Two new compact planar triple-mode resonators embedded with inductive or capacitive cross coupling are proposed for bandpass filter design. Both resonators consist of a shorted half-wave ring. In the first resonator, two shorted half-wave sections with inductive coupling are connected to the shorted via of the ring. In the second, two quarter-wave sections with capacitive coupling are connected. The inductive coupling is realized by a short grounded high-impedance segment, and the capacitive coupling is implemented by an interdigital capacitor. When both the inductive and capacitive coupling coefficients are properly realized, a transmission zero can be created at designated position in either upper or lower stopband. The shorted ring is accommodated inside the area of the other two resonance sections so that a compact area can be achieved. As compared with a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter, the proposed resonators use only 46.7% and 22.5% in area. Two triple-mode resonator bandpass filters are fabricated and measured to validate the ideas. Measurement results have good agreement with the simulation responses.

Dual-mode ring resonator filters are implemented with asymmetric inductive perturbation for creating transmission zeros on both sides of the passband. In analysis, dependence of the resonance modes and the zeros on positions and sizes of both the inductive and capacitive perturbations is investigated. Under certain conditions, the even- and odd-mode frequencies for a capacitively perturbed ring are the same as the odd and even ones, respectively, for a ring with inductive perturbation. Theoretical background is clearly explained how the two transmission zeros are split up from the center frequency. Two dual-mode ring resonator filters are fabricated and measured for demonstration. To obtain a miniaturized circuit area, the 1-lambda ring trace is folded into a double-ring or spiral configuration. The inductive perturbation is chosen as the crossover and implemented by a short high-impedance coplanar waveguide interconnection in the ground plane of the microstrip. Measurement results show good agreement with the simulation responses.

Periodic stepped-impedance resonators (PSIRs) are proposed to design bandpass filters for multi-spurious suppression. Denoted as PSIRN, a PSIR of lambda/2 long at design frequency f(0) consists of N periods of hi-Z and low-Z sections. A PSIRN coupled section shows transmission zeros at various frequencies. The zeros can be tuned by changing the impedance ratio of the hi-Z and low-Z sections, and can be adopted to suppress the spurious peaks. Responses of the PSIR filters show good rejection in the upper stopband.

Based on microwave C-sections, rat-race coupler is designed to have a dual-band characteristic and a miniaturized area. The C-section together with two transmission line sections attached to both of its ends is synthesized to realize a phase change of 90 degrees at the first frequency, and 270 degrees at the second passband. The equivalence is established by the transmission line theory, and transcendental equations are derived to determine its structure parameters. Two circuits are realized in this presentation; one is designed at 2.45/5.2 GHz and the other at 2.45/5.8 GHz. The latter circuit occupies only 31% of the area of a conventional hybrid ring at the first band. It is believed that this circuit has the best size reduction for microstrip dual-band rat-race couplers in open literature. The measured results show good agreement with simulation responses.

Planar broadband bandpass filters of order up to 9 are synthesized based on the multimode property of stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs). Based on the transmission line theory, the modal frequencies of the SIRs are calculated based on the impedance and length ratios of its hi- and low-Z segments. In the synthesis, the SIR coupling schemes are determined by the split mode graphs. Using one, two, two, three, and three dual- or triple-mode SIRs, quasi-Chebyshev filters with,, six, six, eight, and nine transmission poles, respectively, are four synthesized with a fractional bandwidth (BW) Delta = 50%. Emphasis is placed not only on designing the I/O coupling structures for matching the external Q (Q(ext)) and the circuit BW, but also on matching the resonant peaks of the circuit, with. the nominal Chebyshev poles. Measured results of experimental circuits show good agreement with simulated responses.

A new hybrid ring coupler design is devised for circuit miniaturization based on the periodic stepped-impedance ring resonator structure. The circuit has an area of 21.5 % of a conventional rat race coupler and no passband up to the sixth harmonic of the design frequency. The designs are validated by comparing measured four-port parameters with the simulated results.

Two-stage stepped-impedance resonator (SIR) filters are designed to have a wide upper stopband. Two transmission zeros are also created near the passband to form a quasi-elliptic response. For a 20-dB rejection level, with properly designed SIR geometry and tapped-line structure, the leading three spurious re nances of the SIR are suppressed by transmission zeros and respective unmatched singly loaded Q (Q(si)) values. Measured results illustrate that stopbands up to 8.4 and 5.3 times the design frequency can be achieved for rejection levels of 20 and 30 dB, respectively.

A compact open-loop resonator with multispurious suppression is proposed. When excited symmetrically, the resonator shows two tunable transmission zeros. By adjusting the open-end gap capacitance, one of the zeros is placed near the passband and the other is tuned to collocate with the leading two degenerated higher order resonances, so that the circuit has a sharp transition as well as a wide upper stopband. The experimental circuit shows the first spurious peak occurs at four times the passband frequency (4f(o)), and the measurement shows good agreement with the theoretic prediction.

Compact microstrip bandpass filters of orders N = 4,6, and 8 with quasi-elliptic function responses are synthesized with inline stepped-impedance resonators. The filters have enhanced transition responses since two transmission zeros are generated on both sides of the passband. Existence of these two zeros is investigated by formulating the Y-matrix of the equivalent circuit for the filter and taking adjacent and nonadjacent coupling into account. Some matrix elements Y-j,Y-j+2 representing coupling between two nonadjacent resonators are shown to have the opposite signs in both the lower and upper sides of the center frequency. This property leads to creation of the two transmission zeros on both sides of the passband. It is demonstrated that one more zero can be created in the rejection band by the tapped-line input/output scheme. Experimental circuits on substrates with epsilon(r) = 2.2 and 10.2 are measured to validate the theory and design.
