Item type:Item, New TDR waveguides and data reduction method for monitoring of stream and drainage stage(2013-11-15) ;Chung, Chih-Chung ;Lin, Chih-Ping ;Wu, I. -Ling ;Chen, Ping-HungTsay, Ting-KueiLess known in the field of hydrological measurements in civil engineering, time domain reflectometry (TDR) has been developed as a new solution to some of the more difficult level measurement problems. This study applied TDR methodology to provide two new designs for a water level sensing waveguide that can be applied in difficult field conditions such as in an underpass, tunnel, culvert, or sewer, etc. Two types of water level sensing waveguides are presented, including a rigid assembled coaxial pipe and a flexible adhered parallel wire. The corresponding data reduction procedure is also proposed to account for uncertainty of travel time analysis and calibrate the velocity of pulse propagation along the waveguides. The satisfactory performance of both the proposed TDR waveguides and data reduction method was experimentally validated. A field case study further demonstrated the feasibility of the TDR technique for water level measurements under typical urban drainage conditions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. A new procedure has been developed to reconstruct the SASW data as MASW-imitating data, taking advantage of the 2D multistation wavefield transformation to better analyze the SASW data. Numerical simulations and a real-world example demonstrate the feasibility of this procedure, but also reveal an unwanted side effect associated with aliasing. A common-receiver survey is proposed for future experiments to eliminate this unwanted side effect and at the same time increase the lateral resolution. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)GT.1943-5606.0000657. A growing trend is towards the application of S-wave testing for spatially 2-D S-wave velocity tomography, ignoring the assumption of horizontally layered medium. A fourth-order velocity-stress finite difference method is used to perform numerical simulations of S-wave testing in earth models with lateral variation. Results show that the lateral heterogeneity induces a non-stationary property in the space domain, resulting in false depth-related dispersion or higher modes if conventional approach based on stationary assumption is used for the dispersion analysis. Artifacts maybe introduced in spatially 2-D S-wave velocity imaging if the effect of lateral heterogeneity is not accounted for. As a potential countermeasure, a high-lateral-resolution S-wave method is proposed to reduce the effect of lateral heterogeneity while maintaining the resolution and depth range of dispersion analysis. It consists of a walk-away survey and a phase-seaming procedure when synthesizing seismograms with different nearest source-to-receiver offset, allowing wide-wavelength dispersion analysis within a small spatial range. The proof of concept is given with several numerical examples. They show that the high-resolution S-wave method can greatly alleviate the effect of lateral heterogeneity and increase spatial resolution. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The paper introduces an innovative SSC monitoring methodology based upon time domain reflectometry (TDR), especially emphasizing on optimum TDR measurement accuracy investigated theoretically and experimentally. Pertinent probe design, probe calibration, as well as data reduction procedures were proposed. Ultimately, the approach can achieve the measurement accuracy to adapt the derived hardware resolution and beyond. In addition, the performance evaluation was carried out considering possible influence factors including water salinity, sediment types and particle sizes, and leading cable lengths. TDR SSC measurements indicate insensitive to sediment particle sizes. After proper calibration, the measurements are also insensitive to water electrical conductivity and not affected by leading cable resistances. There are further advantages of the TDR method including high measurement range from 2 to at least 300 g L(-1), easy calibration, robustness, maintainability, and cost-effective multiplexing. It is based on transmitting an electromagnetic pulse into a coaxial cable grouted in rock or soil mass and watching for reflections of this transmission due to cable deformity induced by the ground deformation. Early detection of localized shear deformation in soft soils and quantifying the shear displacement using TDR remains a challenging work. The TDR response due to localized shear deformation is affected by cable resistance, soil-grout-cable interaction, and shear bandwidth. A comprehensive TDR wave propagation model considering cable resistance is introduced to model TDR response to cable deformity. Effects of the influencing factors on the relationship between the reflection spike and the shear displacement are investigated through laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The implications to enhancing TDR response and quantifying shear displacement are stressed. Practical suggestions are made, including procedure for correcting resistance effect, selection of cable and grout, and how to quantify shear displacement using TDR.
