications in science and engineering. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a 110 GHz high repetition rate mode-locked fiber laser using a silicon-based micro-ring resonator (SMRR) to act as an intra-cavity optical comb filter, as well as an optical nonlinear element. No electrical bias for the SMRR is required to reduce free carrier absorption. The SMRR has a free spectral range of 0.88 nm, enforcing laser mode-locking at the 110 GHz high rate. The optical nonlinearity of the SMRR also supports the dissipative four-wave mixing effect for generating the mode-locked optical pulse trains. The mode-locked pulse-width, optical 3 dB spectral bandwidth and the time-bandwidth product (TBP) are experimentally measured under different pump currents to the erbium-doped fiber-amplifier module inside the laser cavity. The relative intensity noise and the line-width of the proposed laser are also evaluated. Furthermore, a long-term monitoring is performed. The experimental results show that the optical pulse train generated by the SMRR-based mode-locked fiber laser has a 2.6 ps pulse-width (pump current at 400 mA) at a 110 GHz high repetition rate, narrow line-width (1 kHz), high stability (under observation of an hour), and nearly Gaussian transform-limited (TBP is 0.455).

A stable and selectable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser configuration with single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. In the proposed laser scheme, a proper cavity loss is utilized for significant suppression of the side mode. In the experiment, the different coupling ratios required to produce various cavity losses in the proposed fiber laser are analyzed. Here, to reach the wavelength selection, several fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and an optical tunable bandpass filter (OTBF) in the C-band range are employed for demonstration. In addition, the output performance with respect to stability and SLM in the proposed EDF ring laser are also investigated simultaneously.

In this work, we propose and demonstrate a switchable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser with stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output. Here, a dual-ring (DR) structure with an unpumped EDF of 2 m is designed to achieve SLM oscillation. Five fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are applied in the laser cavity serving as the reflective element to generate different dual-wavelength outputs. In the measurement, six sets of generated dual-wavelengths with various mode-spacing (Delta lambda) can be achieved via the five FBGs. Additionally, the stability performance of the proposed EDF DR laser is also demonstrated.

In this work, we propose and investigate an intelligent fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor system in which the proposed stabilized and wavelength-tunable single-longitudinal-mode erbium-doped fiber laser can improve the sensing accuracy of wavelength-division-multiplexing multiple FBG sensors in a longer fiber transmission distance. Moreover, we also demonstrate the proposed sensor architecture to enhance the FBG capacity for sensing strain and temperature, simultaneously.

In this demonstration, a stable and tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser with multiple-ring configuration is proposed and investigated. The proposed compound-ring structure can create different free spectrum ranges (FSRs) to result in the modefilter effect based on the Vernier effect for suppressing the other modes. Additionally, the output stabilization of power and wavelength in the proposed EDF multiple-ring laser are also discussed.

To achieve a stable and selectable C-band erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser with single-longitudinal-mode output, a multiple ring architecture is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. In this work, we design a passively quadruple-ring structure in the cavity of an EDF laser to produce a Vernier effect with a mode filter for suppressing the multimode spikes significantly. In addition, the output performance and stability of the proposed EDF ring laser are discussed.

In this paper, a stable and wavelength-switchable silicon-photonic erbium-doped fiber (EDF) triple-ring laser is proposed and demonstrated. In the experiment, the integration of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based grating coupler and silicon-micro-ring-resonator (SMRR) are coupled and connected to the proposed EDF triple-ring laser for generating wavelength. Here, the output wavelength can be adjusted in a wavelength range of 1529.8 -1561.8 nm with a 2.0 nm tuning step according to the free spectrum range (FSR) of the SMRR. Moreover, the stability performance of the output power and wavelength are also discussed and analyzed.

In this work, we propose and demonstrate a stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) fiber laser with narrow line-width by using an integrated silicon-on-insulator micro-ring resonator (SOI MRR) and two subsidiary fiber rings for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The laser is tunable over the wavelength range from 1546 to 1570 nm, with only step tuning of 2 nm steps. A maximum 49 dB side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) can be achieved. The compact SOI MRR provides a large free-spectral-range (FSR), while the subsidiary rings provide Vernier effect producing a single lasing mode. The FSR of the SOI MRR can be very large and controllable (since it is easy to fabricate small SOI MRR when compared with making small fiber-rings) using the complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compactable SOI fabrication processes. In our proposed laser, the measured single side-band (SSB) spectrum shows that the densely spaced longitudinal modes can be significantly suppressed to achieve SLM. The laser linewidth is only 3.5 kHz measured by using the self-heterodyne method. 30 min stability evaluation in terms of lasing wavelength and optical power is performed; showing the optical wavelength and power are both very stable, with fluctuations of only 0.02 nm and 0.8 dB, respectively.

In this investigation, a stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber (EDF) multiring laser by utilizing fiber Bragg grating is proposed and investigated. Here, to accomplish a SLM output, the multiring cavity of the proposed EDF laser is employed for suppressing the densely multilongitudinal mode. Hence, the output powers and wavelengths of the proposed dual-wavelength EDF laser are 7.0 and 6.7 dBm and 1531.72 and 1537.32 nm, respectively. In addition, the maximum output stabilities of the power and wavelength in the proposed laser are also executed and discussed.
