To explore the insights of recent experiments on the excitation of the NO molecule by chirped subpicosecond IR pulses, a corresponding theoretical study is presented. The agreements between experimental and theoretical results show the importance of the full-dimensional quantum-mechanical calculation. [S1050-2947(99)04711-3].

A new recording method using a liquid crystal display (LCD) as an input device to synthesize a composite filter is presented. The filter in the optical correlator makes use of the multiple diffraction orders from the pixelated structure of the LCD panel. During the recording stage, each training pattern is sequentially recorded as a sub-filter at different diffracted order by holographic technology. After that, an input pattern could be simultaneously processed with all sub-filters in parallel such that the composite filter can be achieved. This recording method with spatial distribution could avoid the low efficiency of the conventional multi-exposure. The simulations and experimental results show that this system can perform invariant correlation as a composite filter. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of the donor acceptor concentration ratio in iron-doped Lithium niobate (Fe:LiNbO3) crystal plates on photorefractive response time and on grating diffraction efficiency are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The results provide a useful guide for designing photorefractive plates far optical information-processing applications. Two devices for real-time image recognition have been demonstrated: a photorefractive joint-transform correlator and a VanderLugt correlator. The former emphasizes fast response time, and the latter emphasizes high diffraction efficiency. By appropriate adjustment of the dopant concentration and the ratio of the donor acceptor levels, photorefractive Fe:LiNbO3 crystals that facilitate specific applications have been designed and fabricated. Shift-invariant image correlations have been achieved. (C) 1999 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(99)01307-7].

Two kinds of dual functional carbazole-based chromophores are synthesized to enhance the photorefractive (PR) performance of the polymers by attaching the electron-donating and electron-accepting groups with a diazo bridge on the 3- and 6-positions of the N-ethylcarbazole. The electron-donating group is N,N-diethanol aminophenyl. The electron-accepting group is either p-nitrophenyl or 5-nitrothiazole. The peak maximum of the UV/vis absorption spectra of the 5-nitrothiazole-containing chromophore PANTAC at 535 nm is longer than that of the p-nitrophenyl-containing PANPAC at 477 nm. Both chromophores exhibit a large first hyperpolarizability in the hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiment due to the extended chain length. The first hyperpolarizability of PANTAC is 1100 x 10(-30) esu, almost the double of that of PANPAC (590 x 10(-30) esu). The diffraction efficiencies of both polymers are the function of the film thickness and the laser beam wavelength with a maximum eta(max) at a thickness d(max) between 15 and 23 mu m Surprisingly, the PANPAC-based PR polymer reveals a higher maximum diffraction efficiency (eta(max)) and better fringe of the stored holograms than the PANTAC-based PR polymer does. Both the PR polymers written/read by the green/red laser have greater eta(max) values than those written/read by the green/green laser. These phenomena are related to the balance between absorption and transmission of the laser beam through the PR polymer.

We analyze and compare two typical recording and thermal fixing procedures of a volume hologram in a Fe:LiNbO3 crystal (low-high-low procedure and high-low procedure). We consider the kinetics of the recording, compensating, and developing processes by taking into account the ratio of the conductivities between the protons and the electrons as a function of temperature. From the analysis the optimal environmental conditions tin terms of the fixing temperature and the compensation time) for each fixing procedure can be deduced for a crystal with given material parameters. This work explores the dissociation dynamics and angular distribution of the HF molecule interacting with intense half-cycle and few-cycle pulses, including the rotational degree of freedom. The dependences of the dissociation probability on both the pulse type and the pulse duration are discussed. Our results indicate that the angular distribution of the dissociation probability is highly asymmetric to the perpendicular direction of field polarization, and becomes more symmetric with an increase in the number of field cycles. The spatial distribution of the wave function demonstrates the feasibility of constructing a molecular wave packer by interacting with the half-cycle pulse.

We present a hetero-associative memory for multiple-associative pairs by using the phase-multiplexing technique. Two methods for reducing the cross-talk between different association pairs are proposed. An optical experiment for the edge-enhancement associative memory is also demonstrated. We present the design and fabrication of a phenanthrenequinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) photopolymer material. Large blocks of samples were made, and the material showed negligible shrinkage after optical exposures. We recorded and reconstructed 250 holograms at a single spot, using a 1-cm(3) block. We investigate the group velocity of light in a one-dimensional volume-index grating inside a photorefractive LiNbO3 crystal. The slowdown of the group electromagnetic propagation is observed experimentally by tuning of the wave number of the optical beam close to the outside edge of the forbidden bandgap. We obtain a large group index of up to 7.5 in a 3.5-cm crystal sample. The group index is compared with the result of a theoretical derivation. The results are presented and discussed. A direct fine-patterning process using photosensitive gel film derived from PZT precursor solution has been used to fabricate the piezoelectric cantilever from lead acetate trihydrate, zirconium n-propoxide and titanium isopropoxide modified with onitrobenzyl alcohol (NBA). Two main heating schedules were used to investigate the effect of various NBA amounts on microstructure, surface morphologies, and electrical properties of PZT films. As NBA was added above 1 wt%, it shows detrimental effect on crystal phase, microstructure evolution and electrical properties of PZT films. With increasing NBA content, both pyrochlore phase and pore formation was promoted. However, prior to next coating, a pre-pyrolysis is required to reduce the pore formation and obtain good piezoelectric characteristics. The mechanical coupling k(31) measured for PZT micro-cantilever is about 0.26 which is comparable to those reported for bulk ceramics.
