Item type:Item, Thermal and dielectric properties and curing kinetics of nanomaterials formed from poss-epoxy and meta-phenylenediamine(2004-09-16) ;Chen, WY ;Wang, YZ ;Kuo, SW ;Huang, CFTung, PHA nanoporous polyhedral oligomeric silisesquioxane (POSS) containing eight epoxy functional groups [octakis(dimethylsiloxypropylglycidyl ether)silsesquioxane, OG] reacts with meta-phenylenediamine (mPDA) to form epoxy resin network with nanostructures. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the cured OG/mPDA product is significantly higher than that of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) cured with mPDA (DGEBA/mPDA) material due to the presence of the POSS cages that is able to effectively hinder the motion of the network junctions. The cured OG/mPDA product inherently possesses higher thermal stability than the cured DGEBA/mPDA product based on higher maximum decomposition rate temperature, and higher char yield of the former. However, the existence of large fraction of the unreacted amine groups causes lower initial decomposition temperature of the OG/mPDA because it tends to decompose or volatilize on heating at relatively low temperature. The dielectric constant of the OG/mPDA material (2.31) is substantially lower than that of the DGEBA/mPDA (3.51) as a consequence the presence of nanoporous POSS cubes in the epoxy matrix. One-and two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy analyses provided positive evidence for these types of hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, we calculated the interassociation equilibrium constant, based on the Painter-Coleman association model (PCAM), between phenolic resin and POSS indirectly from the fraction of hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups; quantitative analyses indicate that the hydroxyl-siloxane interassociation from the PCAM is entirely consistent with the classical Coggesthall and Saier (C and S) methodology. From a thermal analysis, we observed that the miscibility between phenolic and AS-POSS occurs at a relatively low AS-POSS content, which characterizes this mixture as a polymer nanocomposite system. Our DSC results indicate that the glass transition temperature of these nanocomposites increased initially upon increasing their POSS content, but then decreased at POSS content above 10 wt.-%, presumably because of the formation of relatively low molecular weight species and POSS aggregation as evidenced from MALDI-TOF mass analyses. Our TGA analyses indicated that the 5-wt.-%-mass-loss temperatures (T-d) increased significantly upon increasing the POSS content because the incorporation of the POSS led to the formation of an inorganic protection layer on the nanocomposite's surface. XPS and contact angle data provided positive evidence to back LIP this hypothesis. In addition, contact angle measurements indicated a significant enhancement in surface hydrophobicity after increasing the POSS content.
