Item type:Item, Synthesis and phase transition behaviours of laterally substituted liquid crystals containing methylhydroquinone: emerging of smectic C phase for higher homologues(2017-01-01) ;Seou, Chi-Kien ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Lee, Siew-Ling ;Yeap, Guan-YeowLin, Chien-MinA series of laterally substituted low-molar-mass liquid crystals with molecular geometry were constructed with three phenyl rings bridged through ester central groups as the rigid core and a lateral methyl group as the flexible part of a molecule, with a view to understanding and establishing the effect of molecular structure on liquid crystal behaviour. Low-molar-mass mesogens known as 1,4-bis[(4-n-alkyloxybenzoyl)oxy]toluene with different number of carbon (n) at the alkyl chain have been prepared. Their molecular structures were proposed via physical measurements and spectroscopic techniques. Mesomorphic properties were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The results showed that the melting points as well as the clearing temperatures decreased upon lengthening of the terminal alkyloxy chain lengths. Members with the shorter chain (n = 2-10) exhibited nematic phase. As for higher homologues, members with n = 12, 14, 16 and 18 showed polymorphism, whereby these compounds displayed both smectic and nematic properties.Item type:Item, Alkyl chain self ordering, induction and suppression of mesophase by Cu(II) containing [1,2,3]-triazole-based bidentate salicylaldimine ligands: synthesis, characterisation and X-ray diffraction studies(2014-12-02) ;Heng, Boon-Teck ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Mahmood, Wan Ahmad Kamil ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hong-CheuSome new Cu(II) complexes containing [1,2,3]-triazole-based bidentate salicylaldimine and its analogues with terminal substituent (F, Cl, Br and I) have been synthesieed. All the target complexes and their uncoordinated ligands were elucidated by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible, FT-IR, 1D, 2D H-1 and C-13-NMR). The polarising optical microscope and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have disclosed all complexes and ligands are mesomorphic except the complex without any terminal substituent. The fluoro-substituted complexes with even parity C14H29 and C16H33 exhibit new enantiotropic nematic phase which was absent in their corresponding ligands, whereas the suppression of SmC phase occurred for all complexes with longer C16H33 and C18H37. X-ray diffraction confirmed the existence of SmA, SmC and N phases for complexes and ligands. The other notable feature is that the self-ordering of terminal alkyl chain occurred in SmA and SmC phases of complexes with even terminal alkyl chain ranging from C14H29 to C18H33. Their corresponding ligands exhibit intercalated structure of SmA and SmC phases. The thermal behaviour studies show that the fluoro-substituted triazole-based complexes possess lowest phase transition temperature and more stable as compared to other substituent which decomposed during the isotropisation.Item type:Item, Synthesis and smectogenic properties of novel phloroglucinol-based star-shaped liquid crystals containing three peripheral alkyloxylated Schiff base arms(2013-04-01) ;Ooi, Yew-Hong ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Han, Chun-Chieh ;Lin, Hong-CheuKubo, KenjiA series of symmetrical trimeric liquid crystalline compounds of which the molecular structure with a central core of 1,3,5-benzene attached by three rod-like mesogenic Schiff base moieties via the propylene spacers and ether linkages has successfully been synthesised and characterised by infra red and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. All the star-shaped compounds in this series exhibit predominantly SmC phase except the analogue possessing terminal C8H17 group. It is apparent that the members with even parity from C10H21 to C16H33 show enantiotropic SmC phase while the member with longest terminal chain of C18H37 is inclined to monotropic smectogen. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the tilted smectic layer structures of the SmC phase are confirmed to have an obvious sharp peak at small angles of 2 approximate to 1.03 degrees 1.48 degrees with d-spacing values of 4.014.58 nm, which are corresponding to tilt angles of approximate to 48 degrees in the SmC phase.Item type:Item, Mesogenic Schiff base esters with benzothiazole core: synthesis and phase transition studies(2010) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Koh, Teck-Ming ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Lin, Hong-CheuLee, Siew-LingA series of new rod-shaped mesomorphic compounds, 6-ethoxy-2(4-alkanoyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles, consisting of a 2,6-disubstituted benzothiazole core and a Schiff base central linkage, were synthesized and their structures were ascertained via elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques. Their mesomorphic properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. All compounds showed enantiotropic mesomorphism. Whilst the lower members of the series, hexanoyloxy and octanoyloxy derivatives exhibited nematic phase, the higher members (decanoyloxy, dodecanoyloxy, tetradecanoyloxy, hexadecanoyloxy and octadecanoyloxy derivatives) exhibited nematic and smectic C phases.Item type:Item, Synthesis of new schiff base ester liquid crystals with a benzothiazole core(2010) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Koh, Teck-Ming ;Lee, Siew-Ling ;Yeap, Guan-YeowLin, Hong-CheuA series of new calamitic liquid crystals, 6-methoxy-2-(4-alkanoyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles, comprising a benzothiazole core, terminal methoxy group and a Schiff base linkage were synthesised and characterised. This series comprises 12 members wherein members differ by the length of the alkanoyloxy chain (Cn-1H2n-1COO-, where n = 2-8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18). Their mesomorphic properties were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The short chain derivatives (n = 2 and 3) were non-mesogenic compounds, while an enantiotropic nematic phase was present throughout the remaining members of the series. The smectic C phase emerged from the decanoyloxy derivative onwards.
