Item type:Item, Three-Port Optical Phase-Shifters and Modulators With Ultra-High Modulation Efficiency, Positive RF-Linking Gain, and Low Residual Amplitude Modulation(2020-01-01) ;Chao, Rui Lin ;Ahmad, Zohauddin ;Chen, Jyehong ;Lai, YinchiehShi, Jin-WeiA three-port optical phase-shifter and Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) based on PNP-type bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is demonstrated. Significant plasma (injected carrier) induced changes of the refractive index for the optical waveguide become possible with an extremely small driving-voltage and a compact device size during operation of this BJT between the saturation and forward active modes. Devices with a standard MZM structure and a small foot-print (0.5 mm) exhibit a moderate optical insertion loss (2 dB), extremely small (0.18V) and (0.21mW), fast rise/fall time (& x007E; 1ns), and a residue-amplitude-modulation (RAM) as small as 0.18 dB. Furthermore, thanks to the ultra-high modulation efficiency characteristic of our device, a & x002B;4.0 dB net RF-linking gain can be obtained under dynamic operation. Compared to 2-port (base-collector) forward bias operation, under three-port operation, the extra bias current from the base-emitter junction provides a lower (0.18 vs. 0.22 V), a smaller RAM (0.18 vs. 0.6 dB), and a larger RF-linking gain (& x002B;4 vs. & x2212;3.2 dB). The superior performances of the three-port to two-port operations can be attributed to the additional forward bias B-E junction being able to provide more injected carriers to induce stronger plasma effects for optical phase-shifting.Item type:Item, BJT-Type Optical Phase Shifter With Small Power Consumption and Fast Response Time on a Silicon Photonics Foundry Platform(2020-03-01) ;Chao, Rui-Lin ;Ahmad, Zohauddin ;Chen, Jason ;Lai, YinchiehShi, Jin-WeiWe demonstrate a novel optical phase shifter with a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) type of device structure based on the silicon photonics foundry platform. By operating such a device in saturation mode, we obtain measured output I-EC-V-EC characteristics very similar to those of an ideal diode, which has a nearly zero turn-on voltage and an extremely small differential resistance. The huge amount of injected current under a small voltage swing (0.1 V) in the operation window makes it possible to obtain significant plasma induced change of the refractive index in the optical waveguide with an extremely small driving-voltage. The device has a small foot-print (500 mu m in length), but exhibits small static power consumption for the pi phase-shift (P-pi: 4.1 mW), reasonable propagation loss (0.02 dB/mu m), small driving-voltage (V-pi: 0.12 V), fast switching time (rise/fall <1.6/1 ns), a residue amplitude modulation (RAM) as small as 0.18 dB, and a very-low power consumption (0.45 mW) during dynamic operation.Item type:Item, Ultra-short Pulse Compression for Mode-locked Ti:sapphire Laser by using a Tapered Fiber(2009-01-01) ;Hsu, Kuei-Chu ;Lin, Ja-Hon ;Taso, Chih-Chieh ;Chen, Nan-KuangLai, YinchiehUltra-short pulse compression for tunable mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers is demonstrated by utilizing a 1-mu m-diameter tapered fiber with grating pairs. For 100 fs input pulses at the 880-nm center wavelength, the optical bandwidth is broaden from 14 tun to 45 ran after propagating through the 1-cm long tapered fiber. After passing through the grating pairs with 1.6 cm separation, the final pulse width is compressed down to 33 fs. The pulse repetition rates of the two mode-locked lasers can keep locked when multiple-pulse bound states or periodic pulse collisions occur. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a 110 GHz high repetition rate mode-locked fiber laser using a silicon-based micro-ring resonator (SMRR) to act as an intra-cavity optical comb filter, as well as an optical nonlinear element. No electrical bias for the SMRR is required to reduce free carrier absorption. The SMRR has a free spectral range of 0.88 nm, enforcing laser mode-locking at the 110 GHz high rate. The optical nonlinearity of the SMRR also supports the dissipative four-wave mixing effect for generating the mode-locked optical pulse trains. The mode-locked pulse-width, optical 3 dB spectral bandwidth and the time-bandwidth product (TBP) are experimentally measured under different pump currents to the erbium-doped fiber-amplifier module inside the laser cavity. The relative intensity noise and the line-width of the proposed laser are also evaluated. Furthermore, a long-term monitoring is performed. The experimental results show that the optical pulse train generated by the SMRR-based mode-locked fiber laser has a 2.6 ps pulse-width (pump current at 400 mA) at a 110 GHz high repetition rate, narrow line-width (1 kHz), high stability (under observation of an hour), and nearly Gaussian transform-limited (TBP is 0.455).Item type:Item, Laser dynamics and relative timing jitter analysis of passively synchronized Er- and Yb-doped mode-locked fiber lasers(2014-07-01) ;Wu, Shang-Ying ;Hsiang, Wei-Wei ;Lai, Yinchieh ;光電工程學系光電工程研究所Passively synchronized Er-doped and Yb-doped mode-locked fiber lasers with a master-slave configuration are theoretically investigated based on the pulse propagation model for simulating pulse collision in the common fiber section and on the master equation model for simulating laser dynamics. Computational results indicate that the central optical frequency of the slave Er laser will be shifted by the significant cross phase modulation (XPM) effect for the laser to become synchronized with the injected master Yb laser pulse train. Pulse duration change caused by fiber dispersion in the common fiber section will distort the ideal anti-symmetric characteristics of the XPM-induced frequency shift versus the relative timing position of the two color pulses. The relative timing jitter noises of the two synchronized lasers can be minimized by adjusting the relative pulse timing position, and the predicted dependence agrees well with the experimental observation.
