The concept of frame plays a significant role in art design. However, traditional picture frames do not offer human interaction. To create a new dimension of graphic artwork demonstration, we utilize the Internet of Things (IoT) technology to develop human and digital frame interaction. Specifically, this paper uses IoTtalk, an application-layer IoT device management platform, to quickly establish connections and meaningful interactions between IoT devices. The interaction between human and frame is accomplished by implementing an output device of IoTtalk called FrameTalk, which allows the input devices to control the dynamic graphics on a digital frame. The FrameTalk device can be exhibited in specific frame hardware or the screen of any computing device. We illustrate the functional block diagram of the FrameTalk device and its default applications. Then we demonstrate two FrameTalk application examples. The first example is CalligraphyTalk, where an audience can interact with the frame to write Chinese poems. The second example is PortraitGuess that allows an audience to play the historical figures portrait painting guess game by the frame. We measure the delays between the smartphone and the FrameTalk device, and develop both analytic and simulation models to investigate the user experience of the FrameTalk applications. Our study indicates that good user experience can be achieved in FrameTalk.

IoTtalk is a platform for IoT device interaction, which has been used to develop many IoT applications such as home automation. This paper uses Flower Sermon artwork as an example to show how interactive visual design can be conveniently implemented in IoTtalk. The Flower Sermon artwork conducts cyber physical interaction, which animates a dandelion in a mirror when a person smiles at that mirror. The dandelion grows larger as the person smiles bigger. The flower also vibrates following the heartbeat rate of the person. In our approach, the camera detecting the face expression and the heartbeat rate is considered as an input IoT device, and the mirror display for dandelion animation is considered as an output IoT device. In IoTtalk, the features of the dandelion animation are considered as the actuators that can be independently controlled. IoTtalk nicely connects these IoT devices, where various features can be created for interactive visual design with little or without any programming effort. We also measure the time complexity for data delivery among the input and the output IoT devices. Our study indicates that the time delays are less than 0.07s on the average even if the IoTtalk server is located in a cloud.

Due to the flourishing development of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, many smart home applications have become commercially available. One of the most popular applications is remotely controlled smart sockets. Most commercial smart socket products allow the user to control single-sockets. This paper proposes a smart socket system called MorSocket ("more sockets") that allows the user to control multiple separated sockets within a control webpage. These sockets share the same wireless communication module and therefore the hardware cost of MorSocket is lower than the single-socket solutions. Furthermore, by integrating MorSensor with an IoT management platform called IoTtalk, MorSocket can be automatically controlled by arbitrary sensors for temperature, humidity, UV, CO2, and so on. Such configuration is easily and flexibly set up through the IoTtalk GUI without extra programming efforts. We also develop the MorSensor system that provides multiple configurable sensors tailored to control MorSocket through simple plug-and-play. Then we investigate the user tolerance delay between when the user presses the on/off button and when he/she presses the next time if MorSocket does not respond. The user experience is poor if the MorSocket access delay is longer than the tolerance delay, and the user may keep pressing the button. We conduct measurements, analytic modeling, and simulation experiments to study the impact of the user tolerance delay. Our study observes the quick response of MorSocket, which results in excellent user experience.

Several tools provide popular solutions for creating innovative Internet of Things (IoT) applications on single Arduino board. However, interactions among multiple Arduino boards need significant effort to be established. This paper proposes ArduinoIo-Ttalk (ArduTalk), a graphical user interface (GUI)-based platform aims to develop IoT network applications for interaction among multiple Arduino boards. ArduTalk utilizes IoTtalk, an IoT device management platform for quickly establishing connections and meaningful interactions between IoT devices without concerning the lower layer communication protocols. In this paper, the IoTtalk GUI has been significantly enhanced for ArduTalk. By integrating Arduino with the enhanced IoTtalk, ArduTalk allows a user to arbitrarily link and relink sensors to actuators without or with little programming effort, and quickly generate Arduino applications for different purposes. We conduct measurements to investigate the time complexity for data delivery among multiple Arduino boards, and propose a damping mechanism to address the fairness issue caused by the discrepancies between local and remote delays among the Arduino boards.

The National Chiao Tung University is deploying several location-based IoT applications on campus based on an IoT device management platform called IoTtalk. The applications include dog tracking, emergency buttons, and indoor/outdoor environment conditions monitoring (PM2.5, temperature, CO2, and so on). Some of the IoT devices for these applications have simple hardware structures to save energy, and therefore are not equipped with the positioning sensors (e.g., GPS or iBeacon). To support mobility management for these simple IoT devices, we develop a location finding mechanism in IoTtalk. By introducing the locator device in IoTtalk, we can effectively support mobility management for simple IoT devices that does not have location positioning capability. We describe how to develop the device applications to accommodate the location update feature, and show how to configure the location finding mechanism through the IoTtalk GUI. Then we conduct analytic analysis and simulation to investigate the accuracy of location tracking and power consumption for the dog tracking application. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Almost half of all Americans either own smart home technology or plan to invest in it. Therefore, many commercial smart IoT solutions aim for home automation, and try to live up with high expectation for smart home. A major problem of these smart home solutions is that they cannot flexibly accommodate the existing remotely controlled aftermarket appliances. This paper proposes IoTtalk remote control (IoTtalk-RC), a mechanism that utilizes sensors as universal software-defined remote control for aftermarket home appliances. Our solution replaces the infrared remote controller of cheap aftermarket home appliances and provides extra intelligence of sensors that can be manipulated by the homeowners. We conduct measurements, analytic analysis and simulation experiments to investigate the time complexity of IoTtalk-RC. This paper indicates that the extra transmission delays of remote control incurred by IoTtalk-RC are small even if the IoTtalk server is remotely located at a virtual machine of a cloud. In other words, IoTtalk-RC is feasible and can be effectively operated with the IoT technology.
