The oxidation of hot-pressed SiC-particle (SiCp)/zirconia (ZrO2)/mullite composites with various ZrO2 contents, exposed in air isothermally at 1000 degrees and 1200 degrees C for up to 500 h, was investigated; an emphasis was placed on the effects of the ZrO2 content on the oxidation behavior. A clear critical volume fraction of ZrO2 existed for exposures at either 1000 degrees or 1200 degrees C: the oxidation rate increased dramatically at ZrO2 contents of >20 vol%. The sharp transition in the oxidation rate due to the variation of ZrO2 content could be explained by the percolation theory, when applied to the oxygen diffusivity in a randomly distributed two-phase medium. Morphologically, the composites with ZrO2 contents greater than the critical value showed a large oxidation zone, whereas the composites with ZrO2 contents less than the critical value revealed a much-thinner oxidation zone. The results also indicated that the formation of zircon (ZrSiO4) at 1200 degrees C, through the reaction between ZrO2 and the oxide product, could reduce the oxidation rate of the composite.

The synthesis of diacetal trioxa-cage compounds with a new type of skeleton is reported. Ozonolysis of the diols 2a-f, 21, 24, and 33 in CH2Cl2 at -78 degrees C followed by reduction with Me2S gave the diacetal trioxa-cages 3a-f, 22, 25, and 34 in 70-80% yields, respectively. A mechanism via an intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the hydroxy group of the diols to the carbonyl oxide group is proposed for the formation of the diacetal trioxa-cages. The effect of the number of carbon atoms at the bridge of the diols on the formation of the diacetal trioxa-cage skeleton was examined. Ozonolysis of the diols 13 and 15 under the same reaction conditions gave compounds 16 and 18, respectively. No detectable amount of the trioxa-cages 17 and 19 was obtained. For the synthesis of the diacetal trioxa-cages 28a-c and 31, which possess an alkene bond intact, ozonolysis of the diols 27a-c and 30 was performed by controlling the amount of ozone.

A novel approach of incorporating the bound-mode resonance in a uniform micro-CPW (coplanar waveguide) line that shows excellent input matching is presented. The matrix-pencil signal analyses of the CPW-fed micro-CPW guide confirm that two modes, namely, the bound CPW mode and the leaky second higher order microstrip mode, dominate, whereas the microstrip mode contributes too little to be detected. Both theoretical analyses and experimental measurements of the CPW-fed micro-CPW guide show that two well-matched input return losses regions are directly related to the resonances of the CPW mode within the guide.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has become one of major post consumer plastics wastes, in addition to polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The challenge to large-volume plastics companies is to team how to collect, separate, reprocess and market their low-cost products and make a profit, too. The effort of. PET recycling, however, is the most successful story in the plastic recycling technology, including both reclaim and upgrade of PET waste. Beverage bottles made of PET are recycled more than 20 % of the total production. The technology of today can reclaim the postconsumer PET bottles to produce high-quality granulated PET with better than 99 % purity. A practical reclaim process for recycling PET bottles (including bottle, HDPE base cup, aluminum cap, liner, label and adhesive) is available by the Center for Plastics Recycling Research in USA. PET recycling process, like for other plastics, can be divided into three categories: incineration, physical recycling, and chemical recycling. To make the plastic recycling business pay requires more than simple recovery and marketing. Greatest profit potential is in upgraded and value-added reclaim products. Upgrading involves compounding with additives to make material more processable, adding reinforcement, or producing extrusions or finished parts from reclaim resins. For instance, a modified injection-moldable resin made from PET bottle scrap is claimed to provide high impact and processability at less cost than competitive materials. It is foreseen that chemical recycling of waste PET bottle becomes feasible if the price of raw material goes up. Three economical processes are involved in this technology: pyrolysis, hydrocracking, and hydrolysis. The hydrolysis process is presently employed to recover the raw material for unsaturated polyester resin manufacture or polyols for the production of polyurethane resin. It is reported in this presentation that polymer concrete could be a huge potential market for chemical reclaim of PET materials, especially for green or mixed-color PET, which are priced lower than colorless PET reclaim materials.

By closely examining the resonant phenomena of a suspended, flat wire resonator, this paper speculates the existence of the fast-wave mode causing the anomalous resonance that cannot possibly be explained by the well-known bound mode. Followed by proposing a guiding structure model that allows the assessment of the effects of ground plane and sidewalls (external objects) on the guiding properties, the numerical accuracy of the full-wave spectral-domain approach method for the electrically large model is validated by performing the rigorous convergence study. A series of measurements on the resonator are conducted for the same guiding structure of various lengths, confirming that the anomalous resonance is indeed caused by a fast-wave in the form of a space-wave type leaky mode which also exhibits almost identical modal currents to those of the bound mode.

The cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) neural network control scheme is a powerful tool for practical real-time nonlinear control applications. However, despite its initial outstanding performance, the CMAC control system can suddenly diverge after a long period of stable tracking. The authors propose a modification to the CMAC control scheme in order to improve stability while preserving the original good performance.

A new approach is presented to visualize curvilinear volume data produced using the CFD or FEM Methods. Ray, casting methods are effective and renders images with good quality. However, these methods suffer from a tremendous number of computations and can not deal with the curvilinear volume efficiently. The marching cubes method is a popular approach when the ambiguity problem reduces the reliability of the rendered image. We propose a new method to solve these problems. Our method is a cell-by-cell process which constructs sosurfaces using trilinear functions. Several speed up techniques are proposed to reduce the number of computations in our algorithm. In addition to this, error analysis and error minimization are also discussed. Our method is also easy to implement parallelized.

The interfaces between 3-mol%-yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia and commercially pure titanium after reaction at 1750 degrees C were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope and an analytical transmission microscope. Zirconia was reduced to oxygen-deficient zirconia (ZrO2-x) with an O/Zr ratio as low as 1.53, causing the evolution of oxygen. Part of the oxygen could accumulate at grain boundaries, the remainder being dissolved in titanium as alpha-Ti(O). An ordered titanium suboxide (Ti3O) could be formed from a solid solution of alpha-Ti(O) during cooling. A fine crystalline ZrO2-x phase (O/Zr approximate to 2) was also found along with alpha-Zr near the interface on the zirconia side. The alpha-Zr was twinned with one of the twin planes being indexed as {10 (1) over bar 2}. The yttria stabilizer was excluded from zirconia as the reaction was progressing, existing as oxygen-deficient yttria, Extensive dissolution of zirconia in titanium gave rise to the formation of alpha-Ti(Zr,O) solid solution. On cooling, lamellae of Ti2ZrO precipitated from alpha-Ti(Zr,O) with an orientation relationship of {110}(Ti2Zro)//{100}(alpha-Ti) and [111](Ti2ZrO)//[011](alpha-Ti).

The interface of Ti-6Al-4V casting and ZrO2 mold with silica binder was investigated by using electron probe microanalyses (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and analytical transmission electron microscope (TEM). The interfacial reactions were proceeded by the penetration of liquid titanium through open pores near the mold surface. The metal side consisted of an alpha-phase layer on the top of the typical alpha + beta two-phase substrate. In the ceramic side, zirconia was reduced by titanium to form oxygen-deficient zirconia ZrO2-x and evolved a gaseous phase (presumably oxygen). The SiO2 binder, dissolved in the ZrO2 mold, could react with titanium to form Ti5Si3 in the metal side. Meanwhile, titanium could transform to titanium suboxides TiyO (y greater than or equal to 2) and the lower phase boundary of cubic ZrO2-x was shifted to ZrO1.76. Some amount of the stabilizer CaO, dissolved in Ti along with ZrO2, could react with Ti(O) to form Ca3Ti2O7 and CaAl4O7 in the reaction zone. (C) 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
