Item type:Item, Unusual Emission of Polystyrene-Based Alternating Copolymers Incorporating Aminobutyl Maleimide Fluorophore-Containing Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanoparticles(2017-03-01) ;Mohamed, Mohamed Gamal ;Jheng, Yu-Ru ;Yeh, Shu-Ling ;Chen, TaoKuo, Shiao-WeiIn this study, we synthesized an unusual 2-aminobutyl maleimide isobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MIPOSS-NHBu) monomer lacking conventional fluorescent groups. We then prepared poly(styrene-alt-2-aminobutyl maleimide isobutyl POSS) [poly(S-alt-MIPOSS-NHBu)] and poly(4-acetoxystyrene-alt-2-aminobutyl maleimide isobutyl POSS) [poly(AS-alt-MIPOSS-NHBu)] copolymers through facile free radical copolymerizations using azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. A poly(4-hydroxystyrene-alt-2-aminobutyl maleimide isobutyl POSS) [poly(HS-alt-MIPOSS-NHBu)] copolymer was prepared through acetoxyl hydrazinolysis of poly(AS-alt-MIPOSS-NHBu). We employed H-1, C-13, and Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; differential scanning calorimetry; and photoluminescence spectroscopy to investigate the structures and the thermal and optical properties of the monomers and novel POSS-containing alternating copolymers. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino and dihydrofuran-2,5-dione group and clustering of the locked C = O groups from the POSS nanoparticles in the MIPOSS-NHBu units restricted the intramolecular motion of the polymer chain, causing it to exhibit strong light emission. As a result, the MIPOSS-NHBu monomer and the poly(AS-alt-MIPOSS-NHBu) copolymer both have potential applicability in the detection of metal ions with good selectivity.Item type:Item, Strong Hydrogen Bonding with Inorganic Pendant Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanoparticles Provides High Glass Transition Temperature Poly(methyl methacrylate) Copolymers(2018-01-01) ;Yeh, Shu-Ling ;Zhu, Chao-Yuan ;Kuo, Shiao-Wei ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryWe report a series of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) copolymers containing small amounts of methacrylamide (MAAM) and pendant polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) methyl acrylate (MAPOSS) segments. The hydrogen bonding interactions of the MAAM monomer units and the inorganic POSS nanoparticle units improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the PMMA copolymers. For example, PMMA copolymerization with 5 wt% PMAAM and 5 wt% PMAPOSS monomers could enhance the glass transition temperature to 142 degrees C, with higher modulus, higher water contact angle, and reasonably high transparency. Such copolymers have potential to replace PMMA homopolymers in optical applications.Item type:Item, POSS related polymer nanocomposites(2011-12-01) ;Kuo, Shiao-Wei ;Chang, Feng-Chih ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryThis review describes the syntheses of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (T(8)-POSS) compounds, the miscibility of PUSS derivatives and polymers, the preparation of both multifunctional and monofunctional monomers and polymers containing PUSS including styryl-POSS, methacrylate-PUSS, norbornyl-PUSS, vinyl-POSS, epoxy-POSS, phenolic-POSS, benzoxazine-PUSS, amine-PUSS, and hydroxyl-POSS. The thermal, dynamic mechanical, electrical, and surface properties of PUSS-related polymeric nanocomposites prepared from both monofunctional and multifunctional PUSS monomers are discussed. In addition, we describe the applications of several high-performance PUSS nanocomposites in such systems as light emitting diodes, liquid crystals, photo-resist materials, low-dielectric constant materials, self-assembled block copolymers, and nano particles. Octafunctional cubic silsesquioxane (MBZ-POSS) is used as a curing agent, which is synthesized from eight organic benzoxazine tethers through hydrosilylation of vinyl-terminated benzoxazine monomer (VP-a) with octakis(dimethylsiloxy)silsesquioxane (Q(8)M(8)(H)) using a platinum complex catalyst (Pt-dvs). Incorporation of the silsesquioxane core into polybenzoxazine matrix could significantly hinder the mobility of polymer chains and enhance the thermal stability of these hybrid materials. For these nanocomposites, increasing the POSS content in the hybrids is expected to improve its thermal properties with respect to the neat polybenzoxazine. The morphology feature is useful to explain the thermal property changes (T-g and T-d) and AFM images show that the presence of POSS aggregation in larger scales occurs at higher POSS contents. The reason of the heterogeneous phase separation may be from the less compatibility of the inorganic silsesquioxane core with organic benzoxazine species and the homopolymerization of MBZ-POSS. In the course of the formation of the polybenzoxazine/POSS hybrids, POSS particles were separated from the polybenzoxazine rich region, leading to POSS rich domains in the range of 50-1000 nm. Stable and narrow distributed gold nanoparticles modified by 3-mercaptopropylisobutyl POSS to form Au-POSS nanoparticles are prepared by two-phase liquid-liquid method. These Au-POSS nanoparticles form partial particle aggregation by blending with poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) homopolymer because of poor miscibility between Au-POSS and PnBMA polymer matrix. The incorporation the POSS moiety into the PnBMA main chain as a random copolymer matrix displays well-dispersed gold nanoparticles because the POSS-POSS interaction enhances miscibility between gold nanoparticles and the PnBMA-POSS copolymer matrix. This gold-containing nanocomposite exhibits ferromagnetic phenomenon at room temperature. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eight N-alkoxyamine groups were incorporated onto the eight corners of a POSS cube through quantitative hydrosilylation through addition of octakis(dimethylsiloxy)silsesquioxane (O(8)M(8)(H) POSS) with 1-(2-(allyloxy)-1-phenylethoxy)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine (allyl-TEMPO) and Karstedt's agent (a platinum divinylsiloxane complex) was used as a catalyst. Octa-N-alkoxyamines POSS (OT-POSS) were used as platform to synthesize star polystyrene-POSS ((PS)(8)-POSS) homopolymer and diblock copolymers of poly(styrene-block-4-vinyl-pyridine)-POSS ((PS-b-P4VP)(8)-POSS) and poly(styrene-block-acetoxystyrene) ((PS-b-PAS)(8)-POSS) through NMRP. In addition, subsequent selective hydrolysis of the acetyl protective group of (PS-b-PAS)(8)-POSS, the poly(styrene-block-vinyl phenol) ((PS-b-PVPh)(8)-POSS) with strong hydrogen bonding group was obtained. The detailed chemical structure and self-assembled structures of these star block copolymers based on POSS were characterized by (1)H NMR, FTIR, SEC, TEM, and SAXS analyses.
