The unpredictability of seizures is often considered by patients to be the most problematic aspect of epilepsy, so this work aims to develop an accurate epilepsy seizure predictor, making it possible to enable devices to warn patients of impeding seizures. To develop a model for seizure prediction, most studies relied on Electroencephalograms (EEGs) to capture physiological measurements of epilepsy. This work uses the two domains of EEGs, including frequency domain and time domain, to provide two different views for the same data source. Subsequently, this work proposes a multi-view convolutional neural network framework to predict the occurrence of epilepsy seizures with the goal of acquiring a shared representation of time-domain and frequency-domain features. By conducting experiments on Kaggle data set, we demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms all methods listed in the Kaggle leader board. Additionally, our proposed model achieves average area under the curve (AUCs) of 0.82 and 0.89 on two subjects of CHB-MIT scalp EEG data set. This work serves as an effective paradigm for applying deep learning approaches to the crucial topic of risk prediction in health domains.

Liver transplantation is one of the most effective treatments for end-stage liver disease, but the demand for livers is much higher than the available donor livers. Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a commonly used approach to prioritize patients, but previous studies have indicated that MELD score may fail to predict well for the postoperative patients. This work proposes to use data-driven approach to devise a predictive model to predict postoperative survival within 30 days based on patient's preoperative physiological measurement values. We use random forest (RF) to select important features, including clinically used features and new features discovered from physiological measurement values. Moreover, we propose a new imputation method to deal with the problem of missing values and the results show that it outperforms the other alternatives. In the predictive model, we use patients' blood test data within 1-9 days before surgery to construct the model to predict postoperative patients' survival. The experimental results on a real data set indicate that RF outperforms the other alternatives. The experimental results on the temporal validation set show that our proposed model achieves area under the curve (AUC) of 0.771 and specificity of 0.815, showing superior discrimination power in predicting postoperative survival.

Imbalanced data is characterized by the severe difference in observation frequency between classes and has received a lot of attention in data mining research. The prediction performances usually deteriorate as classifiers learn from imbalanced data, as most classifiers assume the class distribution is balanced or the costs for different types of classification errors are equal. Although several methods have been devised to deal with imbalance problems, it is still difficult to generalize those methods to achieve stable improvement in most cases. In this study, we propose a novel framework called model-based synthetic sampling (MBS) to cope with imbalance problems, in which we integrate modeling and sampling techniques to generate synthetic data. The key idea behind the proposed method is to use regression models to capture the relationship between features and to consider data diversity in the process of data generation. We conduct experiments on 13 datasets and compare the proposed method with 10 methods. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is not only comparative but also stable. We also provide detailed investigations and visualizations of the proposed method to empirically demonstrate why it could generate good data samples.

In the past decades, many optimization methods have been devised and applied to job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) to find the optimal solution. Many methods assumed that the scheduling results were applied to static environments, but the whole environments in the real world are always dynamic. Moreover, many unexpected events such as machine breakdowns and material problems may be present to adversely affect the initial job scheduling. This work views JSSP as a sequential decision making problem and proposes to use deep reinforcement learning to cope with this problem. The combination of deep learning and reinforcement learning avoids handcraft features as used in traditional reinforcement learning, and it is expected that the combination will make the whole learning phase more efficient. Our proposed model comprises actor network and critic network, both including convolution layers and fully connected layer. Actor network agent learns how to behave in different situations, while critic network helps agent evaluate the value of statement then return to actor network. This work proposes a parallel training method, combining asynchronous update as well as deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), to train the model. The whole network is trained with parallel training on a multi-agent environment and different simple dispatching rules are considered as actions. We evaluate our proposed model on more than ten instances that are present in a famous benchmark problem library & x2013; OR library. The evaluation results indicate that our method is comparative in static JSSP benchmark problems, and achieves a good balance between makespan and execution time in dynamic environments. Scheduling score of our method is 91.12 & x0025; in static JSSP benchmark problems, and 80.78 & x0025; in dynamic environments.

Regression problems are present in many industrial applications, and many supervised learning algorithms have been devised over decades. However, available labeled examples are limited in some application settings; meanwhile, enormous unlabeled examples are relatively easy to collect. Thus, this work proposes a simple but effective method to cope with semi-supervised regression problems. We propose to use deep neural networks to develop our proposed method as deep learning has shown promising results in recent years. Our proposed method is a metric-based approach, and the goal is to learn an embedding space by metric learning with few labeled examples and enormous unlabeled examples. The regression estimation of the target data point is performed on the new space. We generate an artificial dataset based on several criteria to investigate whether the proposed model could make accurate predictions on the data samples that have specific properties. The experimental results point that our proposed model could capture the trend of a non-linear function and normally predict well even though this dataset comprises extreme outliers. Moreover, we conduct experiments on four datasets and compare our proposed work with several alternatives. The experimental results indicate that our proposed method achieves promising results. Besides performance evaluation, detailed analysis about our proposed method is also provided in this work.

The 12-lead Electrocardiography(ECG) is the gold standard in diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, but most previous studies focused on 1-lead or 2-lead ECG. This work uses a large data set, comprising 7,704 12-lead ECG samples, as the data source, and the goal is to develop a classification model for six common types of urgent arrhythmias. We consider the characteristics of multivariate time-series data to design a novel deep learning model, combining convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) to learn feature representations as well as the temporal relationship between the latent features. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model achieves promising results and outperforms the other alternatives. We also provide brief analysis about the proposed model.

Clustering with partial supervision background information or semi-supervised clustering, learning from a combination of both labeled and unlabeled data, has received a lot of attention over the last decade. The supervisory information is usually used as the constraints to bias clustering towards a good region of search space. This paper proposes a semi-supervised algorithm, called constrained non-negative matrix factorization (Constrained-NMF), with a few labeled examples as constraints to improve performance. The proposed algorithm is a matrix factorization algorithm, in which initialization of matrices is required at the beginning. Although the benefits of good initialization are well-known, randomized seeding of basis matrix and coefficient matrix is still the standard approach for many non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithms. This work devises an algorithm called entropy-based weighted semi-supervised fuzzy c-means (EWSS-FCM) algorithm to initialize the seeds. The experimental results indicate that the proposed Constrained-NMF can benefit from the initialization obtained from EWSS-FCM, which emphasizes the role of labeled examples and automatically weights them during the course of clustering. This work considers labeled examples in the objective functions to devise the two algorithms, in which the labeled information is propagated to unlabeled examples iteratively. We further analyze the proposed Constrained-NMF and give convergence justifications. The experiments are conducted on five real data sets, and experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm generally outperforms the other alternatives.

The imbalanced data problem occurs in many application domains and is considered to be a challenging problem in machine learning and data mining. Most resampling methods for synthetic data focus on minority class without considering the data distribution of major classes. In contrast to previous works, the proposed method considers both majority classes and minority classes to learn feature embeddings and utilizes appropriate loss functions to make feature embedding as discriminative as possible. The proposed method is a comprehensive framework and different deep learning feature extractors can be utilized for different domains. We conduct experiments utilizing seven numerical datasets and one image dataset based on multiclass classification tasks. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method provides accurate and stable results.

Early classification on multivariate time series is an important research topic in data mining with wide applications to various domains like medical diagnosis, motion detection and financial prediction, etc. Shapelet is probably one of the most commonly used approaches to tackle early classification problem, but one drawback of shaplet is its inefficiency. More importantly, the extracted shapelets may not be applicable to every test case at any time point. This work focuses on early classification of multivariate time series and proposes a novel framework named Multi-Domain Deep Neural Network (MDDNN), in which convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory (LSTM) are incorporated to learn feature representation and relationship embedding in the long sequences with long time lags. The proposed model can make predictions at any time point of a multivariate time series with the help of a truncation process. We conducted experiments on four real datasets and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the alternatives significantly on both of earliness and accuracy. Detailed analysis about the proposed model is also provided in this work. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that incorporates deep neural network methods (CNN and LSTM) and multi-domain approach to boost the problem of early classification on multivariate time series.
