Item type:Item, Chiral liquid crystals as biosensing platforms(2016-01-01) ;Lee, Mon-Juan ;Sung, Yu-Chien ;Hsiao, Yu-Cheng ;Lee, Wei影像與生醫光電研究所The texture observation has long been the core technique in liquid crystal (LC)-based bioassays. Its working principle stems from the dark-to-bright texture change induced by the interruption of the initially homeotropic alignment in nematic bulks or from the radial-to-bipolar configuration transition in LC droplets in the presence of biomolecules. One of the drawbacks of this observational scheme, which requires a polarizing optical microscope, is the difficulty in quantitative analysis. In this invited paper, we report on our recent development of alternative optical biosensing techniques based on cholesteric LCs (CLCs) without the use of a polarizer. The increase in structural order in a vertically anchored CLC cell in the quasi-planar state provides a means to allow detection and quantification of the concentration of biomolecules immobilized on the interface between the mesophase and the surfactant DMOAP for LC vertical alignment.Item type:Item, Liquid-crystal-based biosensing beyond texture observations(2015-01-01) ;Lee, Mon-Juan ;Lin, Chi-Hao ;Lee, Wei ;光電學院College of PhotonicsThe texture observation has long been the core technique in liquid crystal (LC)-based biosensing. One of the drawbacks of this observational means is the difficulty in quantitative analysis. In this invited paper, we report on our recent attempt to improve the LC-based biosensing technique through the analysis of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a protein standard commonly used in the assay of protein concentration. We propose to overcome the technical limitations in the analysis of LC-based biosensors by considering alternative measuring schemes. By means of the induced changes in electro-optical properties of LCs in the presence of different concentrations of BSA, novel quantitative techniques specific for LC-based biosensors are developed.Item type:Item, Dye- and dye-doped liquid crystals in biosensing(2018-01-01) ;Lee, Mon-Juan ;Chiang, Yi-Lun ;Karn, Abhishek ;Wu, Po-ChangLee, WeiLiquid crystals (LCs) have been suggested to have a place in biological sensing for detection and quantitation of biomolecules. Through many years, texture observation has long been the core technique in LC-based bioassays. Its principle stems from the texture change of LCs due to the interruption of the initially homeotropic alignment in nematic bulks or the radial-to-bipolar configuration transition in LC droplets in the presence of biomolecules. Biodetection through optical texture observation is convenient but remains a qualitative method, and alternative approaches of detection and quantitative analysis are necessary for the development of a practical LC-based biosensor. In this study, we explore the potential of two dye-enhanced LCs, a dye LC (DLC) and a dye-doped LC (DDLC), in biosensing and protein quantitation. Depending on the chromophore or dye incorporated in DLC and DDLC, the dichroic features of these LCs enable us to analyze the change in their orientation in the presence of biomolecules by transmission spectrometry, from which spectral parameters are derived to establish novel LC-based protein quantitative methods.Item type:Item, Temperature-dependent electrical and dielectric properties of nematic liquid crystals doped with ferroelectric particles(2016-09-01) ;Hsiao, Yu-Cheng ;Huang, Sheng-Miao ;Yeh, En-Rong ;Lee, Wei影像與生醫光電研究所We report on the temperature dependence of dielectric properties of nematic liquid crystals impregnated with BaTiO3 (BTO) ferroelectric nanoparticles. The behavior of ion transport at low frequencies is discussed by means of dielectric spectroscopy, which allows the ionic concentration and the relaxation time of electrode polarization to be deduced. The experimental results imply that the ferroelectric nanopartides can not only increase the traveling time of ions between two electrodes but also suppress the buildup of the electric double layers. Verified by the voltage holding ratio of cells containing various contents of BTO nanoparticles, it is obvious that doping BTO into liquid crystals is a low-cost and easy way to improve the device performance. By soaking MOFs in the LC, the correlation between the recovery of electrical properties and the water-sorption capacity of MOFs is unambiguously revealed. Experimental evidence from the data of voltage-dependent capacitance, dielectric spectroscopy and voltage holding ratio strongly suggests that the primary contaminant in a LC leftover is moisture. This investigation paves the way for feasible recycling of deteriorated LC materials. The approach reported in this study can be applied to many fluids for purification and regeneration.Item type:Item, Spectral Variations in Selective Reflection in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Containing Opposite-Handed Chiral Dopants(2014-06-13) ;Liu, Yu-Jen ;Wu, Po-Chang ;Lee, Wei ;交大名義發表影像與生醫光電研究所The optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) containing a nematic host dispersed with a binary chiral dopant were investigated. The binary dopant was composed of a right-hand twist (RT) chiral agent and a left-hand twist (LT) chiral agent whose helical twisting power was much smaller than that of the RT one. With a fixed content of the RT additive, we found that the sample redshifts in central wavelength of the selective reflection as the concentration of the LT agent increases, presumably due to the increasing helical pitch caused by the racemic effect. Some other interesting results including the dopant-content and temperature dependence of the optical properties are addressed.
