A compact quadruple-mode ring resonator is proposed for synthesis of a quasi-elliptic bandpass filter. The resonator is composed of four half-wavelength rings connected to a single grounded via. For miniaturization, the ring areas are overlapped and the crossovers are implemented by short CPW sections in the ground plane. As a result, the resonator uses about 50% area of a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter. Among the four rings, all coupling coefficients are of inductive type realized by shorted high-impedance and coupled-line sections. Two zeros are created by capacitive source-load coupling, and the response is synthesized by the coupling matrix method. Agreement between simulation and measurement results of a realized circuit validates the approach.

A new compact filtering rat-race coupler is implemented by a 2x2 cross coupled configuration based on compact miniaturized hairpin resonators. Passband responses with transmission zeros are synthesized by an (n+4)x(n+4) coupling matrix. The zeros are created in the output ports by adding source-load coupling and their analytical expressions are derived. An experimental circuit is fabricated and measured. The circuit area is only 23.2% of that of a conventional rat-race coupler. Measured magnitude and phase responses of the four-port S-parameters show good agreement with simulation data.

Source-load coupling is inserted to a compact filtering branch-line coupler for generating transmission zeros. Quarter-wavelength stepped-impedance resonators are employed as the resonating elements for circuit miniaturization. All inter-resonator couplings are of inductive type, and the source-load coupling between adjacent feeds is of capacitive type. Proper source-load coupling is extracted for control of attenuation level in stopband. The realized circuit area is only 31.4% of that of a conventional branch-line coupler. Measurement results have good agreement with the simulation data.

New dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters with quasi-elliptic function responses are devised based on a single stepped-impedance resonator. The center of the resonator is grounded through a short high-impedance section which is equivalent to an inductor for providing coupling between the resonant modes. In addition, in order to increase the degree of freedom for the dual-band design, an interdigital capacitor is introduced so that both center frequencies and bandwidths of the two passbands can be controlled. Moreover, with the aid of source-load coupling, two extra transmission zeros can be created close to the passband edges and hence greatly improve the filter selectivity between the two passbands. Two filters are fabricated and measured to validate the proposed idea. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.
