Item type:Item, An electrically tunable optical zoom system with separated focusing and zooming functions(2013-01-01) ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Chen, Po-Ju ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsIn this paper, we demonstrated an electrically tunable optical zoom system with separated focusing and zooming functions. The optical mechanism is discussed. The focusing distance and magnification of the image can be controlled separately by focusing lenses and zooming lenses. As a result, the zoom ratio is independent of objective distance and only depends on the tunable range of the lens power of the active-optical elements. This study helps designing many applications with an optical zoom function, such as cell phones, holographic projectors, pico projectors and endoscopes.Item type:Item, An optical system adopting liquid crystals with electrical tunability of wavelength and energy density for low level light therapy(2015-01-01) ;Chang, Chia-Ming ;Wang, Yu-Jen ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Lin, Yi-HsinSrivastava, Abhishek KumarWe have developed a bistable negative lens by integrating a polarization switch of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) with a passively anisotropic focusing element. The proposed lens not only exhibits electrically tunable bistability but also fast response time of sub-milliseconds, which leads to good candidate of optical component in optical system for medical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical system consisting of two FLC phase retarders and one LC lenses that exhibits both of electrically tunable wavelength and size of exposure area. The operating principles and the experimental results are discussed. The tunable spectrum, exposure area size and tunable irradiance are illustrated. Compared to conventional lenses with mechanical movements in the medical light therapy system, our electrically switchable optical system is more practical in the portable applications of light therapy (LLLT).Item type:Item, Liquid crystal lenses with tunable focal length(2017-01-01) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Wang, Yu-Jen ;Reshetnyak, Victor ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsLenses with tunable focal length play important roles in nature by helping species avoid predators and capture prey. Many practical devices mimic lens concept for imaging, sensing, and detection. This review covers fundamental optics of lenses and its extension to lenses made of liquid crystals (LCs). Three main types of LC lenses are described, namely, lenses with curved surfaces, flat gradient-index lenses and composite lenses. The review discusses advantages of LC lenses over their isotropic counterparts, challenges in their fabrication and control, as well as a variety of potential applications. We also discuss the current challenges associated with nematic LC lenses and their solutions. LC lenses are already having significant impacts on optics and optometry, and these impacts will grow with discovering new LC materials and new lens designs.Item type:Item, A Polarizer-Free Liquid Crystal Lens Exploiting an Embedded-Multilayered Structure(2015-04-15) ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Wang, Yu-Jen ;Chang, Chia-Ming ;Lin, Yi-Hsin光電工程學系Development of liquid crystal (LC) lenses is limited by the power law. The aperture size of LC lenses is traded for the lens power. In this letter, we prove theoretically and experimentally that the aperture size is not limited by the power law based on a polarizer-free LC lens exploiting an embedded-multilayered structure. By adding numbers of LC layers, the aperture size of the LC lens can be enlarged without lowering the tunable lens power. The optical theory of the polarization independence of the LC lens is derived. The wavefronts are measured after light propagates through the LC lens to discuss the polarization independence and image adjustment. The impact of this study is to show the possibility of LC lenses with large aperture size for wearable devices and ophthalmic applications.
