Item type:Item, Gold Nanoparticle-Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites That Enhance the Device Performance of Polymer Solar Cells(2014-01-01) ;Chuang, Ming-Kai ;Chen, Fang-Chung ;Hsu, Chain-Shu ;應用化學系光電工程學系Metal nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxides are promising materials for use in various optoelectronic applications because of their unique plasmonic properties. In this paper, a simple, environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of gold nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxide that can be used to improve the efficiency of organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) is reported. Here, the amino acid glycine is employed as an environmentally friendly reducing reagent for the reduction of gold ions in the graphene oxide solutions. Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy are used to characterize the material properties of the resulting nanomaterials. Furthermore, these nanocomposites are employed as the anode buffer layer in OPVs to trigger surface plasmonic resonance, which improved the efficiency of the OPVs. The results indicate that such nanomaterials appear to have great potential for application in OPVs.Item type:Item, Manufacturing multilayer conjugate polymer optoelectronics device by using buffer layer(2007-05-17) ;Meng, Hsin-Fei ;Horng, Sheng-Fu ;Hsu, Chain-Shu ;Lin, Shi-ChengLiao, Hua-HsienA highly stable, multilayer organic molecular photoelectric element without interlayer miscibility phenomenon during manufacturing process, and a method for producing multilayer organic molecular photoelectric elements with simplified solution process are disclosed.Item type:Item, Effect of electrical operation on the defect states in organic semiconductors(2008-12-01) ;Nguyen, Thien Phap ;Renaud, Cedric ;Huang, Chun Hao ;Lo, Chih-NanLee, Chih-WenWe have investigated the role of the trapping process in degradation mechanisms of poly(9,9- dihexylfluorene- co-N,N-di(9,9- dihexyl- 2- fluorenyl)- N- phenylamine) (PF) based diodes, after aging (at half lifetime) by electrical stress. By using the Charge based Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy, we have determined the trap parameters in PF light emitting devices. The mean activation energies of the traps are in the range 0.13- 0.60 eV from the band edges with capture cross sections of the order of 10(-18) to 10(-20) cm(2). The trap densities are in the range of 10(-16) to 10(-17) cm(-3). Upon aging, no new trap levels have been found indicating that the electrical stress did not create additional defect level in the polymer in contrast to previous investigations on other organic materials, which reported that the degradation of devices in humid atmosphere lead to the onset of new traps acting as recombination centers. Furthermore, aging would not affect uniformly the defect levels in the polymer. Shallow trap states (below 0.3 eV) remain stable, whereas the enhancement in trap density of deeper trap levels (above 0.3 eV) have been observed, suggesting that degradation by electrical stress leads to an increase in density of deep levels.Item type:Item, A High-Mobility Low-Bandgap Copolymer for Efficient Solar Cells(2010-12-15) ;Ding, Ping ;Chu, Cheng-Che ;Liu, Bo ;Peng, BoZou, YingpingA new high-mobility low-bandgap polymer, PBDT-DODTBT, based on benzodithiophene and 5,6-bis(octyloxy)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole has been synthesized through a standard Stille coupling reaction. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and chlorobenzene and has excellent film forming properties. Preliminary studies of the copolymer showed the charge mobility as high as 7.15 x 10(-3) cm(2).V(-1). s(-1) from SCLC measurement. Initial photovoltaic cells based on the composite structure of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDT-DODTBT: (alpha)PC(71)BM (1:2)/Ca/Al showed an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V, a power conversion efficiency of 4.02%, and a short-circuit current of 8.96mA.cm(-2).Item type:Item, Nano Approach Investigation of the Conduction Mechanism in Polyaniline Nanofibers(2011-02-01) ;Lin, Yen-Fu ;Chen, Chien-Hsiang ;Xie, Wen-Jia ;Yang, Sheng-HsiungHsu, Chain-ShuA nanotechnological approach is applied to measurements of the electric field dependence of resistance under a high electric field while in low voltage. With this technique, the conduction mechanism on a mesoscopic scale is explored in a single, nonagglomerated nanofiber. Polyaniline nanofibers are prepared by vigorous mixing of aniline and oxidation agent ammonium persulfate in acid solution. They exhibit a uniform nanoscale morphology rather than agglomeration as that produced via conventional chemical oxidation. The as-synthesized polyaniline nanofibers are doped (dedoped) with a HCl acid (NH(3) base), and their temperature behaviors of resistances follow an exponential function with an exponent of T(-1/2). To measure the conduction mechanism in a single nanofiber, the dieiectrophoresis technique is implemented to position nanofibers on top of two electrodes with a nanogap of 100-600 nm, patterned by electron-beam lithography. After the devices are irradiated by electron beam to reduce contact resistances, their temperature behaviors and electric field dependences are unveiled. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical model of charging energy limited tunneling. Other theoretical models such as Efros-Shklovskii and Mott's one-dimensional hopping conduction are excluded after comparisons and arguments. Through fitting, the size of the conductive grain, separation distance between two grains, and charging energy per grain in a single polyaniline nanofiber are estimated to be about 4.9 nm, 2.8 nm, and 78 meV, respectively. The nanotechnological approach, where the nanogap and the dielectrophoresis technique are used for single nanofiber device fabrication, Is applied for determination of mesoscopic charge transport in a polyaniline conducting polymer.Item type:Item, Surface Plasmonic Effects of Metallic Nanoparticles on the Performance of Polymer Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells(2011-02-01) ;Wu, Jyh-Lih ;Chen, Fang-Chung ;Hsiao, Yu-Sheng ;Chien, Fan-ChingChen, PeilinWe have systematically explored how plasmonic effects influence the characteristics of polymer photovoltaic devices (OPVs) incorporating a blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). We blended gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into the anodic buffer layer to trigger localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which enhanced the performance of the OPVs without dramatically sacrificing their electrical properties. Steady state photoluminescence (PL) measurements revealed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity, which we attribute to the increased light absorption in P3HT Induced by the LSPR. As a result, the rate of generation of excitons was enhanced significantly. Furthermore, dynamic PL measurements revealed that the LSPR notably reduced the lifetime of photogenerated excitons In the active blend, suggesting that interplay between the surface plasmons and excitons facilitated the charge transfer process. This phenomenon reduced the recombination level of geminate excitons and, thereby, Increased the probability of exciton dissociation. Accordingly, both the photocurrents and fill factors of the OPV devices were enhanced significantly. The primary origin of this improved performance was local enhancement of the electromagnetic field surrounding the Au NPs. The power conversion efficiency of the OPV device incorporating the Au NPs improved to 4.24% from a value of 3.57% for the device fabricated without Au NPs.Item type:Item, Porphyrin-Incorporated 2D D-A Polymers with Over 8.5% Polymer Solar Cell Efficiency(2014-08-13) ;Chao, YI-Hsiang ;Jheng, Jyun-Fong ;Wu, Jhong-Sian ;Wu, Kuan-YiPeng, Hsih-HaoItem type:Item, Synthesis of fluorinated terphenyl liquid crystals with 3-propylcyclopentane end group(2014-01-01) ;Lee, Tien-Hsin ;Hsu, Chain-Shu ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryHigh performance liquid crystal (LC) displays require nematic mixtures with low rotational viscosity to reduce the response time and large dielectric anisotropy to reduce the threshold voltage. Furthermore, liquid crystals (LCs) with low melting temperature and high clearing temperature are particularly attractive for automobile and outdoor display applications. In this article, we report a series of new fluorinated terphenyl LCs with 3-alkylcyclopentane end group. The terphenyl mesogen is designed for high Delta n value, and the lateral fluorine atom is used to reduce the melting temperature. In comparison with the terphenyl analogue containing a 4-alkylcyclohexyl end group, discussed in previous works, the obtained LCs show wider nematic temperature range and smaller rotational viscosity because 3-alkylcyclopentyl moiety is introduced. The effect of alkyl chain length and the lateral fluoro substituent on the mesomorphic properties of the obtained LC is discussed. The results show that the nematic temperature range increases with the alkyl chain length increase. The position of the lateral fluoro substituent also plays an important role; LC with the fluoro substitution on the central benzene ring provides the widest nematic temperature range. In conclusion, we have synthesised a new series of LCs with low melting point, wider nematic temperature range and high Delta n value, which is promising in formulating eutectic mixture for display application.Item type:Item, Applications of functional fullerene materials in polymer solar cells(2014-06-01) ;Lai, Yu-Ying ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Hsu, Chain-Shu ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryBulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) on the basis of polymer: fullerene blends have delivered numerous impressive results in the last decade and thus have drawn much attention of the scientific and industrial communities. However, BHJ PSCs often suffer from several intrinsic problems, such as the low open-circuit voltage (V-oc), energetically-unfavorable and chemically-incompatible interfaces, and morphological phase separation of the polymer: fullerene blend driven by thermal treatment, hindering further advancement. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on applications of fullerene-based materials in the BHJ PSCs. Bis-adduct fullerenes possessing high-lying LUMO energy levels can substitute for mono-substituted fullerenes and higher Voc values can thus be achieved. Incorporation of an n-type fullerene interlayer between inorganic and organic active layers in either inverted or conventional PSCs can help in minimization of charge recombination losses at the interface and improvement of charge transfer from the active layer to the inorganic layer, thus resulting in superior PCEs. The optimal active-layer morphology can be maintained through several approaches, such as in situ polymerization of cross-linkable fullerenes, suppression of large-scale PC61BM aggregation by a polyethylene glycol-functionalized fullerene, supramolecular pentafluorophenyl-fullerene stabilization, and light-induced oligomerization of fullerenes. The morphological phase separation of the active-layer materials can thus be minimized. The research of employing fullerene materials will continue playing a critical role in BHJ PSCs. With further investigation and advancement in this field, it is expected that the ultimate goal of commercialization can be realized.Item type:Item, Morphological Stabilization by Supramolecular Perfl uorophenyl-C-60 Interactions Leading to Effi cient and Thermally Stable Organic Photovoltaics(2014-03-01) ;Liao, Ming-Hung ;Tsai, Che-En ;Lai, Yu-Ying ;Cao, Fong-YiWu, Jhong-SianA new PC61BM-based fullerene, [6,6]-phenyl-C-61 butyric acid pentafluorophenyl ester (PC61BPF) is designed and synthesized. This new n-type material can replace PC61BM to form a P3HT:PC61BPF binary blend or serve as an additive to form a P3HT:PC61BM:PC61BPF ternary blend. Supramolecular attraction between the pentafluorophenyl group of PC61BPF and the C-60 cores of PC61BPF/PC61BM can effectively suppress the PC61BPF/PC61BM materials from severe aggregation. By doping only 8.3 wt% PC61BPF, device PC(61)BP(F)651 exhibits a PCE of 3.88% and decreases slightly to 3.68% after heating for 25 h, preserving 95% of its original value. When PC61BP with non-fluorinated phenyl group is used to substitute PC61BPF, the stabilizing ability disappears completely. The efficiencies of PC(61)BP651 and PC(61)BP321 devices significantly decay to 0.44% and 0.11%, respectively, after 25 h isothermal heating. Most significantly, this strategy is demonstrated to be effective for a blend system incorporating a low band-gap polymer. By adding only 10 wt% PC61BPF, the PDTBCDTB:PC71BM-based device exhibits thermally stable morphology and device characteristics. These findings demonstrate that smart utilization of supramolecular interactions is an effective and practical strategy to control morphological evolution.
