The hydrogen-bonding strength of poly(epsilon -caprolactone) (PCL) blends with three different well-known hydrogen-bonding donor polymers [i.e., phenolic, poly(vinyl-phenol) (PVPh), and phenoxy] was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. All blends exhibited a single glass-transition temperature with differential scanning calorimetry, which is characteristic of a miscible system. The strength of interassociation depended on the hydrogen-bonding donor group in the order phenolic/PCL > PVPh/PCL > phenoxy/PCL, which corresponds to the q value of the Kwei equation. Tn addition, the interaction energy density parameter calculated from the melting depression of PCL with the Nishi-Wang equation resulted in a similar trend in terms of the hydrogen-bonding strength. Quantitative analyses on the fraction of hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups in the molten state were made with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for all systems, and good correlations between thermal behaviors and infrared results were observed. The role of hydrogen bonding in promoting intermolecular cohesion and higher glass-transition temperatures of polymer is a subject of longstanding interest. A series of poly(vinylphenol-co-vinylpyrrolidone) copolymers were prepared by the free-radical copolymerization of acetoxystyrene and vinylpyrrolidone; this was followed by the selective removal of the acetyl protective group, with corresponding and significant glass-transition-temperature increases after this procedure. The incorporation of acetoxystyrene into poly(vinylpyrrolidone) resulted in lower glass-transition temperatures because of the reduced dipole interactions in its homopolymers. However, the deacetylation of acetoxystyrene to transform the poly(vinylphenol-co-vinylpyrrolidone) copolymer enhanced the higher glass-transition temperature because of the strong hydrogen bonding in the copolymer chain. The thermal properties and hydrogen bonding of these two copolymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and good correlations between the thermal behaviors and IR results were observed. We have investigated the thermal and spectroscopic properties of blends of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) with zinc perchlorate. Analyses by differential scanning calorimetry indicates that blending with zinc perchlorate increases the values of T-g of PVP. We calculated the interaction strength of the zinc salt/PVP blends based on an extended configuration entropy model. The presence of ion-dipole interactions between PVP and the zinc salt was confirmed based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solid-state NMR spectroscopies, which suggest that the zinc cations coordinate with the carbonyl groups of PVP. The single value of T-1rho(H) measured by solid-state NMR spectroscopy observed for all the zinc salt/PVP blends is smaller than that of pure PVP, which is a finding that indicates that the domain size of this blend system decreases upon increasing the zinc salt content. Based on FTIR and solid-state NMR spectroscopic analyses, we conclude that the ion-dipole interactions in the zinc salt/PVP blend are stronger than the hydrogen bonds in systems such as the poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh)/PVP blend and the PVPh-co-PVP copolymer. We have synthesized a polyhedral oligomeric silisesquioxane (POSS) derivative containing eight acetoxystyryl functional groups [octa(acetoxystyryl)octasilsesquioxane (AS-POSS)] and then blended it with phenolic resin to form nanocomposites stabilized through hydrogen bonding interactions between the phenolic resin's hydroxyl group and the AS-POSS derivative's carbonyl and siloxane groups. One-and two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy analyses provided positive evidence for these types of hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, we calculated the interassociation equilibrium constant, based on the Painter-Coleman association model (PCAM), between phenolic resin and POSS indirectly from the fraction of hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups; quantitative analyses indicate that the hydroxyl-siloxane interassociation from the PCAM is entirely consistent with the classical Coggesthall and Saier (C and S) methodology. From a thermal analysis, we observed that the miscibility between phenolic and AS-POSS occurs at a relatively low AS-POSS content, which characterizes this mixture as a polymer nanocomposite system. We have investigated the enhancement in miscibility, upon addition of bisphenol A (BPA) of immiscible binary biodegradable blends of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). That BPA is miscible with both PCL and PLLA was proven by the single value of T-g observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses over the entire range of compositions. At various compositions and temperatures, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding existed between the hydroxyl group of BPA and the carbonyl groups of PCL and PLLA. The addition of BPA enhances the miscibility of the immiscible PCL/PLLA binary blend and transforms it into a miscible blend at room temperature when a sufficient quantity of the BPA is present. In addition, optical microscopy (OM) measurements of the phase morphologies of ternary BPA/PCL/ PLLA blends at different temperatures indicated an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase diagram, since the Delta K effect became smaller at higher temperature (200 degrees C) than at room temperature. An analysis of infrared spectra recorded at different temperatures correlated well with the OM analyses. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
