Item type:Item, Eyeblink recognition improves fatigue prediction from single-channel forehead EEG in a realistic sustained attention task(2020-06-01) ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Komarov, Oleksii ;Lai, Wei-Kai ;Liang, Wei-GangJung, Tzyy-PingObjective. A passive brain-computer interface recognizes its operator's cognitive state without an explicitly performed control task. This technique is commonly used in conjunction with consumer-grade EEG devices for detecting the conditions of fatigue, attention, emotional arousal, or motion sickness. While it is easy to mount the sensors in the forehead area, which is not covered with hair, the recorded signals become greatly contaminated with eyeblink and movement artifacts, which makes it a challenge to acquire the data of suitable for analysis quality, particularly in few channel systems where a lack of spatial information limits the applicability of sophisticated signal cleaning algorithms. In this article, we demonstrate that by combining the features associated with electrocortical activities and eyeblink recognition analysis, it becomes feasible to design an accurate system for the inattention state prediction using just a single EEG sensor. Approach. Fifteen healthy 22-28 years old participants took part in the experiment that implemented a realistic sustained attention task of nighttime highway driving in a virtual environment. The EEG data were collected using a portable wireless Mindo-4 device, which constitutes an adjustable elastic strip with foam-based sensors, a data-acquisition module, an amplification and digitizing unit, and a Bluetooth (R) module. Main results. The spectral analysis of the EEG samples that immediately preceded the lane departure events revealed alterations in the tonic power spectral density, which accompanied elongations in the drivers' reaction times. The RMSE of the predicted reaction times, which are based on a combination of the brain-related and eyeblink features, is 0.034 +/- 0.019 s, and the r(2) is 0.885 +/- 0.057 according to a within-session leave-one-trial-out cross-validation. Significance. The drowsiness prediction from a frontal single-channel setup can achieve a comparable performance with using an array of occipital EEG sensors. As a direct result of utilizing a dry sensor placed in the non-covered with hair head area, the proposed approach in this study is low-cost and user-friendly.Item type:Item, Global Cortical Network Distinguishes Motor Imagination of the Left and Right Foot(2020-01-01) ;Phang, Chun-Ren ;Ko, Li-Wei ;交大名義發表 ;生物資訊及系統生物研究所National Chiao Tung UniversityConventional passive lower limb rehabilitation is suboptimal since the brain is not actively involved in the training. An autonomous motor imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) could potentially improve rehabilitation outcomes. However, motor cortex regions associated with the individual feet are anatomically close to each other. This presents a difficulty in distinguishing the left and right foot MI during rehabilitation therapy. To overcome this difficulty, we extracted functional connectivity to measure the global cortical network via electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Fourteen spatial connections (P3-Fp1, P3-F3, P3-F7, P3-C3, T5-F7, T5-C3, T5-T3, Fp2-T5, Fp2-P3, T6-Fp2, T6-T4, Cz-Fp1, Cz-F7 and Fp2-F7) found across twelve subjects significantly differed between the left and right foot MI, evidencing nonlocalized brain activity during MI. Foot MI were distinguished using machine learning algorithms in terms of the time- and frequency-domain connectivities extracted from Pearson & x2019;s correlation, multivariate autoregression (MVAR), bandpass correlation, and partial directed coherence (PDC) models. The results showed that connectivity extracted by pairwise Pearson & x2019;s correlation could be distinguished with 86.26 & x00B1; 9.95 & x0025;, while in the frequency-domain, the gamma band presented the best classification accuracy of 73.55 & x00B1; 17.11 & x0025;. We attempted to simulate asynchronous real-time classification paradigms in order to evaluate the classification performance of connectivity features compared to common spatial pattern (CSP) and band power (BP). The results indicate correlation-connectivity has the best outcome, attaining an accuracy of 80.75 & x00B1; 9.51 & x0025; in asynchronous classification.Item type:Item, Wireless and Wearable EEG System for Evaluating Driver Vigilance(2014-04-01) ;Lin, Chin-Teng ;Chuang, Chun-Hsiang ;Huang, Chih-Sheng ;Tsai, Shu-FangLu, Shao-WeiBrain activity associated with attention sustained on the task of safe driving has received considerable attention recently in many neurophysiological studies. Those investigations have also accurately estimated shifts in drivers\' levels of arousal, fatigue, and vigilance, as evidenced by variations in their task performance, by evaluating electroencephalographic (EEG) changes. However, monitoring the neurophysiological activities of automobile drivers poses a major measurement challenge when using a laboratory-oriented biosensor technology. This work presents a novel dry EEG sensor based mobile wireless EEG system (referred to herein as Mindo) to monitor in real time a driver\'s vigilance status in order to link the fluctuation of driving performance with changes in brain activities. The proposed Mindo system incorporates the use of a wireless and wearable EEG device to record EEG signals from hairy regions of the driver conveniently. Additionally, the proposed system can process EEG recordings and translate them into the vigilance level. The study compares the system performance between different regression models. Moreover, the proposed system is implemented using JAVA programming language as a mobile application for online analysis. A case study involving 15 study participants assigned a 90 min sustained-attention driving task in an immersive virtual driving environment demonstrates the reliability of the proposed system. Consistent with previous studies, power spectral analysis results confirm that the EEG activities correlate well with the variations in vigilance. Furthermore, the proposed system demonstrated the feasibility of predicting the driver\'s vigilance in real time.Item type:Item, EEG-Based Motion Sickness Estimation Using Principal Component Regression(2011) ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Wei, Chun-Shu ;Chen, Shi-An ;Lin, Chin-Teng腦科學研究中心Driver's cognitive state monitoring system has been implicated as a causal factor for the safety driving issue, especially when the driver fell asleep or distracted in driving. However, the limitation in developing this system is lack of a major indicator which can be applied to a realistic application. In our past studies, we investigated the physiological changes in the transition of driver's cognitive state by using EEG power spectrum analysis and found that the features in the occipital area were highly correlated with the driver's driving performance. In this study, we construct an EEG-based self-constructed neural fuzzy system to estimate the driver's cognitive state by using the EEG features from the occipital area. Experimental results show that the proposed system had the better performance than other neural networks. Moreover, the proposed system can not only be limited to apply to individual subjects but also sufficiently works in between subjects.Item type:Item, A Vectorcardiogram-based Classification System for the Detection of Myocardial Infarction(2011) ;Huang, Chih-Sheng ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Lu, Shao-Wei ;Chen, Shi-AnLin, Chin-TengMyocardial infarction (MI), generally known as a heart attack, is one of the top leading causes of mortality in the world. In clinical diagnosis, cardiologists generally utilize 12-lead ECG system to classify patients into MI symptoms: 1. ST segment elevation, 2. ST segment depression or T wave inversion. However unstable ischemic syndromes have rapidly changing supply versus demand characteristics that is one of the several limitations of 12-lead ECG system for MI detection. In addition, the ECG sensor placements of 12-lead system is not easily donned and doffed for tele-healthcare monitoring at home. Vectorcardiogram (VCG) system in clinic is another type of diagnosis plot which represents the magnitude and direction of the electrical potential in the form of a vector loop during cardiac electric activity. The VCG system can easily acquire three ECG waves from X, Y, Z directions to composite vector signal in space and the VCG signals can be transferred to 12-lead ECG signal through Dower transformation and vice versa. Hence, this study attempts to develop a VCG-based classification system for the detection of Myocardial infarction. In the experiment results, the proposed system can select the proper ECG features based on cardiologist's knowledge and proposed principal moments of QRS complex. The classification performance of MI detection can be reached to 99.89% of sensitivity, 92.51% of specificity, 95.35% of positive predictive value, and 96.96% overall accuracy with maximum-likelihood classifier (MLC).
