In terms of their use in displays, quantum dots (QDs) exhibit several advantages, including high illumination efficiency and color rendering, low-cost, and capacity for mass production. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly. Excellent luminescence and charge transport properties of QDs led to their application in QD-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which have attracted considerable attention in display and solid-state lighting applications. In this review, we discuss the applications of QDs which are used on color conversion filter that exhibit high efficiency in white LEDs, full-color micro-LED devices, and liquid-type structure devices, among others. Furthermore, we discuss different QD printing processes and coating methods to achieve the full-color micro-LED. With the rise in popularity of wearable and see-through red, green, and blue (RGB) full-color displays, the flexible substrate is considered as a good potential candidate. The anisotropic conductive film method provides a small controllable linewidth of electrically conductive particles. Finally, we discuss the advanced application for flexible full-color and highly efficient QD micro-LEDs. The general conclusion of this study also involves the demand for a more straightforward QD deposition technique, whose breakthrough is expected.

In this study, CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with various dimensions were used as the color conversion materials. QDs with dimensions of 3 nm and 5 nm were excited by gallium nitride (GaN)-based blue micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) with a size of 30 mu m x 30 mu m to respectively form the green and red lights. The hybrid Bragg reflector (HBR) with high reflectivity at the regions of the blue, green, and red lights was fabricated on the bottom side of the micro-LEDs to reflect the downward light. This could enhance the intensity of the green and red lights for the green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 11% and 10%. The distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was fabricated on the QDs color conversion layers to reflect the non-absorbed blue light that was not absorbed by the QDs, which could increase the probability of the QDs excited by the reflected blue light. The blue light absorption material was deposited on the DBR to absorb the blue light that escaped from the DBR, which could enhance the color purity of the resulting green and red QDs/micro-LEDs to 90.9% and 90.3%, respectively.

The luminescent down-shifting (LDS) effect of a colloidal quantum dot layer on a dual junction solar cell is explored and analyzed. A 5.47% enhancement of power conversion efficiency is recorded when green quantum dots are dispersed on device surface. The surface reflectance spectra before and after the quantum dot dispenses are necessary to decouple the different mechanisms between antireflective and LDS effects. A further deduction of formulation on the dual-junction device with antireflection and LDS effect is presented and as high as 44.6% of short-circuit current increase in the green quantum dot case can be attributed to the LDS effect according to our calculation.

This study developed flexible light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with warm white and neutral white light. A simple ultraviolet flip-chip sticking process was adopted for the pumping source and combined with polymer and quantum dot (QD) films technology to yield white light. The polymer-blended flexible LEDs exhibited higher luminous efficiency than the QD-blended flexible LEDs. Moreover, the polymer-blended LEDs, achieved excellent color-rendering index (CRI) values (Ra = 96 and R9 = 96), with high reliability, demonstrating high suitability for special applications like accent, down, or retrofit lights in the future. In places such as a museum, kitchen, or surgery room, its high R9 and high CRI characteristics can provide high-quality services.

The photoluminescence (PL) with CdTe quantum dots (QDs) -NaCl crystals, mixed with organic film on glass substrate, was measured. This organic film was made by Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Under different overlapping manner, a better PL intensity can be found at multiple layers condition.

In recent year, InGaN-based alloy was also considered for photovoltaic devices owing to the distinctive material properties which are benefit photovoltaic performance. However, the Indium tin oxide (ITO) layer on top, which plays a role of transparent conductive oxide (TCO), can absorb UV photons without generating photocurrent. Also, the thin absorber layer in the device, which is consequent result after compromising with limited crystal quality, has caused insufficient light absorption. In this report, we propose an approach for solving these problems. A hybrid design of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) solar cells combined with colloidal CdS quantum dots (QDs) and back side distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) has been demonstrated. CdS QDs provide down-conversion effect at UV regime to avoid absorption of ITO. Moreover, CdS QDs also exhibit anti-reflective feature. DBRs at the back side have effectively reflected the light back into the absorber layer. CdS QDs enhance the external quantum efficiency (EQE) for light with wavelength shorter than 400 nm, while DBRs provide a broad band enhancement in EQE, especially within the region of 400 nm similar to 430 nm in wavelength. CdS QDs effectively achieved a power conversion efficiency enhancement as high as 7.2% compared to the device without assistance of CdS QDs. With the participation of DBRs, the power conversion efficiency enhancement has been further boosted to 14%. We believe that the hybrid design of InGaN/GaN MQWs solar cells with QDs and DBRs can be a method for high efficiency InGaN/GaN MQWs solar cells.

Colloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QDLEDs) with the HfO2/SiO2-distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) structure are fabricated using a pulsed spray coating method. Pixelated RGB arrays, 2-in. wafer-scale white light emission, and an integrated small footprint white light device are demonstrated. The experimental results show that the intensity of red, green, and blue (RGB) emission exhibited considerable enhancement because of the high reflectivity in the UV region by the DBR structure, which subsequently increases the use in the UV optical pumping of RGB QDs. A pulsed spray coating method is crucial in providing uniform RGB layers, and the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film is used as the interface layer between each RGB color to avoid cross-contamination and self-assembly of QDs. Furthermore, the chromaticity coordinates of QDLEDs with the DBR structure remain constant under various pumping powers in the large area sample, whereas a larger shift toward high color temperatures is observed in the integrated device. The resulting color gamut of the proposed QDLEDs covers an area 1.2 times larger than that of the NTSC standard, which is favorable for the next generation of high-quality display technology.
