In this research, we have extended our initial effort in cloud-based IoT/M2M system scalability and developed a more robust solution by considering diverse QoS requirements from various IoT/M2M traffic patterns. Though our initial effort created a highly scalable architecture for IoT/M2M platforms based on OpenStack, it treated all IoT/M2M traffic without any discrepancy in the same underlying network (i.e. in the same network slice). Now, by leveraging software-defined networking in OpenStack and by using our traffic-slice optimal matching algorithm, we can direct different types of IoT traffic to feasible network slices in terms of QoS. Our experiments show that when compared with a system without network slicing, our scalability system performs better in terms of response time, power consumption, and computational cost.

There are many research efforts on situation awareness in smart home with a single user. However, a harder problem is situation awareness when multiple users are present. We investigate the problem of recognizing multiuser activities using wearable devices in a home environment. The objective is to provide situation awareness so that a smart home can respond to the needs of its residents based on their activities. An important part of the research is to detect whether there is any service conflict resulting from the ongoing activities. If so, a conflict resolution algorithm needs to be applied so that an acceptable service by multiple users can be achieved. To verify both the activity detection and the conflict resolution algorithms, two experimental systems are constructed with different architecture alternatives to evaluate the algorithms and decide the most efficient implementation design.

Semantic information has been proven to be necessary in order to increase IoT interoperability by adding meaningful annotations to the data under exchange. The oneM2M as a global standard for IoT middleware has already supported semantic capabilities and allows semantic information to be annotated in its resources. Based on the added semantic information, oneM2M can support more effective resource discovery with semantic discovery. However, the oneM2M approach for semantic discovery is based on indirect query that requires pre-collection of all semantic information distributed in the resource tree while performing the discovery, thus results in very slow response. In this research, we propose a method of direct query to expedite the function of semantic discovery in oneM2M. In our approach, instead of storing the semantic information in the resource tree, we store the semantic information separately and centrally in a permanent RDF store. Our method significantly reduces the response time when performing semantic querying.

The IoT/M2M platforms are emerging to provide a common service layer for various types of new IoT applications. It is foreseen billions of IoT/M2M devices will soon be connected to those IoT/M2M platforms hosted in the cloud. In this research we propose a highly scalable OpenStack-based architecture for IoT/M2M platforms. Our unique contribution consists of leveraging the advanced functionalities of OpenStack to introduce a master node specifically designed for IoT/M2M scalability in the cloud and a load balancing queue node cooperating with the master node for fair distribution of incoming traffic among platform nodes. Using four different types of IoT/M2M applications: smart meter, Bluetooth tags, eHealth, and video, we show that compared to LBAAS and Heat that are OpenStack native load balancing and scalability functions, in most cases our proposed system is capable of achieving the fastest response time and the lowest computational cost with acceptable tradeoff of more energy consumption.

Situation awareness is a must for a smart home to exhibit its smartness. Normally, this is accomplished by accurately detecting the activities of a home user and then responding to the need of the user accordingly. This research utilizes a single wearable device equipped with an accelerometer and a gyroscope to detect eight potential activities in the living room of a smart home environment. First, the models of activities are constructed based on training data generated from the wearable device. Then, when a user performs the activity, the newly generated data would be compared with the established models to identify the type of current activity. Our method of model construction and activity detection is based on Decision Tree and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with the assistance of location data derived from Beacons. The unique advantage of our method lies in its low cost as only one wearable device and a couple of beacons are required for achieving the desired situation awareness.

International standards such as ETSI SmartM2M and oneM2M have defined a client-server model as the common service architecture for IoT/M2M systems. Moreover, the IoT/M2M servers are normally provisioned in a cloud environment. This paper proposes a highly scalable architecture for all such cloud-based IoT/M2M systems. The uniqueness of our architecture is the incorporation of a Master Node in the cloud that is aware of system resources and incoming traffic so that it not only can dynamically decide load balancing policies but also proactively react to scalability needs. When compared with other cloud implementations without such a Master Node, our proposed system achieves faster response time and lower energy consumption.
