Dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters are developed based on a single ring resonator. The ring is composed of two half-wave stepped-impedance resonators with short-circuited ends, which are connected to ground vias by short high-impedance sections, providing inductive coupling between the resonating modes and hence bandwidth control. Experimental filters are fabricated and measured for validation. Skew-symmetric feed structure is employed in the first circuit for enhancing the frequency selectivity around the second band. Source-load coupling is incorporated with the second design to create transmission zeros on both sides of the two passbands, greatly improving the performance in transition bands. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

We have synthesized and characterized a series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-oligothiophene copolymers, of which the number of regioregular oligothiophene ring (2T, 3T and 4T) and the arrangement of the alkyl side-chain on regioirregular quarterthiophene (4T0, 4T1 and 4T2) are variable. The side chains with regioregular lead to more planar copolymer backbones and higher short circuit current (J(sc)), but backbone torsion (due to regioirregular side chains) generates greater open-circuit voltages (V-OC) for DPP-oligothiophene copolymers. The increasing thiophene ring progressively raises HOMO energy level of copolymers but marginally affects their band gaps. Additionally, the HOMO energy level was found declined significantly with side-chain regioirregularity, because of reducing length of pi-conjugation. The HDDPP4T0 exhibits the strongest absorption, extensive network structure, and high hole mobility (mu(h )= 6.04 x 10(-4)cm(2)V(-1) s(-1)). These characteristics contribute to the exceptional high J(SC) of 18.96 mA/cm(2) for OPV with PCE = 6.12%. However, the HDDPP4T1 having an optimal combination of pi-conjugation and energy level affords the second highest V-OC (0.73 V) and the third highest J(SC) (16.89 mA/cm(2)), resulting the best PCE of 7.51% among all. X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and space-charge-limited-current (SCLC) measurements reveal that the solvent additive of diphenylether (DPE) enables PC71BM-blended copolymers thin film in crystallinic fibril with enhanced hole mobility.

An ultra-compact second-order bandpass filter with stopband extension is implemented with shorted ring resonators. In the design, the two resonances of the structure are separately controlled by electric and magnetic coupling between the rings. Two transmission zeros on both sides of the passband are created through the multipath effect between the 1/0 ports. Circuit miniaturization is accomplished by attaching an open low-impedance stub to each shorted ring. The upper stopband with a rejection better than 30 dB is extended to 4.32 times the passband frequency. The circuit area is only 8.8% of that of a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

A new configuration for ring resonator is proposed for bandpass filter design with size reduction and stopband extension. The planar self-coupled ring is twisted at its middle and a short CPW section is implemented in the ground plane for the three-dimensional interconnection. The resonator has two resonance modes and the filter possesses one transmission zero on the high side of the passband. With a pair of open low-impedance stubs attached to the ring, the circuit has an area of only 9.65% of that of the conventional ring resonator filter, and the upper stopband is extended up to higher than five times the center frequency. Measured results of a fabricated prototype circuit show good agreement with the simulation.

A compact quadruple-mode ring resonator is proposed for synthesis of a quasi-elliptic bandpass filter. The resonator is composed of four half-wavelength rings connected to a single grounded via. For miniaturization, the ring areas are overlapped and the crossovers are implemented by short CPW sections in the ground plane. As a result, the resonator uses about 50% area of a conventional dual-mode ring resonator filter. Among the four rings, all coupling coefficients are of inductive type realized by shorted high-impedance and coupled-line sections. Two zeros are created by capacitive source-load coupling, and the response is synthesized by the coupling matrix method. Agreement between simulation and measurement results of a realized circuit validates the approach.

A new compact filtering rat-race coupler is implemented by a 2x2 cross coupled configuration based on compact miniaturized hairpin resonators. Passband responses with transmission zeros are synthesized by an (n+4)x(n+4) coupling matrix. The zeros are created in the output ports by adding source-load coupling and their analytical expressions are derived. An experimental circuit is fabricated and measured. The circuit area is only 23.2% of that of a conventional rat-race coupler. Measured magnitude and phase responses of the four-port S-parameters show good agreement with simulation data.

Source-load coupling is inserted to a compact filtering branch-line coupler for generating transmission zeros. Quarter-wavelength stepped-impedance resonators are employed as the resonating elements for circuit miniaturization. All inter-resonator couplings are of inductive type, and the source-load coupling between adjacent feeds is of capacitive type. Proper source-load coupling is extracted for control of attenuation level in stopband. The realized circuit area is only 31.4% of that of a conventional branch-line coupler. Measurement results have good agreement with the simulation data.

Dual-mode ring resonator filter is designed to have a relatively wide passband with a miniaturized circuit area. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the ring trace to a spiral configuration. The two degenerate modes are split up by an asymmetric inductive perturbation. As a result, the circuit area is only 29% of that of a conventional ring. The strong I/O coupling required by the wide passband property is implemented by adding an impedance transformer for matching the external quality factor (Q(ext)) with the circuit bandwidth. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

New dual-mode dual-band bandpass filters with quasi-elliptic function responses are devised based on a single stepped-impedance resonator. The center of the resonator is grounded through a short high-impedance section which is equivalent to an inductor for providing coupling between the resonant modes. In addition, in order to increase the degree of freedom for the dual-band design, an interdigital capacitor is introduced so that both center frequencies and bandwidths of the two passbands can be controlled. Moreover, with the aid of source-load coupling, two extra transmission zeros can be created close to the passband edges and hence greatly improve the filter selectivity between the two passbands. Two filters are fabricated and measured to validate the proposed idea. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.

A dual-mode ring resonator filter is devised to have a miniaturized size and its performance investigated. By placing an inductive perturbation at an asymmetric position, with respect to the input and output ports, two transmission zeros are created on the both sides of the passband. The miniaturization is achieved by folding the microstrip ring trace into a spiral configuration, incorporating with metallic via-holes and coplanar waveguide sections as the interconnection. The circuit size is only 20.5% of that of a conventional ring resonator. Measured results show good agreement with the simulation.
