Item type:Item, Bispentafluorophenyl-Containing Additive: Enhancing Efficiency and Morphological Stability of Polymer Solar Cells via Hand-Grabbing-Like Supramolecular Pentafluorophenyl-Fullerene Interactions(2017-12-20) ;Hung, Kai-En ;Tsai, Che-En ;Chang, Shao-Ling ;Lai, Yu-YingJeng, U-SerA new class of additive materials bis(pentafluorophenyl) diesters (BFEs) where the two pentafluorophenyl (C6F5) moieties are attached at the both ends of a linear aliphatic chain with tunable tether lengths (BFS, BF7, and BF13) were designed and synthesized. In the presence of BF7 to restrict the migration of fullerehe by hand-grabbing-like supramolecular interactions induced between the C6F5 groups and the surface of fullerene, the P3HT:PC61BM:BF7 device showed stable device characteristiCs after thermal heating at 150 degrees C for 25, 'IL The morphologies Of the active layers were systematically investigated by optical microscopy, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), and atomic force microscopy. The tether length between the two C6F5 groups plays a pivotal role in controlling the intermolecular attractions. BF13 with a long and flexible tether might form a BF13-fullerene sandwich complex that fails to prevent fullerene's movement and aggregation, while BF5 with too short tether length decreases the possibility of interactions between the C6F5 groups and the fullerenes. BF7 with the optimal tether length has the best ability to stabilize the morphology. In sharp contrast, the nonfluorinated BP7 analogue without C6F5-C-60 physical interactions does not have the capability of morphological stabilization, unambiguously revealing the necessity of the C6F5 group. Most importantly, the function of BF7 can be also applied to the high-performance PffBT4BT-20D:PC71BM system, which exhibited an original PCE of 8.80%. After thermal heating at 85 degrees C for 200 h, the efficiency of the Pffi3T4BT-20D:PC71BM:BF7 device only decreased slightly to 7.73%, maintaining 88% of its original efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the thermabdriven morphological evolution of the high-performance PffBT4BT-20D polymer has been investigated, and its morphological stability in the inverted device can be successfully preserved by the incorporation of BF7. This research also demonstrates that BF7 is not only effective with PC61BM but also to PC71BM.Item type:Item, A High-Mobility Low-Bandgap Copolymer for Efficient Solar Cells(2010-12-15) ;Ding, Ping ;Chu, Cheng-Che ;Liu, Bo ;Peng, BoZou, YingpingA new high-mobility low-bandgap polymer, PBDT-DODTBT, based on benzodithiophene and 5,6-bis(octyloxy)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole has been synthesized through a standard Stille coupling reaction. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and chlorobenzene and has excellent film forming properties. Preliminary studies of the copolymer showed the charge mobility as high as 7.15 x 10(-3) cm(2).V(-1). s(-1) from SCLC measurement. Initial photovoltaic cells based on the composite structure of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDT-DODTBT: (alpha)PC(71)BM (1:2)/Ca/Al showed an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V, a power conversion efficiency of 4.02%, and a short-circuit current of 8.96mA.cm(-2).Item type:Item, A Versatile Fluoro-Containing Low-Bandgap Polymer for Efficient Semitransparent and Tandem Polymer Solar Cells(2013-10-01) ;Chang, Chih-Yu ;Zuo, Lijian ;Yip, Hin-Lap ;Li, YongxiLi, Chang-ZhiThe versatility of a fluoro-containing low band-gap polymer, poly[2,6-(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(5-fluoro-2,1,3-benzothia-diazole)] (PCPDTFBT) in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) applications is demonstrated. High boiling point 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB) is used as a solvent to manipulate PCPDTFBT:[6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) active layer morphology to obtain high-performance single-junction devices. It promotes the crystallization of PCPDTFBT polymer, thus improving the charge-transport properties of the active layer. By combining the morphological manipulation with interfacial optimization and device engineering, the single-junction device exhibits both good air stability and high power-conversion efficiency (PCE, of 6.6%). This represents one of the highest PCE valuesfor cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene (CPDT)-based OPVs. This polymer is also utilized for constructing semitransparent solar cells and double-junction tandem solar cells to demonstrate high PCEs of 5.0% and 8.2%, respectively.Item type:Item, Interface Engineering to Enhance the Efficiency of Conventional Polymer Solar Cells by Alcohol-/Water-Soluble C-60 Materials Doped with Alkali Carbonates(2013-06-12) ;Lai, Yu-Ying ;Shih, Ping-I ;Li, Yi-Peng ;Tsai, Che-EnWu, Jhong-SianTwo new C-60-based n-type materials, EGMC-OH and EGMC-COOH, functionalized with hydrophilic triethylene glycol groups (TEGs), have been synthesized and employed in conventional polymer solar cells. With the assistance of the TEG-based surfactant, EGMC-OH and EGMC COOH can be dissolved in highly polar solvents to implement the polar/nonpolar orthogonal solvent strategy, forming an electron modification layer (EML) without eroding the basis of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PC61M/EML/Ca/Al configuration with the insertion of the EGMC OH and EGMC COOH EML between the active layer and the electrode have thus been successfully realized by cost-effective solution processing techniques. Moreover, the electron conductivity of the EML can be improved by incorporating alkali carbonates into the EGMC-COOH EML. Compared to the pristine device with a PCE of 3.61%, the devices modified by the Li2CO3-doped EGMC-COOH EML achieved a highest PCE of 4.29%. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the formation of the EGMC-COOH EML can be utilized as a general approach in the fabrication of highly efficient multilayer conventional devices. With the incorporation of the EGMC-COOH doped with 40 wt % Li2CO3, the PCDCTBT-C8:PC17BM-based device exhibited a superior PCE of 4.51%, which outperformed the corresponding nonmodified device with a PCE of 3.63%.Item type:Item, A New sp2-sp2 Dialkylethylene-Bridged Heptacyclic Ladder-Type Arene for High Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells(2013-04-01) ;Wu, Jhong-Sian ;Lai, Yu-Ying ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Chang, Chih-YuWang, Chien-LungA new dithienobenzo-carbazole (DTBC) heptacyclic arene using sp2-sp2 dialkylethylene moiety as the bridge was successfully synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. This facile benzoannulation planarizes the conjugated framework with the concomitant introduction of four octyl substituents, making the newly designed copolymer PDTBCDTBT exhibit solution processability, superior absorption ability, lower-lying HOMO energy level, and crystalline nature. The solar cell using PDTBCDTBT has produced a high efficiency of 6.2%, which outperforms the corresponding sp3-hybridized C-bridged, Si-bridged and N-bridged analogous polymers.Item type:Item, Dithienocarbazole-Based Ladder-Type Heptacyclic Arenes with Silicon, Carbon, and Nitrogen Bridges: Synthesis, Molecular Properties, Field-Effect Transistors, and Photovoltaic Applications(2012-04-24) ;Wu, Jhong-Sian ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Lin, Tai-Yen ;Chang, Chih-YuShih, Peng-I.A new class of ladder-type dithienosilolo-carbazole (DTSC), dithienopyrrolo-carbazole (DTPC), and dithienocyclopenta-carbazole (DTCC) units is developed in which two outer thiophene subunits are covalently fastened to the central 2,7-carbazole cores by silicon, nitrogen, and carbon bridges, respectively. The heptacyclic multifused monomers are polymerized with the benzothiadiazole (BT) acceptor by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling to afford three alternating donor-acceptor copolymers poly(dithienosilolo-carbazole-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PDTSCBT), poly(dithienocyclopenta-carbazole-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PDTCCBT), and poly(dithienopyrrolo-carbazole-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PDTPCBT). The silole units in DTSC possess electron-accepting ability that lowers the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of PDTSCBT, whereas stronger electron-donating ability of the pyrrole moiety in DTPC increases the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of PDTPCBT. The optical bandgaps (Egopt) deduced from the absorption edges of thin film spectra are in the following order: PDTSCBT (1.83 eV) > PDTCCBT (1.64 eV) > PDTPCBT (1.50 eV). This result indicated that the donor strength of the heptacyclic arenes is in the order: DTPC > DTCC > DTSC. The devices based on PDTSCBT and PDTCCBT exhibited high hole mobilities of 0.073 and 0.110 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively, which are among the highest performance from the OFET devices based on the amorphous donor-acceptor copolymers. The bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device using PDTSCBT as the p-type material delivered a promising efficiency of 5.2% with an enhanced open circuit voltage, Voc, of 0.82 V.Item type:Item, New Low Bandgap Conjugated Polymer Derived from 2, 7-Carbazole and 5, 6-Bis(octyloxy)-4, 7-di(thiophen-2-yl) Benzothiadiazole: Synthesis and Photovoltaic Properties(2012-01-05) ;Ding, Ping ;Chu, Cheng-Che ;Zou, Yingping ;Xiao, DequanPan, ChunyueTo develop conjugated polymers with low bandgap, deep HOMO level, and good solubility, a new conjugated alternating copolymer PC-DODTBT based on N-9'-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole and 5, 6-bis(octyloxy)-4,7di(thiophen-2-yl) benzothiadiazole was synthesized by Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization reaction. The polymer reveals excellent solubility and thermal stability with the decomposition temperature (5% weight loss) of 327 degrees C. The HOMO level of PC-DODTBT is -5.11 eV, indicating that the polymer has relatively deep HOMO level. The hole mobility of PC-DODTBT as deduced from SCLC method was found to be 2.03 x 10(-4) cm(2)/Versus Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the blends of PC-DODTBT and [6,6]-phenyl-C(71)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(71)BM) with a weight ratio of 1:2.5 were fabricated. Under AM 1.5 (AM, air mass), 100 mW/cm(-2) illumination, the devices were found to exhibit an open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) of 0.73 V, short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 5.63 mA/cm(-2), and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.44%. This photovoltaic performance indicates that the copolymer is promising for polymer solar cells applications. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 123: 99-107, 2012Item type:Item, Alternating Copolymers Incorporating Cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b ']dithiophene Unit and Organic Dyes for Photovoltaic Applications(2011-04-15) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Hung, Lung-Chang ;Cao, Fong-Yi ;Kao, Wei-ShunChang, Chih-YuWe have synthesized six p-type copolymers, CPDT-co-TPADCN, CPDT-co-TPADTA, CPDT-co-TPATCN, CPDT-coDFADCN, CPDT-co-DFADTA, and CPDT-co-DFATCN, consisting of a cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene (CPDT) unit and an organic dye in an alternating arrangement. Triphenylamine (TPA) or difluorenylphenyl amine (DFA) units serve as the electron donors, whereas dicyanovinyl (DCN), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid, or tricyanovinyl (TCN) units act as the electron acceptors in the dyes. The target polymers were prepared via Stille coupling, followed by postfunctionalization to introduce the electron acceptors to the side chains. Because of the strongest withdrawing ability of TCN acceptor to induce efficient intramolecular charge transfer, CPDT-co-TPATCN and CPDT-co-DFATCN exhibit the broader absorption spectra covering from 400 to 900 nm and the narrower optical band gaps of 1.34 eV. However, the CPDT-co-TPATCN:PC(71)BM and CPDT-co-DFATCN:PC(71)BM based solar cells showed the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 0.22 and 0.31%, respectively, due to the inefficient exciton dissociation. The DFA-based polymers possess deeper-lying HOMO energy levels than the TPA-based polymer analogues, leading to the higher V(oc) values and better efficiencies. The device based on CPDT-co-DFADTA:PC(71)BM blend achieved the best PCE of 1.38% with a V(oc) of 0.7 V, a J(sc) of 4.57 mA/cm(2), and a fill factor of 0.43. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
